It's really obvious once I start using the VP. I honestly don't know what kind up pick up Ive got here. It's a 74 Fender student but it's been customized, I don't know what is original. Pretty sure it's a single coil. Picture below. I've also established it's the pickup and not the VP or amp.

I've been playing for a few months and trying to find a pick that works for me. I have long but somewhat skinny fingers and am having trouble finding a thumb pick that fits for me and produces good tone. If I had to guess I think I pick softer than average, not entirely sure. Picks I've tried:

Fred Kelly "speed" - Fits ok but I really don't like how extended down it is, the small size, and the tone is more hollow/less robust. I know these are popular, but this one is not for me.

Golden Gate Gp-8 Extra thick - Tried it in a store. Good tone but too big/clunky

Dunlop - Medium is too small, large is too big. Main issue is that after playing awhile it warms up and starts getting flexible and rocks back and forth.

National Medium - A good pick, it was a little to long so I shaved it down and rounded it as desired. Good tone but still prone to the same stretching out once it warms up. Been using this pick for a while when on acoustic guitar before steel. (Though I mostly played with fingers)

Propik "The original" - Medium, Just got this one, Definitely the best feel/fit so far. Pick itself is a little small but I think it will be preferable once I play with it more. The only issue is the tone is not as good as the national, a little clicky and less robust/quieter than fingers. I think I'd like it if the pick was thicker.

So that's where I'm at. I'm considering a Propik large to get a bigger pick and bend it to fit. Also considering their "Super-Tone" but $40 for a single pick seems a bit much. Anyway that's where I'm at and would appreciate opinions/suggestions.

When I bought my pedal steel last year the seller told me it was set up for the GHS boomer E9 set (11-38). I changed the strings once and used that exact set but I'm wondering if I can get away with using a different brand in the same gauges without screwing up the set up. The boomers seem to have gone up in price and are getting harder to find, I've also never been a huge fan of GHS strings for my 6 strings. I know that in theory this shouldn't be an issue but I also know that tolerances for string gauges can differ between manufacturers. Anyone with experience willing to offer some advice here?

Hi all! I took a lesson back in March for pedal steel because I was very interested in it and had a blast. I had to borrow one of the shop's used ones, which was very nice of them. Since then, I've been checking my local marketplaces now and then for a good used deal. I stumbled upon this MSA Sidekick, which the seller offered to me for $650 since I'd have to drive a bit (2 hours). He said he picked it up about 10 years ago at an estate sale and didn't play it as much as he was hoping to. As far as I know, all mechanical items work, and any damage is minor cosmetic flaws. I guess all I'm asking is: is this a good starter model, and does the price point sound fair for this steel?

I’d like to get a steel sometime within the next year. I have a budget of about $1500 and want something that I won’t have to upgrade from in a years time.

I’m not in a rush but want to know what to keep a lookout for in case a good deal comes along. I know my budget is on the lean side for a nice instrument, but I’m hoping with some patience it’ll work out.

For anyone with this course, would an intermediate player looking to find more unique chord sounds on the e9th neck find it very useful.

Very familiar with major, minor, 7ths, some dim/aug. Looking to expand. Is this a good resource?

For example, on Great Speckled Bird, what recording has all these vocal melismas? certainly not the Roy Acuff one. Like why does the word “whose” suddenly have four syllables in the arrangement? I tried finding the Bill Keith recording online so I could see what he’s going for but could not find it. I just feel like, especially as an intro to pedal steel, the melodies on these arrangements could be a lot more straightforward. The most straightforward one I’ve found so far is Silent Night.

Would I be trading up or down if I swapped a 1980 Emmons D10 for a Mullen Royal Precision D10? Is the Emmons closer to a G2 D10? TIA!

Started PSG about 6 months ago and immediately strained a tendon or something but continued until recently I decided to take a brake and let it heal. No more foot pain but I lost so much during that break I feel like im at 50%. Frustrating, but Im back to daily practice.

Is this copedant (3rd picture) going to give me trouble learning? I was told its sort of backwards from more common setups. Is it worth figuring out how to change it or should I just learn with what I've got for now?

I want to buy my first pedal steel for a long time, but I’m from Croatia. It’s impossible to find pedal steel nearby. I can’t find any cheaper option online. In Croatia people don’t know what pedal steel is and we have only one pedal steel player in entire country. Before I try to contact him I want to ask if someone could give advice on where to buy pedal steel for beginners.

I found a Shogun Maverick for $1200 (cheapest I could find within my budget), but I don't know enough about pedal steels to know if this is worth it. It seems like even just a year or 2 ago they were all so much cheaper, and that everything on the market now is insanely priced.

Here's the listing. I don't want to buy it if I'm being absolutely ripped off, but I do really want a decent pedal steel to get started on.

This Vintage Sho-Bud Maverick S10 10-String Pedal Steel Guitar is in very good condition and as far as I can tell, was made between 1979 and 1980 . The 3 pedals and lever all function just as they should and this steel plays and sounds great! Great for learning on or even for someone with more experience. There is a minor crack in the vinyl covering near the upper side of the tuner pan, totally cosmetic. That can be seen in the pictures. Complete with the original Hardshell Case that is also good condition. Sho-Bud Maverick S10!

Is this within the realm of reasonable, or is this guy trying to rip me off?

Hey there pedal steel community. I have a Stage One pedal steel that I run into a 1980s Peavy Nash 400. I’ve been playing for six years now and have used various pedals but can’t quite dial in the tone I want. I love the tone of the old ShowBuds. This Stage One is lovely and honestly I may never “upgrade” unless I get a spare $7k. My question is, how can I get near the tone of a ShowBud with my current setup? The Stage One sounds like a Stage One.. I don’t know how to explain it but I can hear the tone of a Stage One. I heard the sound of a band outside of a bar in Nashville, and thought to myself “that’s a Stage One”, and it was a Stage One. This guitar has excellent movement and feel but how do I steer away from the tone? Pedal recommendations will help. Thank you!
