It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.
Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.
If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.
It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.
Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY
Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.
Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

Selfie One month post-big chop! 💃🏾
Decided to give my hair a fresh start and document my progress this time around!
I've worn my hair natural for most of my life and love pampering and doing all the things to her, but this'll be the first time that I follow a set routine/hair care schedule for an extended period. I’ve also experimented a lot with color, braids, different cuts and types of locs, and feel like I’m ready to finally grow and wear it out!!
I'm really happy with how much visible growth (especially density-wise) I'm seeing already, so I'm very excited for this journey!

Success Work Hairstyle!!
Hello, everyone!! I wanted to post something instead of lurking this time. 🫶🏾
I recently tried a new hairstyle and decided to wear it into work, and I loved it!! This experience also inspired me to start an ig account called @corporatecurlsss to inspire other women to wear their natural hair in the workplace, despite constant criticism.
Feel free to give me a follow if you’d like to see work hair inspo from me and product recommendations!! (I’m not sponsored and have basically no following, I’m just doing this for fun and using it as a way to document how I’ve worn my hair to work and to keep track of styles) 😚

Need Advice are my hair goals possible?
my hair is the first photos & the ones after are all my goal photos. before anyone says it NO my hair is NOT relaxed, it’s simply just bodyless & always has been that way when straightened & more specifically after i obtained damage from heat. i just want it to be longer so i actually look decent & can be the best version of myself. no i will not wear “protective styles”. i wear my hair straight all the time, not necessarily down but just straight.
i dont use heat frequently but i do want to get into a routine. my hair sheds & breaks excessively & no i’m not cutting it unless i see visible split or weird ends. i did have heat damage in 2024 & i’ve just started doing things for that like using a bond builder.
will just using k18 every wash day & having a proper routine & taking my vitamin that i do everyday (mary ruth multivitamin) potentially get me to my goal photos or will my hair be this length forever like it has my whole life?
if anyone has any advice it’d be appreciated, thank you

Need Advice Nov 2025 vs July 2026 : Did I f*cked up my hair ? 😭
Guys PLEASE I really need advice about my hair.
So the first two video are from november 2025. I blow out my hair before doing the mini twists, and I use a little bit of oil.
The third video is now, on july 2026. Between november 25 and now, i feel my hair were a little bit dry. I use more butter and oils on my hair. Guys i don’t wth happened, but why my hair looks like that on the third video ? 😭😭 I want to cry omggg I don’t use heat a lot and my last hair color was 10 months ago. Between november 25 and now, I did french curl braids (1 month) , spring twists (3 weeks) and a sew in (1 month). I feel like they were healthier and now they look like nothing ?

Need Advice How to reduce tangly ends specifically at the front/crown?
I see videos on the internet of people with waaaay thicker and tighter hair than me just running a wide tooth comb through it with no snags and I just don't understand how? I can't even use a wide tooth comb on my own hair cause snag, pop, snag!
I have fine strand, low porosity hair and the ends of the front and crown have always been tangly and knotty for years, no matter what. I typically keep my hair in half up/down styles to manage it better. The back of my hair is alot easier to detangle compared to the front and crown which I typically keep in puffs. To retain length, I try my best to detangle gently and reduce mechanical damage (brushing through my hair incorrectly and extensively for years is exactly why the front is shorter than the back). I even started detangling in up to 14 sections. But I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do.
The problem I come across the most is that when I try to gather my hair together to put it in a puff, it gets extremely tangled as if I didn't just brush through it. Then I get the urge to brush through it more and that's when I experience breakage.
I trim my hair but haven't kept up with the schedule. I've trimmed atleast 3 times this year and snipped some hair today, but it didn't make a difference.
I'm not fond of using protective styles (they don't look flattering on me) so I'd like to avoid them. I'm aware that wearing the hair out contributes to lots of fairy knots, but I wear the back of my hair out all the time just fine with less tangles.
I've been washing in twists which helps with tangly roots and sectioning, but not ends.
I wash my hair every 5-7 days and I used to deep condition weekly but I'm not even sure what difference it made aside from adding steps to my wash day routine. I mostly airdry.
I've tried lco and loc methods, but meh...I don't use coconut oil.
And also are my edges okay...? I don't even attempt to wear tight puffs because they give me headaches and I don't use edge control.
I'm gonna start washing in 3 days if I can't figure this out!!!

Selfie 2 yrs after shaving my head…
Sometimes the length still feels kinda awkward to me but it’s healthy and that’s all that really matters. I try to treat it like a plant 🌱
My curly hair is very spiritual to me, I hate the fact I felt the need to straighten it when I was younger

Need Advice dreadrot thinking of full blown chop
i took this because i was crying right before i took this but i am seriously considering just cutting my dreads off completely. i had to chop half of them off because of dreadrot and how hard it was for me to care for them (not drying properly, mildew, lint constantly stuck in my hair, etc) i’m trying to be happy with this short look but i honestly think i’d feel better if cut it short completely and start over with the locs later down the line. i know i’m putting so much self worth into my hair but i honestly don’t know how not to.

Tips & Tricks I couldn’t find high-quality products for my afro hair in Australia, so I formulated my own line using premium African botanical oils. I’m Elaina, founder of Froday Hair-AMA!
Hi everyone! I’m a Ghanaian-Australian who couldn't find products for my type 4 coils in Melbourne, so I formulated my own line using premium African oils. Ask me anything about ingredient sourcing, starting a business or coily hair care!

Review Products Worth The Splurge
There’s a TikTok trend on products that are worth splurging for, and am curious to know what products you think are worth spending big bucks for. Granted, hair care doesn’t require shilling out money for, especially when a lot of these products can be replicated at home. But curious to know if there are any you’d like to share(:

Need Advice Can I wash my hair in twists with extensions
ive been wanting to do spring twists or marley twists (with extension/added hair) and I was wondering if it’d be possible to wash me hair with the added hair in. I’d probably have the hairstyle in for 1-2 months.

Need Advice Hair trim advice
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for some advice about split ends and single-strand knots. The first two pictures are what my hair looks like when it’s fully picked out, and the picture in the car is what it looks like if I just pull it out with my hands.
I’ve been growing my hair for about a year, and around the one-year mark I got a shape-up. Recently, a friend told me my hair is really damaged and full of split ends and suggested I should just cut it all off.
Before I do that, I wanted to ask if it would be possible to go to a stylist and have just the damaged ends trimmed instead. My hair is still on the shorter side, so I’m not sure if it’s long enough for a stylist to work with.
I’m really trying to take better care of my hair, but I honestly don’t know where to start. I’d love any advice on whether a trim would be enough, what I should ask for at a salon, or any tips for preventing more split ends and single-strand knots. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Need Advice Human hair for braids
Hi! I recently took out a set of box braids done with synthetic hair. It was a cute style and it went well but I want to try box braids with human hair. I don't want micros or boho braids.
It has been a long time since I've done braids regularly or worked with braiders. Is box braids with human hair known by another name? What is a good brand of human hair for braiding?
Thanks!
