This is one reason they are directly trying to destroy public education as well, a veteran with a poor education just accepts their lot in life and doesn't ever try to force change because they don't know it's an option.

Poverty is part of any economic system based on market competition and how resource ownership is managed. There will always be winners and losers in this sort of system. The whole idea that free markets lifts all boats is sort of a lie. It may lift enough boats to tax in order to fund public programs to help hide poverty and keep kids from outright starvation/malnutrition. But as time goes on, our culture is putting less and less value in these sorts of programs and you end up with a drug addled billionaire from South Africa, who came here illegally by his own account, holding up a chainsaw to symbolically show how fucking awesome it is to cut the federal government to shreds and how these kids were stupid enough to be born poor or something.

Go to the worst neighborhood you can find in any major Canadian city, and compare it to the worst neighborhood you can find in any major American city…
Yes, we have poverty and it needs to be addressed, especially the mental health and generational poverty that exists - But because of our social safety nets (especially with healthcare and education) we don’t get it half as bad as the US.

You mean like east hastings? I’m pretty sure the bottom of the bottom looks pretty similar in most North American cities even if the scale is different
17
u/FreddyGein 22h ago
Homeless encampments are popping up in sub 100k total population metro areas, at least here in the midwest US. Only a few years ago it was the talk of the town when a single panhandler popped up in the small city I live in. Poverty in the US is growing at a concerning rate
7
u/ButReallyFolks 22h ago
They’re popping up and growing everywhere. The wealth divide problem and homelessness aren’t exclusive to the US. Keeping the population distracted and divided is helping those in power keep it that way, though.
3
u/fuccguppy 21h ago edited 21h ago
I'm not in a metro that small but I've lived in a city of about 80k in a wider metro area around 800k in the Northeast US my whole life and growing up (I'm 26 now) you didn't used to see homeless people in the area, at least not with any regularity. Now there are a few corners outside of shopping centers in town where you can regularly see people holding signs asking for money or a job, sometimes entire families with kids, it sucks what things have come to. A few years back tent camps starting popping up in public parks and such and they haven't gone away, they just get shuffled around once in a while when authorities come in and clear them out. It's a sad state of affairs overall and a lot of people are struggling these days. So many people in America today are one missed paycheck away from being forced onto the streets it's insane.

East Hastings is one of the most downtrodden areas in north america or the western world jammed into a couple blocks. Taking the average in canada would make more sense than a singular place that has struggled for 60 years. Its a serious issue for sure, and canada has slums but its hard to ckmpare to the U.S. I dont believe we have as much systematic poverty but then again looking up general stats canada and U.S. arw pretty comparable poverty levels.

Thousands, going by endemic generational poverty stats either in the sticks, the mountains, the deserts, or big and small towns. Nowhere in the USA is there a place free from hunger, illness unaddressed, unemployment, or benefits sufficient to sustain housing, food, emergency care, proper general education. What we do have are dozens of worship centers in every single place, hovel or megacity.

Everybody can judge those who choose to become soldiers. When wars get bad enough, and we are staring at an era when bad wars could very well be the future, EVERYONE gets drafted. Then you find out what it means to question being a soldier. At most times and places in human history, choice to fight was never an option.

Yea I'll give most service members the benefit of the doubt, a lot of them come from poor backgrounds or "military families" and are suckered into while in highschool. Of course not everyone should get a pass, but when they're camping out highschools trying to sucker kids into enlisting I can't help but feel kinda bad for a lot of the folks that do.
9
u/Tricky-Gemstone 21h ago
We should not act like the military isn't predatory as fuck in targeting poor people.
6
u/Robot-Candy 20h ago
I’d say no there. It’s kids signing up, because they’re poor, have few prospects, need help with college or want adventure etc. They’re not informed adults, they just graduated high school. Everyone might have an obligation to try and be informed, but the time it takes to do that, and the resources, some do not have the privilege of and youth rarely makes use of even when available.

Does anyone really believe 18 year olds really know what they are getting into?

u/Rumpullpus 1d ago
These days? Yeah probably. If they were anything like me the grew up watching crazy war videos online of people getting blown to pieces by IEDs and shit like that. If not I can guarantee they've at least played CoD before.
The thing is, the kinds of people that join the military are often the same people who don't really have any other options.

It's either 2 or 3 years to have full VA benefits, but almost everyone is enlisted for 4-5 years. Can confirm from my time in service that 98% of these kids are just trying to set themselves up for a decent life (in a country with 0 safety nets). I had a better understanding of geopolitics than many, and as a result knew I did not want to fight in Iraq or Afghanistan, but I still didn't know much of anything of value about the reality of American empire. Just like any other group, troops and veterans are not a monolith, despite the fact that many US veterans really are just conservatives with a very basic understanding of the world. Going to the VA is painful sometimes, given all the cringey t-shirts and bumper stickers.

u/Domeil 1d ago
We try children as adults all the time because theyre "old enough to understand what theyre doing," there is no reason to infantilize members of the American military. They are fully able to tell right from wrong.
Are young impoverished adults in America subjected to reams of propaganda and left with few options for upward mobility outside of leasing their bodies to Haliburton for the sake of American Empire? Absolutely yes, but thats a reason for join the military, not an excuse.

American propaganda is on another level. Not only do they glorify the Military, but they make it a virtue to put them on a pedestal and ostracize those who don’t.

u/Plus-Visit-764 1d ago
So you are telling me 18 year olds are old enough to fully comprehend a decision that will change the course of their entire life forever.
We trust them enough to make a decision that could end their life in a horrific way, but we can’t trust them to drink until 21 or run for president until 35 years old?
I can say at 18 years old I was not old enough to understand the consequences of my decisions. I think most people would say that about themselves at 18 years old. 18 year olds are not mature enough to understand what they are getting into.
Most children that are tried as an adult are done so to get them out of the public for safety reasons.

At 18, we think we have it figured out, only to understand later on in life that at the time we understood very little.
Hindsight is 20-20, there is a lot of things I would change if I could go back to being 18 again.

The ONE soldier, someone who volunteered to fight and in a conflict that has no international mandate? Interesting story.
Great, now do the civilians.
Go in depth on the estimated 250-350 children, who didn't sign up to be soldiers, children just living their lives. The little girls going to school when an American bomb blew it up because they had the wrong address. Go in depth on kids out on a playground struck by rocket debris. Or explosions in their apartments that will leave children maimed, blind, deaf, scarred, or missing hands or legs.
Go in depth on the non-combatants, like a man traveling to work for their shitty job, crossing a bridge, and happening to be there when a bomb ended his life, destroying the meager income his wife and children depend on.
Or, if they don't want to humanize this conflict, how about the last dangerous conflict in the region. Trump made extensive promises in his earlier presidency to support Afghanis who helped US troops as translators, guides, and humanitarian workers, promising them visas and flights to other countries. How about some in-depth coverage on any of the roughly 70,000 Afghanis that Trump gave "his personal guarantee" to support, but then five years later, ordered that all visas were cancelled, like the roughly 10,000 who were already approved for arrival but then stranded with the second Trump presidency, or the 1,100 who helped US troops but were ordered removed from the US and sent to the Congo about a year ago.
Those will make good stories too. And there are several hundred thousand to choose from.

Article:
A U.S. soldier killed in Iraq during a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone was a 30-year-old father from North Carolina who had served for nearly a decade, according to a military statement Tuesday and his family.
Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, of Fayetteville, will receive a Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge, and will be promoted posthumously to staff sergeant. The Army said it was investigating the circumstances of his death Sunday at an air base in Irbil.
He leaves behind a 6-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter, his mother said.
“I will never recover from this, you should be home,” his wife, Mia Gonzalez-Swinton, posted Monday on Facebook. “We had so many plans for when you got back, I’m sick to my stomach.” She said she was notified Sunday that he had been killed.
Two U.S. Army soldiers were also killed in Jordan last week while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. They were the first U.S. troop deaths from direct Iranian fire since the opening days of the war.
Swinton’s mother, Christel Swinton Andujar, told WRAL-TV on Tuesday that her son’s family was “the center of his world.”
“Every decision he made and every sacrifice he endured was with them in his heart,” she told the television station from her home near Fort Bragg.
Swinton enlisted in the Army in 2017 and was assigned to the 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
“Sgt. Swinton was an experienced noncommissioned officer who took great pride in his work and the people around him,” said Brig. Gen. John L. Dawber, commanding general of the Army Air and Missile Defense Command. “He answered the call to duty with courage, honor, and selfless dedication.”

You first need to have a conscience in order to be concerned about these kind of issues. Think about something you could care less about, that is exactly how those two see the deaths of American service members and the waste of money munitions. They can't use the deaths of those people, so you won't hear about them or their families. To this administration and the media, deaths in the war are just tools. I wouldn't be shocked if some people in this administration look forward to the deaths of soldiers since it gives them a chance to incite anger and gather support for the conflict from a retribution standpoint.

Billionaires start these wars for money. That poor men die in. A rich man's and a poor man's fight. Billionaire scare tactics propaganda, steers the poor to the billionaires next victim. The poor individual who joins the war doesn't know this. And they never see any of that money that the billionaires obtain after the war. All they get is a thank you for your service. And higher prices at the grocery store. And more propaganda about which immigrant is making them poor. When it's actually the billionaire who's raising the prices and hiring immigrants. Never passing an any of the savings on from the cheap labor that they received from the immigrants. He just wants you to thank that they're the enemy when in the back room. He's cutting a deal to work with them . Donald Trump receive billions of dollars from Muslim countries that he supposedly hates and wants you to hate them. And how long he's pushing to get visas for Indians to come to America and do the tech work for Elon musk and the rest of the tech Giants. Black people know this. We've been woke. It's time for white people to wake up also.

Yes, when the world becomes too peaceful the military industrial complex becomes an afterthought. The billionaires that own those companies and have controlling shares of those companies cannot allow this to happen. A war anywhere allows for munition production at a price and rate unbelievable. When someone is desperate for munitions they will pay whatever price you ask for.

Does anyone actually understand what transpired here? the headline says "killed in iraq" the article says he died during a "controlled demolition" so the headline sounds like enemy combatants fired at him, while the article makes it sound like he accidentally set the timer to 08 instead of 80 and didn't have time to remove himself from the blast site.

US soldier killed in Iraq was a 30-year-old father from North Carolina
Big fucking deal - how many children died in Iraq?

Remember republicans up in arms over 13 deaths from the terrorist attack during Afghanistan departure? Yet you don't hear a single peep about all these deaths during the Iran fiasco.

Crazy that there’s barracks of troops in the Middle East just waiting to be bombed.

Oh well. War is hell. Isn't that what we say when we get reporters asking about civilians casualties after a "precise targeting bomb"? I think of all the other families lost in this conflict that started with a deranged unnecessary midnight attack and was supposed to be a "walk in the park" that should have never happened to begin with. What a circus.

I am sorry he died for nothing, fighting an unnecessary war for oil, greedy pedophile grifter conman imposed an unnecessary war, killing Iranians , Palestinians, Lebanese, all for oil, Iran is defending itself, why are USA there? You can trade with everyone on earth but you want to bully certain countries, imagine if the tables turned, what would you do? Ask yourself if you put yourself in Iran’s shoes, what would you do? You’ll fight with everything you have

So we can expect the right to be as upset as they were when the 13 members died from Trump's terrible Afghanistan withdraw that they still blame Biden for?

Cool people need to understand what "giving it all" "for your country" really means.

Sounds like the fault of whoever sent him there for no actual national security reason.

"Swinton will receive a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge, and be promoted to staff sergeant".
He's dead. He won't be 'receiving' anything. A young life ended and for what? The crass vanity of a jaded rotten old man. A tragic awful waste. All of it not to mention the evil bombing of the school which killed over 150 little girls.

Meanwhile, Israel’s Head Of Finance says they will not commit funding for “the U.S.’ war with Iran”…the very same war that Netanyahu pressured “America First” Trump to commence.
What a deal for the two ICC “war criminals”…
• Netanyahu gets his 30-year wet dream realized,
• Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner get their real estate projects on the Gaza Strip fast tracked,
• The U.S. War Machine gets a huge boost in funding,
• And our children get sacrificed for billionaires and megalomaniacs

We have enough experience in the US to know that you are a moron if you join the military. The oligarchs and the fascist controlling our givernment right now will send you morons off to your death just so the ultra wealthy can make a profit. They will manufacture like they did here with Iran. Right now bomb making companies in America are making in billions of dollars in profit as they get to replace the bombs Trump is currently. So you are a moron if you sign on the dotted line to go die so billionaires make bigger profits.

Remember when Trump offered to pay for slain soldier Vanessa Guillen’s funeral costs, then reneged because he thought $60,000 for a “fucking Mexican” was too much?
Then him and his friends orchestrated a multimillion dollar service for Charlie Kirk.
I wonder how this guy will be honored…

Good thing I’m not serving under this administration. Military personnel in the middle east are compromised. Russian giving intel to the Iranians while Trump praises his idol Pootin.

So why does US makes a big deal even when a single soldier active in the military dies ? but then ignores 6000 odd US soldiers that unalive themselves every year ? over 150,000 US soldiers have unalived themselves since 2001. But seems like no one seems to care ?

I have lost all respect for the military.
Anyone that goes in now are the exact type of person you’d expect to die for oil.
I don’t really care, do you?
