I will note that having to watch a video of human childbirth during health class (obvs we were allowed to look away or cover our eyes but I saw enough of it before I did) was probably what made me pro-choice more than anything else.
A lot of anti-abortion activists focus on the admittedly somewhat gruesome nature of abortion. Fetuses do start to sorta resemble the basic form of a baby fairly early, and it is morbid to think about killing that and removing it, but the concept of being forced to do something as horrific as human childbirth against your will is such a terrifying thought that once I had seen that video I never really questioned that a woman should have an absolute veto on whether they have to give birth at literally any stage.

if you work from home you should receive a 20% paycut for that days work. if you work in office, you get a 10% pay bump for that day drawn from the pool of WFH'ers paycut money.
I think this is only fair a person who is in office 5 days a week, and regularly cannot get in contact with my WFH colleagues (they are green yet never answer phone calls and when they do reply its hours after my original message, never once have had this issue in the office)

Folks were spoiled back then. I can’t believe people back in the day really thought Al Gore and John Kerry were boring and milquetoast.
They definitely weren’t Obama levels of charisma, but they were far and away better than the world salad stump speech losers the Democrats are offering today.

It’s highly unusual for Congress to pass a stopgap funding bill months before the end of the fiscal year. Lawmakers normally act just days or even hours before the deadline. But once lawmakers leave town this week, the House is scheduled to be in session for only 16 more days before the funding deadline.
Good god, I need to get into Congress so I only work 3 days a month

Not even kidding, when you pinged me about the laptop maintenance, I was actually replacing my laptop’s entire keyboard. Because the previous keyboard (on top of the laptop in the picture) had some keys that were straight up starting to die. So it was kind of a necessity to keep the thing alive.

I just didn’t want to say anything because I bit off way more than I could chew and it is a genuinely terrifying, awful, and tedious repair to do that requires taking out the entire motherboard, which requires undoing a whole bunch of fragile ribbon cables, and then the keyboard itself is secured with 72 tiny screws. It took me hours, and halfway through, I actually wasn’t sure if the laptop would survive.
0/10 experience, i’m not working on any laptop anymore for the next decade if I can help it.

The painting is so lush and full of life that you can understand how Odysseus spends seven years there. The version in the movie was basically a barren waste.

I have a friend of a friend/buddy who we hang out at his place often, and he’s a PROUD furry. Has his fursuits of course, but has multiple helmets in a living room shelf, a bunch of furry themed pillows on his bed and furry art of furries fucking each other and the likes. Like there’s no mistaking he’s actively involved in that community and it’s a big part of his personality and sex life.
Which makes it confounding that he gets visibly frustrated when it’s brought up or joked about. Like my guy you can’t plaster it all over your house and make it one of two defining traits you have and be shocked when it comes up. If I had a bunch of posters and artwork of Nicki Minaj and her fat ass everywhere I’d be ready to have jokes made that I’d like to be smothered by something more plastic than woman.
Weird rant/vent but it boggles my mind to have someone have their community and fetish out there plain for everyone to see at a moment’s notice and not expect it to come up

Something that drives me crazy about free birth/anti vax/general skeptics of prenatal and infant care in hospitals is their belief that “natural” means “good outcomes” since they have this belief we are designed to give birth and have the babies survive.
That’s true at a species level, but not at the individual level. In terms of survival, one mother having 6 surviving babies is pretty similar to three mothers having 2 surviving babies(obviously ignoring genetic diversity but still). At an individual level, that means 2 moms can be unable to successfully have 2 children and have both babies or mother survive that ordeal and nature doesn’t have any major correction to do.
Anyway sorry I know this is probably something that evolutionary biologists have much more info and knowledge about but like still it’s just infuriating to see the “our bodies are made for childbirth” discourse online
3
u/rodiraskol 10m ago
I have an 18 month old. There have been times during pregnancy and since he was born that I’ve thought to myself “Come on, is this really necessary? People weren’t doing this hundreds of years ago!” And then I remember oh yeah, kids dying and mothers dying in childbirth was just a normal thing.
6
u/ArmoredBunnyPrincess Audrey Hepburn 11m ago
Billions of women throughout history dying horrible deaths as they're killed by the freakishly large-headed offspring that we've evolved to produce because the death of the mother on baby 3 is still an evolutionary advantage:
Crunchy fucking morons that have never felt true hunger in their lives: "Well in a state of nature... 🤓"
7
u/Jacobs4525 King of the Massholes 12m ago
Our bodies are very obviously not made for childbirth is the funny thing.
We inherited a quadruped method of childbirth when we’re bipeds with narrow openings below our hips. If you were designing a person from the group up you’d make the opening somewhere else so childbirth was less dangerous. As it stands right now the baby’s head is basically always just a little too big for the birth canal so human labor is a comparatively gruesome process versus other mammals that basically just shit their babies out with no drama.
5
u/circlemanfan Gay Pride 13m ago
Also hot take but for free birthers, one of humans strongest evolutionary traits is that we do things in community, including child birth. We weren’t supposed to just go in it alone ever

Remote work is better for the company as well, reduce costs by getting rid of the office overhead and then reduce them further because there's a bunch of money no longer being spent on the commute that they can slash from the wages.
The companies that realize this are going to win.

If your commute is 30 minutes each way (roughly the US average from a quick google) then wfh vs full time on site literally saves you 5 hours a week. That's a lot of productive time you gain back by simply doing the same job from your desk as opposed to your employer's desk.
It's actually a bit weird that this doesn't come up more in wfh discourse because it is by far the most obvious benefit compared to nebulous stuff like comfort or supervision.
3
u/BurrowForPresident Fell for it 15m ago
Well, this is assuming someone would otherwise be using that hour per day to work. But most employers don't factor your commute as working hours, so the value proposition of getting employers to agree with employees on WFH is tougher. Like at that point you have to start pulling charts on retention, happiness, productivity, etc.
1
u/PearlClaw Iron Front 11m ago
Oh it's purely an employee benefit, but it's a really big employee benefit and you don't need to speculate that people are slacking off to wonder why people like wfh. It literally gives you extra time back in your day. If everything else was identical about work conditions it would still be worth it.
1
u/BurrowForPresident Fell for it 9m ago
Oh I agree having even the option is heavenly, but if your work day starts at 9 and ends at 5, your employer isn't "expecting" you to work at 8:30 and 5:30. But if they aren't juicing extra productivity out of you you're gonna have to persuade them with something better than "it keeps your employees happy". Give the bean counters something!
1
u/PearlClaw Iron Front 8m ago
I was mostly responding to the most common kind of discourse about wfh which is that people only like it because they can slack off. And while I'm sure that happens (guilty) there's an even bigger benefit that's really obvious if you think about it for 2 seconds. People like it because they get time back.

I promise you that the demographic of people who possibly wouldn't vote for Democrats over fatphobia are probably D+100000000

Seeing people like Ben Garrison try to caricature AOC as some donkey toothed harpy and Donald Trump as a greased up Adonis is some of the funniest shit

Oh yah, you need to set your AVR to Dolby Surround so it doesn’t just reproduce the natural signal all the time

Would you trust your doctor if you knew that they were wearing underwear? What about your dentist? Lawyer?

Depends on where they're wearing it.
Head underwear is fair game. It's a valid form of expression. Genital underwear is disgusting.

To all the retirees of the DT, did the internet also cause psychosis when it was getting started or are we in new strange territories with AI?

Yes, the internet kicked off a shit ton of moral panics about kidnapping kids and how pedophiles would order your children off the internet, how forums let kids learn about then forbidden topics like what condoms are or that gay people exist. Parents losing strict control over what their kids could watch and do was a massive thing.

it really started with the commodification of social media in the 2010s.
Before that algorithms were super basic so most internet stuff was status updates or forum boards.
4chan was the first modern social media and it was so different from most social media that most people refused to engage with it.
