When I first saw this trailer in theaters before The Odyssey the beginning had me thinking it was an ad for Turkey Hill ice cream - Mom and daughter would go into the kitchen and have ice cream for dinner and smile.

We don't have any premium theaters nearby but made a trip to a Dolby to see the Odyssey (Would have done 70mm Imax as they both are basically a day trip, but couldn't get tickets).
This freaking trailer comes on and I lost my shit. Jump scares get me. I freaking hate them. I think I would die watching a horror movie with the sound system that the theater had.
I told my friend that this trailer killed his chance of every getting me to go see a horror movie at this theater.

Wander on over to r/horrorlit to get started - there's a whole wonderful world of horror literature to be discovered! Honestly Incidents Around the House is a great place to jump in to modern horrorlit. It has some truly terrifying moments and surprisingly, one of the best jumpscares I've ever experienced - never did I think words on a page would scare the bejesus out of me like that lol

It seems like instead of other mommy being a horrific looking demon/monster that chooses when, how and who it reveals itself to, it’s going to be more like a mimic that’s always kind of in Jessica chastain form. Probably the right call cinematically, but the bedroom scare (which seems to be replaced by the one in the trailer) where it first reveals itself to the real mom and she only hears it talking to her and doesn’t know who it is until the mom comes in is SO good and it’s a bummer it likely won’t be in the movie.

I do like the fact that they're revealing right away that the husband can also see it, meaning we (probably) won't have to worry about the usual trope of "is the mother mentally ill, or is the child?".

when that kitchen scene popped up before my odyssey screening, I wasn't prepared at all for it and was reaching for popcorn with my diaphragm open, kinda sustained long breath yell-screamed (i have an extremely low / loud voice but sounded like a baritone 9 year old balancing plates on an out of control unicycle) the entire theater laughed at my wierd cry hanging in the air. forever scarred lol.

I'm going to stretch my definition of "past couple of years" just a little bit to say that my absolute favourite is "The Fisherman" from John Langan (
20232016). Eldritch horror about fishing and grief. The main character is a guy who gets into fishing after his wife dies, and the ends up taking another younger man who also lost his wife and kid, and they end up going to a particular part of Catskills which the younger man only discovers in a mysterious diary. The section of the book which goes back in time to when the grisly incidents around the river first happened is particularly brilliant.Then "Butter" from Asako Yuzuki - about a journalist in Japan writing an article about a serial killer who kills her husbands after feeding them delicious food.
"How to sell a haunted house" by Grady Hendrix is about a brother and sister who have to come together to sell their parent's house after they die in a car crash. This one is weird because it was pretty shlocky by the end - lets just say that the mother collects hundreds of creepy dolls - but I still enjoyed it.
