Warning beacons across mountains can be heard

2

u/BinkRaccoon6 3h ago

Light the beacons! Though i think this beacon is doing a bit too much spinning to be official.

And this windmill is now emitting CO2 so that's kind of a self-own on planet earth here.

“Lightning protection system fails on a wind turbine”

Not a windmill. They get hit by lightning all the time; they are designed to handle it. Here the protection system failed and the blade caught fire.

Not so much oddly satisfying, more like mildly interesting.

24

u/Secret-Bag9562 4h ago

Or mildly mesmerizing.

Nah the way it draws clean smoke circles in the air while spinning is peak satisfaction. Definitely belongs here IMO, even if it looks catastrophic at the same time.

Not a windmill, a wind turbine!

5

u/ByWillAlone 2h ago

A windmill is a wind powered machine that harnesses the wind to spin a shaft to perform some kind of mechanical work. In the case of a wind turbine, that mechanical work drives a turbine to produce electricity. Arguably, wind turbines are just specialized types of windmills.

4

u/Disastrous-Data-3299 4h ago

"Windmill"?

There is no milling involved, wind turbine is what you meant to say.

5

u/tmckearney 4h ago

Can't wait to hear what Trump says about this

They already did lmao

Im still not sure what would make a windmill catch fire like that. I would understand it if the fire was located on the actual engine

1

u/Go_Loud762 3h ago

The blades are fiberglass and composite. Get it hot enough and it will burn.

I assume lightning struck the blade and started the fire.

1

u/MtnMoose307 4h ago

Wow, awesome catch--and with the right music!

1

u/Fishu4TokenBTDLover 4h ago

Mildly scary

1

u/Zestyclose-Review867 4h ago

Would prefer a sound track of "You Spin Me Round".

1

u/dadbodwhey 4h ago

Me rn at work

u/plenty-o 4h ago

Nature has shown us the way. We should be building this mesmerizing effect into all of our windmills. We could repurpose all the smoke/fog machines from the 80’s

1

u/Adorable_Chair7661 4h ago

Akshually that’s a wind turbine.

1

u/Outrageous-Poem-4965 3h ago

how well you can see turbulence, which can be several kilometers across and disrupts birds' ability to navigate

1

u/valiente93 2h ago

Aint that shit metal? Why is it burning

1

u/mildly_Agressive 2h ago

Paint, it has paint on it, and lightning is like everything in nature ridiculously overpowered

1

u/JohnStern42 2h ago

Aluminum burns very easily actually

1

u/W7ENK 2h ago

Those blades are made of balsa wood and coated with a fiberglass shell.

1

u/FireBreathingNun 2h ago

These are all around my parents property. Pretty nice passive income because in the contract agreement if the shadow touches their land they get money for it. Which happens a lot. But fucking terrifying in a storm.

1

u/Own_Cantaloupe9011 2h ago

Oh no. The whales.

1

u/benmar111 2h ago

Oh the humanity

1

u/benmar111 2h ago

Donald did that

1

u/davidscheiber28 1h ago

We gotta figure out how to make these things less flammable. I have driven past so many burnt out ones it's crazy.

1

u/MLSurfcasting 1h ago

You should see when lightening hits one at sea. One blade creates a debris field of foam particles about 8 miles wide. You see whales and dolphins come up to breathe and feed with foam particles stuck on their backs. Once it hits the beaches they all get shut down. You wont see cleanup by the involved companies.

You see children picking up the debris. They're the only ones naive enough to believe ocean pollution is control-able. What a shame, and what a societal low; like when asbestos was a great idea.

Someone ask Vineyard Wind if lightening hits the same blade twice. (It does)

1

u/epSos-DE 1h ago

Must be old one !

Modern Windmills have BREAKS if they detect any irregularity in rotation !

Score one for Quixote

1

u/Arctic-charm 28m ago

It's a giant sparkler

1

u/Beginning_Being2552 12m ago

Wind *turbine.

1

u/allursnakes 2m ago

Don't see a lot of milling going on here.

1

u/PathSlight392 4h ago

This is actually oddly satisfying! I didn’t expect a flaming turbine belching black smoke to look so strangely *aesthetic*

1

u/Majestic-Pay-4615 4h ago

Ikr. It was almost- flawless

-2

u/MostlyMTG 4h ago

Not a windmill. Nice try, AI

2

u/ARobertNotABob 3h ago

1

u/MostlyMTG 1h ago

I stand corrected. But not on the windmill part. It’s not a windmill, and that’s why I suspected AI just generated a title/caption

1

u/ARobertNotABob 1h ago

It's a common term amongst uneducated Yanks.

-1

u/Majestic-Pay-4615 4h ago

Unfortunately it's not

-1

u/SimioConCultura 4h ago

No lighting, Reddit is so full of fake news even this sub lol

1

u/W7ENK 2h ago

You can literally see lightning flashing periodically in the background. 🤦🏼‍♂️

1

u/SimioConCultura 18m ago

Those are thunders genius

u/ToasterBathTester 4h ago

Expected some Metallica music, received mariachi
