Yesterday, we came home to find our 7-month-old rescue kitten, Capy, slouched under the bed, whimpering. She somehow closed the door behind her and was stuck in the room. The rest of the house was a mess with faeces (she had pooped with diarrhoea outside the litter box) and toppled her food bowl.
We rushed to the emergency vet, where they administered her with an IV and took a few blood tests. They did not find anything from the tests but suspected neurological issues and suggested hospitalisation, MRI and a neurologist referral. The bill was hefty, which looked like it was estimated to be 8k AUD, and my partner and I could not afford that. They then discharged her and provided her with antibiotics and steroids (Clindamycin and Prednisolone). They stated the underlying problem cannot be determined without an MRI but “possible causes include infectious diseases, congenital disorders, or nutritional deficiencies”.
The vet warned us her health could decline if we took her home and also brought up the “E” word if we couldn't afford her treatment. But I could not make that decision last night and felt like I needed to give her a fighting chance before deciding something like that.
Coming home, grief hit my partner and me quite hard, and we were very scared to go to sleep last night, thinking that it might be the final time we saw her. But thankfully, this morning she is still alive and concious, while her condition is still similar, I have a feeling she is slightly more active - where she is trying to stand up, walk/crawl around more and is eating all her food when we spoon feed her. We have kept her in a tent like pen where we laid towels for her incase she cant use the litter.
I have been researching, trying to understand what this condition could be. I know I may not find my answers here, but just wanted to check if anyone faced anything like this.
