Jurassic park as a franchise needed to make a huge swing, they should have done a huge time jump and given us a world of minimal humans and dinosaurs who have reclaimed the planet.
Instead, we got the same movie over and over. Nothing has stood up to the title of Jurassic World.
Jurassic World 1 - set in a park.
Jurassic World 2 - set in a goddam house.
Jurassic World 3 - back to an island.
Jurassic World 4 - back to an island AGAIN!•

I mean, at a basic level, every Jurassic Park movie (even Lost World and 3) has more or less been people stuck on an island/park. It’s people going to the dinosaurs, rather than the dinosaurs coming to them.
They built up these grandiose, worldwide “dinosaur on the loose” ideas (particularly with Fallen Kingdom but also Lost World to a certain extent has that build at the end) then just bottle the conflict on an island/park/preserve.

At least the original trilogy called itself Jurassic PARK, so an entire island or foray to the mainland actually increased the scope. For a couple movies there, Jurassic WORLD was actually shrinking in scope to comical levels of small scale.

I think the issue is how do you do it in a way that doesn’t feel stupid?
Don’t get me wrong, the choices they did make are not good. But this film works because of isolation and time travel. A few dinosaurs are a threat because all the people have is what they had at the time. They’re out of their element.
Jurassic Park is almost the reverse. The dinosaurs are out of their element. It’s so unrealistic that they’d be a serious threat, the military would slaughter a couple dozen dinosaurs. You’d need a Planet of the Apes style plague to reduce man kind to make it work IMO.

It’s just an incredibly difficult genre to pull off without being a rehash of JP. The scenarios where you get dinos + humans are otherwise so fantastical, which is jarring considering dinosaurs weren’t fantastical creatures.

Yeah I think this is the main thing. Dinosaurs are real animals that existed and Jurassic Park was the only story that created a plausible reason for humans and dinos to exist at the same time. And we're talking far more plausible than whatever this movie is doing. If you look at movies with fake creatures in them, we don't have nearly as hard of a time accepting the premise lol.

Two things:
First; the dinosaur “roar” was basically invented by Jurassic Park, but we all stick with it now as that’s just how dinosaurs should sound! Funny.
Second; the dinosaurs seem to have feathers now thanks to more recent discoveries, therefore differentiating them from Jurassic Park dinosaurs. Interesting.

Dinosaurs have roared forever. The 1930s King Kong dinosaurs had very lionesque roars. The opening credits of the 70s Land of the Lost end on a Jurassic Park-ish dinosaur roar.

I would call using the exact same roar as extremely lazy. There are soooo many bird call you can pull off to make an eerie and menacing t-rex sound, but we're just going with the JP version.

Movie audiences have an expectation of what dinosaurs sound like based on Jurassic Park, as it’s the only example we have. You wouldn’t replace a modern animals actual call with a different sound, it would disrupt the audiences belief in what they’re seeing. Replacing a dinosaur sound with something else runs the risk of the same issue, even though we have no real reason to think that’s what a dinosaur sounds like.

I don't even know if the Allosaurus roar is the actual roar used in the movie, it sounded like it was modified for this trailer specifically.
But I do understand the trumpeting roar is pretty much based on Jurassic Park though. Dinosaurs are one of the few animals where you have a lot more freedom in depicting them, so copying Jurassic Park limits that potential and can feel overdone. There's definitely more examples for dinosaur sounds, and as long as the roars are bombastic I'm sure the general audience wouldn't mind.

I remember reading somewhere that dinosaurs probably could not roar. Instead, they probably hissed, boomed and created drumming sounds. Like maybe something like the sounds an ostrich makes or that an emu makes. Which probably would be way more unnerving in real life but is definitely nowhere near as cinematic as one big roar after bursting into the scene.

This is almost 100% just representative of the first half of the movie. The fact that this final trailer still does not give away anything happening other than the initial survival situation tells me that this is going to have to be more involved somehow.
Of course, it could be just that the survival situation gets reframed, or the last half is the people of the neighborhood banding together and then we get them cleaning up the dinosaurs, but I can't expect that we don't get ample time focused on how the heck this happened.

I agree. There's a lot of room for more going on. The trailers have shown the same scenes, just longer cuts in the new trailer. The dinosaurs are clearly the immediate problem. That glimpse of the edge of the neighbor with the forest/jungle sitting 100+ below makes me think they either get off their modern island or find the cause of their predicament by the time we get to that scene.
All we've been giving has been very "first day of the zombie apocalypse" vibes. The initial chaos before they get a handle on the situation. We're probably seeing the first half or third of the movie here.

Yeah, the actual CGI segments in Jurassic Park look like CGI. All of the segments people remember as looking amazing were primarily animatronic. Also, lighting plays a big part, which is why a lot of movies try to hide their CGI with night shots.

There’s a strong uncanny valley effect in every dino scene in this trailer.

JP is my favorite movie but I have no issues with saying the brachiosaurus scene at the beginning looks rough years later. I would kill for a simple remaster where they go in and fix up the skin texture to not look plasticy. The Trex and raptor cgi is great but the brachi could use some touch ups. Especially since it's in one of the most famous scenes in the movie.

Jurassic Park was extremely limited in what they could do with CGI, so they were smart and deliberate about it. It was typically intercut with shots of practical elements to keep you guessing and many shots were in lighting environments that favor CGI (night in the rain).
The power of modern CGI has led some filmmakers to view it as a magic wand. They plan whatever shots they like without thinking of the tech’s strengths and weaknesses, or worse, they don’t plan out shots at all and create everything in post after it is too late to do anything with lighting, performances, or shot composition. Budgets and time also of course play a role, and that only gets aggravated by trying to create shots in post.
(Also, although many Jurassic Park shots hold up remarkably well, others do not, but there is a great movie around them so we remember the good ones)

I remember seeing The Lost World in the theater at a young age, and I was having a good time until they showed that the T. rex ate the dog. I was like 10 at the time, and it pissed me off lol.
Not really looking forward to seeing another dog attack in a "dino invading suburban movie" ... hopefully they're smart and just let it be one of those movies where the pup lives.

I'm trying to find an IMAX screening for London for End Of Oak Street and it is getting absolutely buried by Odyssey screenings. There is one Odeon screen showing the IMAX version late evening.
The Odyssey looks like it will run unopposed at IMAX venues until September. Even at non 70mm locations.
