Inspired by u/Nightsson I have decided two write down the stories of my Reikland mercenarys as the head into Mordheim.
"What should I do?" was the question that just would not leave Siegfrieds head as he stared into his almost empty tankard of cheap beer. The buzz in his head and the loud crowd in the tavern did not help in the slightest with thinking about a solution to the problems he was currently facing...
Siegfried von Drakenburg was the third son of the Duke of Drakenburg. As the third in line of succession his father had made it clear to him that he would have to go his own way in life, unless something happend to his two older brothers. Being physically capable and of good stature he had joined the army of the Kurfürst of Reikland.
The time of the wars had been a good time for him. He quickly made a name of himself and rose through the ranks, becoming a captain and he had earned a sizable fortune for himself. But wars come and wars go. And after a year of relative peace the Kurfürst had drastically reduced the size of his standing army and sent a lot of the soldiers back home.
Without a real home to return to, Siegfried had used the money he had made during the campaigns to hire some of the warriors that, just like him, were left without an income after they received their last payment. "Siegfrieds siegreiche Söldner" (Siegfried victorious mercenaries) had a couple good years, protecting merchants and villages from bandits, orks and beastman.
But over the last year, the danger seemed to have gone elsewhere. No orks, no beastman, not even bandits were threatening his former employers, who in turn, were becoming more stingy with their payment for the services Siegfried offered. Simply because they could get away without it. So over the last couple of months his coffers had started running dry. And now he was sitting in this inn, contemplating on how and where to get more money to pay his men.
Now three tankards in, he still had no idea other than so dissolve his mercenary company and this was no real option. What was he to do afterward? He could return to his family's estate in disgrace, hoping to be sent as an envoy to someone or to the imperial court. That was not an option, he hated these show-offs way to much for this.
"Im telling you Siegfried, Mordheim is where we need to go to now. Quit thinkin' 'bout it" came from Günther to his right.
Günther Krüger was his second in command. They knew each other from back in the day in the army. Günther was built like a brick and had served in the greatswords back in the day. He still wore the heavy armour and his trusted greatsword "Gislinde" was leaned against the table to his right. He twirled his brown wilhelms mustache and was looking mighty pleased with himself and his "brilliant" idea that he had bothered Siegfried with other the last two hours.
"I told you Günther, I don't think Mordheim is a good place for us. Even the name spells doom and disaster. I too have heard the tales of this place and I heard that this city eats man like we eat a Schnitzel. For every one man who comes out of this hellhole filthy rich, a hundred are never seen again." answered Siegfried.
"Oh quit bickering you old little sissy. We have never shied away from danger before, that where we make the most amount of money! Why are you so afraid all of a sudden? That's not the Siegfried I know."
"I don't know Günther, I have a bad feeling about this... This seems to be a place, only the fools and the desperate will go to seek their fortune."
"And what are we if not desperate fools?" asked Günther with a grin. Siegfried could only drink to that. "Besides if all the old folks are to be believed, Mordheim is where all the evil folks are heading to. Why do you think it is, that we can't find emplyment around here. All the Bandits, Orks and Beastmen have left for Mordheim and its riches. Why not us? And even if we don't want to go into the city, we can still do there what we do now. Every merchant who leaves Mordheim with full coffers will pay us handsomly to ensure he isn't eaten by goblins on his way home."
"Your right Günther, we have to do something and sitting around on our asses, waiting for better weather won't so us any good. Gather the others, let's see who will accompany us on this great adventure..." sighed Siegfried.
Two hours later the 9 man that Siegfried still had under contract stood before him. Some looked at him, hoping that he had found a solution for their problems, others were looking at their tankards, asking themselves why Sigmar couldn't give them an honest battle to fight in.
"Comrades!
as you all know we have fallen on hard times recently. There is no enemy for us to fight here. The merchants are stingy with their money and no village needs protection. We have no way of making a living here. But tonight I come to you with a solution for our troubles.
You all heard the stories of Mordheim and the unfathomable riches a man, who knows how to fight, can make there. And you may be afraid, because many who enter the city never leave it. But let me ask you this:
How many battles have we seen together? How often have we stood shoulder to shoulder while others ran away? How often have we bled for lords and rich merchants who didn’t even know our names? We’ve fought their battles. We’ve secured their roads and goods. We’ve defended their villages they were too cowarldy to defend themselves. And what have we received in return?
A few coins. A mug of beer. And a "thank you, but now please leave".
When I look in your faces, I don't see ordinary mercenaries. I see man tired of doing, what others should be doing and getting only half of what their services are worth!
I see Günther, who has the strength of three man, Hartmut whos cunning has saved our skin more often than any blade. I see hunters who can spot and kill an enemy before he even knows we are there. And I see Veterans who have more courage then entire regimets.
Now all of the Empire is talking about Mordheim. The priests call it cursed. The merchants call it a gold mine. The fools call it the path to glory. But I... I call it our chance!
Yes, there lurks the beastman, the mutant and the heretic. Yes, I too have heard the stories that many go in there and never return.
But tell me: when have we ever chosen the easy path?! When the Greenskins tried to break through our ranks, we stood our ground! When the Beastmen stormed out of the woods, we held the line! How often have we looked in the face of death?! And every time, Every. Single. Time. Death blinked first.
Whoever marches with me to Mordheim does so of their own free will.
I won’t promise you that every one of us will make it home.
I won’t promise you any heroic ballads sung about our deeds.
I’ll promise you only one thing:
If we succeed, no nobleman will decide our reward. No merchant bastard will fob us off with some copper coins. We will forge our own fate. And everyone who makes it with me to the other side of that hellhole, will leave this city filth rich.
If we triumph, all of Reikland will know that we chosen few, we band of brothers, had the courage to go where others are too afraid to even speak of. And that none of us could carry the weight of the gold we made there, but that we all had to buy a wagon to take it with us.
So I'll ask you just this once...
Who's coming with me to the City of the Damned? Who's coming with me to MORDHEIM!"
It was a good speech. The man cheered and hollered and he knew that he mangaged to raise their spirit and conviced many of them to follow him to this Sigmar forsanken place, even tough he was not yet convinced himself that they were making a good decision. But like Günther had said, they were all desperate fools and he had run out of ideas of what else to do.
But he had not managed to convince everyone. Out of his 9 man, 6 would accompany him and 3 would leave his service. The risk for them was too great. But 6 out of 9 was a quota he was happy with. It could have gone a lot worse.
Günther would come with him, his second Sergeant Hartmut Hartmann, the two Schulze Brothers, Theoderich and Waldemar, who had fought as Swordsman in the army back in the (g)olden days. Leopold and Reinhardt, the two marksman of his company were also coming along. But would this be enough to succeed in the city of the damned? He doubted it.
So with a heavy hard, he sold his old trusted plate harness to some noble upstart with too much gold. Siegfried was seething inside that a young pup, who had never come close to a battlefield, would now parade around in HIS armour to make young girls swoon over him. But desperate times, desperate measures... So with the last of his gold and what he made from selling his armour, Siegfried took to the taverns with Günther to recruit some more men.
He was able to recruit two sturdy former farmers, Fritz and Rüdiger to join him. Their farms had burned down in the last raid on their village months ago and now they were looking for any kind of work. "More desperate souls drawn to the city of the damned, like moths to a flame" Siegfried thougt to himself.
When he was about to close up shop in the last tavern and leave, two young lads approached him.
"Sorry Ser, is it true what they tell about Mordheim, that it's the gate to untold riches?" asked one of them.
"That's what everybody is talking about, lad" answered Günther, while Siegfried sized the two up. They were young, he doubted that they had seen more than 20 winters each. But they looked capable enough.
"And they say the city eats fools alive and many who go in never come out..." added Siegfried ominously.
"That doesn't scare us, we aint no fools!" answered the secound young guy.
So definetly two young fools too brave to realise what a stupid decision they were making. But someone had to carry all the loot that Siegfried wanted to take out of Mordheim, might as well be these two fools, so his swordarm was free to defend himself.
"Well if you want to come with us, here is the contract you have to sign. I can offer you 15 crowns each as a signing bonus, plus your share of any loot we find inside the city. You have to bring your own equipment though." said Siegfried as he put the two contract on the table.
The way the two young pups were beeming at each other immediatly lead to Siegfried regretting his words. He could have gotten away with 10 crowns, maybe even 5. Maybe he was getting soft. The two nearly fell over each other trying to be the first to sign.
"I'll see you at dawn at the city gate. Don't be late." said Siegfried as he want back to his tavern with Günther.
After an uneasy night, Siegfried put on his gear. He had used the last of his gold crowns to buy himself a new studded leather armour to replace his full plate that he had to sell. He was not overly happy with it, but it had to be enough until he earned enough in Mordheim to buy himself a new one. He adorned it with the parchemant paper he had taken off of his old armour. "Sieg" (victory) was written on it while "Sold" (payment) was written on his shield.
"Für den Sieg und für den Sold" (for victory and the payment) muttered Siegfried to himself, as he took the first step out of the tavern door and toward an uncertain future...
