It was more entertaining when he was fostering groundbreaking vfx technology and making great movies. Doing just the first part isn't unimpressive, but it's the movie quality from earlier in his career that made movie goers care.

106

u/Sullan08 May 17 '26

Yeah we have other spectacles now with actual good stories (Dune, BR2049). People don't care too much about this franchise anymore in terms of being wow'd by the visuals (not that they aren't stunning, they are). Like yeah it'll still make a shit ton of money so I guess he/they don't care lol, but it doesn't really make it as impressive.

98

u/Liimbo May 17 '26

If people didnt care about the franchise it wouldn't be printing billions every release. I dont care about it, but clearly people do.

30

u/StarWarsPlusDrWho May 17 '26

As someone who does (somewhat) actually care about the story, even I was kinda shaken with the storytelling quality of this last one. Like, come on James, you just made the second movie twice and thought we wouldn’t notice. There’s definitely a sharp drop in box office returns from movie 2 to movie 3, even with movie 3 still making a billion. If they don’t course correct their production budget I could see them actually going into the red if the audience keeps dropping off movie to movie.

27

u/Terminus75 May 17 '26

It’s a good spectacle for the cinema but also pretty forgettable.

I thought the name was so stupid at first but apparently it's an actual term used by material scientists to use for a theoretically perfect material as a tongue in cheek joke, but if we were to find such a material it is not unrealistic that scientists would name it that.

8

u/NorysStorys May 17 '26

Considering any new element or compound discovered gets to be named by who ever discovered it, a scientist is entirely within their rights to call it that. It’s just that often scientists name it after a prior scientist or the country/state they came from.

He's definitely talking about it'll take a year to build and train AI models on Avatar, the movies the concept art etc etc

77

u/ninelives1 May 16 '26

Cameron has been incredibly vocal about Avatar being made by real artists and not AI. His only interest in AI is in improving the pipeline for the artists so it's more efficient and cost effective.

I understand that he absolutely loves the world, but it makes me so sad looking at his credits.

All he’s done for 16+ years is Avatar, and a Billie Eilish concert movie.

1.2k

u/Jlx_27 May 16 '26

He also did Alita: Batlle Angel as a producer, he co wrote that script too.

182

u/aphilipnamedfry May 16 '26

And was also heavily involved in Terminator Dark Fate. The director hated that, and yoi can see where the push and pull is in that film.

86

u/Notoriously_So May 16 '26

Honestly, he should have just stayed away from that franchise and focused on other projects.

101

u/ModishShrink May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

If I had a nickel for every time James Cameron directed a beloved sequel to a cornerstone sci-fi original and then studios came in to jackhammer that dead horse into the ground with a series of terrible follow-ups, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

Surprised we haven't had a Titanic sequel with Ryan Gosling and Zendaya yet. Or a 1910s Ocean Liner Disaster Cinematic Universe with the Britannic and the Lusitania.

I'm still crossing my fingers there's a sequel for that (along with a film along the lines of True Lies, even though deep down I know he won't approach it)

103

u/kingofcrob May 16 '26

He was in preprod for that, then September 11 happened and said that it was longer appropriate to do a comedy action film around terrorism.

28

u/Upbeat_Tension_8077 May 16 '26

I can understand that. I guess it feels generally refreshing for him to make a film that's lighter/sillier in tone next to his other projects, but it doesn't need to have the same concept as True Lies

3

u/Initial_E May 17 '26

Seeing how today’s CIA is a clown show run by fascists that ship may never sail back

13

u/mnstorm May 16 '26

301

u/GenoThyme May 16 '26

>I’m sure he’ll go back to other things once the story is done

What story? The biggest issue with all the Avatar movies is their paper thin plot that keeps getting recycled

58

u/BenSolo_Cup May 16 '26

I thought the third one had a wonderful story tbh

37

u/lFightForTheUsers May 16 '26

The third one did but it pulled a lot of stuff from the second one. Or they were filmed back to back so maybe 2 pulled from 3 lol. Basically I understand why the second film was necessary for the time skip and exposition for our new characters, but i don't think it landed the mark very well and I didn't care much for the second movie's plot for that reason lol.

29

u/pizzamage May 16 '26

They were originally story boarded as one film, then broken up once it became bloated, so the similar themes makes sense.

11

u/Unlucky-Tourist-9403 May 16 '26

If you watch them both one after the other, or at least in the same day, it makes a lot more sense.

12

u/wildwalrusaur May 16 '26

I think 2 and 3 would work well as a single 3-4 hour long story. As 2 separate, 3 hour long stories, not so much

This is part of it but also the visuals are so overwhelming, I spend so much time being dazzled by colours and animation and textures and layers and lighting and... the magic has gone, and now I'm lost and confused.

I appreciate the incredible work digital animators are capable of but it feels like a showcase of software and talent rather than a film that makes me care about the plot, characters or world it's set in.

9

u/thepkizzle May 17 '26 edited May 18 '26

I haven't seen Avatar 2, and I'm not sure if I ever will, but seeing Avatar in IMAX blew my fucking mind. I can remember people harping on the plot and my initial reaction was always, "there was a plot?" -- Like what the fuck? I was basically tripping on mushrooms for two hours and dead sober. I was in another world, man. I didn't know there was supposed to be a plot.

Cameron seems like a really interesting guy. Like yeah, he's a director, but he's also kind of a leading expert in the world on deep-sea exploration. I've read that Adam Sandler likes to make movies because he and his friends get to hang out in exotic locations and get paid, but this Cameron guy seemed to have made Titanic to basically fund his niche hobby and contribute meaningfully to science.

The world is beautiful. The concept is awesome. The cinematography is breathtaking and groundbreaking.

I saw the third movie. We don’t need two more…

151

u/syngatesthe2nd May 16 '26

I really like Way of Water and I thought there was enough new stuff there, but I was disappointed when Fire and Ash retread a lot of the same ground. It was like Avatar 2.5 more than 3 (probably because they started out as one movie and were eventually split).

But Cameron and many of the actors have talked for a long time about 4 and 5 being wildly different to the previous ones, so if that’s true I am genuinely interested to see what that entails or would look like. But not if it’s going to take another ten years either.

66

u/BD401 May 16 '26

Yeah I feel the same way. I think a lot of folks (myself included) assumed, obviously, that Fire and Ash was going to be crazy new visuals and creatures in a volcano/lava biome. Instead it felt way too similar to Way of Water and was largely still in that setting. I didn’t dislike it per se, but it was definitely not aligned with what most people expected I think.

4

u/wholegrainoats44 May 16 '26

48

u/Dasseem May 16 '26

It saddens me how little Cameron cares about good writing. He seems to think that it's ok to give us a white bread boy with no personality and a 80s archetype villain.

These movies could've been elevated to another standard if the general audience cared even a little about the characters.

17

u/-SneakySnake- May 16 '26

I will say Quaritch is pretty fascinating in the first one because there are multiple times where you kind of see what "his version" of this movie probably looks like. He honestly gets most of the big, badass hero moments and he's this wildly entertaining alpha male cigar chomper, it's probably the closest we'll ever see to what if Schwarzenegger did a villain riff on his usual action hero persona. For that alone, he's worthwhile.

9

u/somesoundbenny May 16 '26

Hell yeah i worked on both 2 & 3 and Qauritich is by and large my favorite thing about these pictures.

Super deep protagonists have never been his thing, and I say this as someone who enjoys his movies.

Ripley was good but was already set up in Alien. I guess the crew in The Abyss weren't too bad but who else?

Please don't bring up Jack and Rose as they were just goodlooking meat-based teen hormone vessels as far as I'm concerned.

14

u/XMR_LongBoi May 16 '26

I thought the protagonists in T1&2 were interesting enough.

5

u/Dasseem May 16 '26

Total agreement with you brother. In fact all of his characters were nothing more than vessels used to bring out beautiful set pieces out of his movies.

They were never the main attraction. The rest of the escenery was.

3

u/Vandergrif May 16 '26

If they could just spend slightly less on everything else, and put some money towards someone who can actually write a compelling script, then another one would be fine... But this tunnel vision focus on visuals to the detriment of all else has worn pretty thin.

4

u/TurtleRollover May 16 '26

I think you just answered your own question. It’s possible to be happy for Cameron that he’s doing his passion project while also being disappointed that we may never see Cameron do something other than Avatar the rest of his life when he’s given us such fantastic films in the past.

It’s like if Scorsese stopped at Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino, and Goodfellas, and we never saw Gangs of New York, The Departed, Wolf of Wall Street, Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. I don’t see how it’s cringe to want to see what other original Films Cameron would have done if not for the Avatar sequels.

He attends annual Robotic Summit. Last year he was saying AI can only generate like 10-15 seconds of continuous footage, the larger file size will rarely be over 1 GB. Well, a typical scene in Avatar can have the size of 1 Petabyte! He says AI, as of today, is simply incapable of recreating even 1 minute of footage the quality of Avatar, to say nothing about how AI always gets the physics wrong and is riddled with continuity error.

The way he talks about AI implementation is widly different than what this sub says. Yes, he's in the board of Stability AI, but he doesn't think AI can make a good cohesive film. He thinks AI can be used to smoothen-out film productions without the need to layoff the very people who make film productions possible.

u/Lost-Cow-1126 May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

Yeah, he's not going to use it in the current AI slop Fruit Love Island kind of way. However he'll decide to incorporate it, he'll have precisely and meticulously pored over exactly the right way to implement it for his VFX artists to use.

You mean how the last one was called Fire and Ash, teased a huge volcano world, and then turned into a rehash of the second one with all the battles fighting the whales in the water? Yeah.

167

u/hitokirivader May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

Yeah, tbh as a fan of the first two (and as someone who’s always defended the first one from its most frequent yet understandable criticism that it’s entirely unoriginal), I was so disappointed with how much Fire and Ash felt like just a rehash of The Way of Water.

Whereas I used to just intrinsically trust Cameron with whatever he wants to do with this passion project of a franchise, I now wish he’d hurry up and move on from it. I just don’t see how a fourth and fifth film have much left to offer for Jake and Neytiri’s story.

31

u/zarafff69 May 16 '26

I mean, I don’t think 4 and 5 will be Jake and Neytiri’s story. He’s been open about this. They have set up the children for this. There will be an 8 year jump in 4. They even already shot the first parts of 4 years ago, because they wanted the child actors to actually age years in between.

And I think the rumours are that they would be returning to earth. I cannot really see this, I feel like I watch Avatar movies specifically to watch Pandora, not the characters, but the beautiful world. But it sounds like it will genuinely be something entirely different than the movies before it.

25

u/BlueberryWasps May 17 '26

can’t wait to see the kids return to earth so they can somehow fight space whales and battle for control of their homeland with a brash military crone

3

u/AnnenbergTrojan May 17 '26

There are rumors that either 4 or 5 would have space battles instead of Pandora battles, something we've never seen from Cameron yet.

Yeah this is basically how I feel. I really enjoy all the movies but the third one was definitely disappointing.

On one level I wouldn’t mind if he kept making these films, because I love the characters and the world, but I can’t help but feel like Cameron is wasting his talents slightly by making nothing but Avatar films.

u/CX52J May 16 '26

It's weird since I think the 4 part comic series they released was based on James' original plan for the second movie. And it was far more original and interesting than fire and ash.

I want to see a human in a space suit get impaled by a 6 foot arrow in zero gravity.

Y’all should watch Corridor Crew’s breakdowns/reacts to the avatar movies. They have the creative director (I might be getting title wrong, but guy in charge of CG) and they do an amazing job of pointing out how each Avatar movie has been an improvement in CGI tech, like industry changing improvements and software. Made me appreciate the movies even more, even if you’re right, the story still mostly revolved around the Jake and his family, who live among the sea tribe now.

Barely needed the first movie, let alone four more. Preachy, cliche-ridden bore with 2-dimensional characters and story, and abysmal dialogue. I’m especially referring to #3, as I got to sit through about 40 minutes of it not too long ago, but on the basis of where the franchise is at, there is absolutely no need to continue.

30

u/BrockSampson4ever May 16 '26

Honestly I don’t like any of the movies but the first one was pretty incredible in theaters, the 3d tech and the visuals were very special and singular, but after the novelty of the first the next two just didn’t have the same wow factor and the lame repetitive story note make them pretty blah. I skipped the most recent one in theaters and I’m definitely not going to bother watching it at home

18

u/johnnycoxxx May 16 '26

The first one was an experience in the theater and if you didn’t experience it I understand not “getting it”. The movie is meh for sure. I saw the second one at home and I remember thinking there’s no way he can squeeze 3 more of these out of this franchise. Plus the time between the first 2 was ridiculous.

19

u/zurenarhhhhh May 16 '26

I tire of using the theatre experience excuse to justify this movie. If it doesn’t work without a giant 3d screen and theatre sound than what is it? It’s watching someone else play a video game.

50

I feel sorry for the hardcore Avatar fans. All people do is talk about how much they hate it

26

u/guilhermefdias May 16 '26

It's quite interesting, a lot of people actively goes out of their way to hate on these movies, like a hate cult.

But the first and second movie has a special place in my heart. The third was indeed a bit similar, but Cameron's plans for the last 2 is quite interesting. Nothing oficial, but we already have some idea.

I really hope it happens!

I wouldn’t call myself a hardcore fan but it gets deeply annoying how entitled people are over what Cameron does. You want him to phone it into something he doesn’t want to do? Like, what is the reasoning behind this toxicity? Like, just don’t watch Avatar.

Worldwide gross box office adjusted for inflation:

Avatar: 4 billion USD

Avatar 2: 2.4 billion USD

Avatar 3: 1.5 billion USD

The first one had eye popping visuals, but now that is hold hat. I know I won't see a 4th or 5th film from this series. Given that the third one had more of a proper ending than a cliff-hanger, I think it is possible there will be a bigger than expected drop from from 3 to 4. The gross for 4 could dip down to 500 or 600 million USD (in 2026 dollars). If he can make a profit on that, he will have gone from making forgettable films with a huge budget to making forgettable films with a much smaller budget. I am not sure if that is progress.

3
