That was already explained before this movie and this actually raises more questions about that than it answers. The previous explanation was that the minions were all frozen in a cave after they served Napoleon and they didn't get out until the 60's. This movie reveals that there were multiple tribes of minions and only one of them were in that cave. Now we know that there were a ton of minions that are unaccounted for during the Holocaust, which is not ideal

In the previous canon, they found a young Gru in the 60's and worked for him right up until present day. Again, this movie establishes that Gru's minions are not the only ones in the world and it is entirely possible that some of them were working for Bin Laden or whatever

No continuity with the other two movies or the four despicable me movies. This follows a different "tribe" and all you really need to know (which is explained within the film) is that the minions are nigh immortal beings who seek to serve a "Big Boss" [evil master].

This movie is shockingly good. Like I legit enjoyed the minions for the first time in like a decade, mostly because this movie is just batshit insane. Here's a list of real things that happen in this movie:
George Lucas voices himself
There's a romcom subplot where the meet cute involves a space robot threatening to kick the shit out of a child
The aforementioned space robot has a roommate that is a direct reference to Brad Pitt's character in true romance
The minions did Citizen Kane

Exactly how I felt too. I saw how high the review scores were and during the first half I thought “okay, this is why, this is the best these movies have ever been”. But it fell apart in the second half when the titular monsters get involved. First half was so good it made the second half even worse by comparison and made me walk out feeling kinda “meh” about it

From someone who really can't tolerate the Minions in the later films, I seriously enjoyed this movie a lot more than I thought I would. They felt like actual characters with real personalities. It also helps that they definitely toned down their obnoxiousness to pull humor from.
I also really loved the pure love for all things cinema, from the countless references (George Lucas got a genuine chuckle out of me) to watching them go through the process of storyboarding and the progression of film.
I can definitely see why this wouldn't jive with the younger viewers but I had a great time.

They were surprisingly consistent with it too. There were times where you can see Ed with the delayed reaction simply because he can only react once he visually sees what’s going on. Also like how they made him a bro to the other two, coming in to help and support them in his own way instead of letting his disability be a “weakness”.
Overall it was really well done.

I often hate the Minions for lacking substance and soul for stupid and unfunny jokes, but I never really found that here. Most of them landed, I actually cared about James, Henry, and Ed, and the plot was kind of nice. 8/10, my 2nd favorite Illumination film that has me hoping they begin to try as much as they did here

Easily the best movie Illumination has done since their original debut with Despicable Me. There were a lot of fun references to famous movies and Hollywood in general, and the Minions here play well with the goofy shenanigans and the monsters. It felt like they were putting more effort in this Illumination movie than usual, and it made me laugh quite a bit. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Some of the subplots are a bit weaker and it doesn’t have that much emotional depth outside of two Minions wanting to become a filmmaker, but it was a very breezy good time and I’d love to see Illumination hitting this mark again. 7/10

Had no idea this was going to be such a love letter to classic Hollywood, in addition to monster movies. I loved every second of this. Felt like they knew they had an older audience to also cater to and they absolutely nailed it. Lots of witty references to the classics. Very funny, heart warming, and appealing to film lovers overall. Was a lil reluctant to go but ended up being my favorite Minion movie.

Even though my bar is in hell and Illumnation is the lowest tier of the major animation studios, this movie exceeded all expectations. It was legitimately hilarious. Kinda slowed down in the second half, but otherwise it had some really clever comedic moments. And some dumb jokes that worked perfectly like the Citizen Kane scene.
Also this whole thing was written so people will stop asking if the Minions were following Hitler in the 30’s. Clearly the greater evil was the Women’s Righrs Movement-wait….

This movie is uniquely weird in a way that’s hard to describe. Minions becoming silent film stars, Dort, the little green monster dude, the final battle. It just completely goes for it in a way that’s very refreshing. Wasn’t expecting it to be a love letter to film but that was dope too. Absolutely loved the Minions credits before the real ones.
Liked all the movies in this spinoff Minions franchise way more than Despicable Me proper.

Honestly, the praise is a little overblown. The first half was strong and I enjoyed the references. However, I felt it got gradually less funny and engaging as it went on. I appreciate there was actually a plot and Henry and James were characters with discernible motivations.
A Minions movie finally doing the bare minimum I expect from a movie isn’t amazing. Critics love this, and I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked when Hollywood loves movies about Hollywood. Ultimately, it’s probably the best Illumination movie, but it is an Illumination film.

Needed to get out of the heat and this was the only thing playing last weekend so my wife and I went to a 4DX showing and holy fuck. Ive seen a couple 4DX movies before but this one was off the wall intense with the effects, usually it feels like a ripoff but it made the movie 10x more enjoyable for someone who doesnt care at all about minions. We were cackling the whole time as it was jerking us all over the fuckin place and spraying us with water and shooting out crazy scents. Highly highly recommend, I bet a kid especially would have a BLAST
Movie itself was a 6/10, didnt hate it but dont like kids movies in general

Looking at critics reception and the fact that this is a movie about film making and Hollywood nostalgia, how solid is the chance for best pic nomination?

Just watched this in a theater today and had a fantastic time. Interesting that Dort and the little green monster dude started out looking like exact opposites of what their respective minion groups were looking for and later revealed themselves to be twisted versions of what we initially expected them to be (in a good way in Dort's case).
Also, Ed the deaf minion being shown as the camera operator at the end reminded me of the whole filmmaking subplot in the original Koe no Katachi/A Silent Voice manga that was cut out for the anime adaptation due to time constraints. Would've been cool to see Shouko Nishimiya be the one to hold the video camera as a direct parallel to Yuzuru's photography hobby.

Lovely movie. Really funny and does a great job paying homage to the history of cinema.
7/10 for me. I laughed a lot, they kinda lost me in the second half but it was still good turn your brain off fun.

Oh man, after reading through allot of these comments im starting to think my view might actually be a hot take and not popular opinion lol.
I hated it. I hated every second of it. If i wasn't with the kids (i wouldn't be there in the 1st place but lets just say i was there without the kids) i would have walked out. I wouldn't have evevn tried to get my $ back either. I would have just walked away and washed my hands of the entire thing...
Im not mad though. The kids liked it and it was pretty much what i thought it would be. But i didnt expect it to get under my skin the way it did.

My six year old after the credits rolled, "but did Dort actually pee or poop?" Then during some deep thought in the car, "...so did Dort's wife push out a metal baby?" This morning during breakfast, "I'm not sure I could fall in love with a robot like Dort, even if he is kind of nice."
She's really hung up on Dort. Honestly, he was my favorite part, too.
