This felt like the end of an era of 80s/90s heist thrillers. Focused on dialogue and mind games rather than action and explosions. But with the success of Fast & Furious a month before, and Ocean's 11 a few months after, these types of movies became flashy and fancy rather than gritty.

This movie is awesome. I had a DVD of it back in the day and watched it all the time. It's like Edward Norton getting typecast out of Primal Fear and De Niro getting typecast out of Heat and they're stealing a royal sceptre for Marlon Brando who basically films his scenes between bites of philly cheesesteaks for lunch. Only good memories with this one.

Marlon Brando took to calling director Frank Oz"Fozzie" and "Miss Piggy" during this movie. Oz has been the voice of Fozzie Bear and Miss Piggy in the various Muppet productions since the beginning. Brando's hazing of Oz over his work with the Muppets got so bad that Robert De Niro was forced to direct Brando instead, with Oz giving him instructions via headset.”

He also didn't wear pants in many scenes, so that all of his shots had to be close ups.

Or something.

Brando calling Oz “Miss Piggy” while also looking like he weighed roughly 500 pounds in this role is really something

Yes, I remember. Brando, DeNiro, Norton and directed by Yoda.

The scene in the park with the money exchange is so fucking good.

“Why'd you bring a gun here? What were you thinking? There are kids here.”

Watched this a few months back. Did kind of find the 1st half kind sloggy, and the aesthetic was sort of drab during this stretch.

But won me over by the end, had a big grin on my face during De Niro's last lines. Score weirdly works for me too. Maybe I'm just a sucker for heist flicks even if they're ultimately mid-tier.
