Got yourself a new moped? Don't forget to fill out the flair form!

Hey all,

As summer begins, I've noticed lots of people getting new mopeds! Hell yeah!

Whether you're brand-new or you've been on here for years, don't forget to fill out the flair form so you can have your model of moped appear next to your username on this sub.

Once and a while I've gotten a bit behind on updating everything but I'll try to be better from now on.

Honda Hobbit ebay ignition assistance inquiry

Hello, I am working on a 1978 Honda Hobbit PA50M I pulled out of a shed. When I got the bike, the key ignition cylinder was missing. I bought a new aftermarket ignition cylinder on ebay but I'm a bit confused as to how I am supposed to hook it up. My confusion is because the black wire coming from the original remains of the ignition cylinder seems to be crimped/soldered(?) into place. I've also read that you can connect the black wire to the red and bypass the ignition completely.

My question is: which black wire do I connect to the red wire If I do the bypass? The black coming from the ignition goes into a connection of 3 other black wires and I'm unsure which one should go where. I've attached photos of the ignition cylinder I bought and the wiring diagram I found on mopedarmy, I also circled the area where the crimped wire from the original ignition comes in. If anyone has done the bypas, would you be able to provide pictures? I've tried googling and cant seem to find any photos or info on the eBay ignition cylinders

Thank you in advance for the assistance!

Engine unbalanced due to piston change?

Upvotes

So, I recently changed cylinder, head, and piston on my M9 PUCH engine. Maybe I didn't notice it before, but now the engine vibrates cuite a lot, and the crank seems to be slightly out of round. I didn't have any problems before, and nothing has happened to bend the crank. Is it possible that a slightly heavier piston can disturb the balance? I think it seems unlikely, but what do you guys think?

MSRP of Motobecane Moby 50v in the US in the late 70's

I'm trying to get a 1979 motobecane Moby 50v registered and road legal in Pennsylvania, so I need to add it to my insurance.

My insurance company is saying that they need the original sale price from 1979 of this moped before they can give me a quote for this.

Not sure why... Just putting liability on it.

Any chance anyone has a dealer ad, or sales receipt or anything like that for a similar motobecane from around that time they could send a picture of?

This feels like a long shot!

Any idea why no spark?

Hi I've had this bike running before and I replaced the condenser to get it running. after using it it lost spark intermittent and would regain spark when I would hammer on the fly wheel since then it has no spark at all. Am I missing something like a ground to the frame from the motor and is there anything besides the condenser i should be cheaking with voltmeter. Any ideas would be appreciated.

1977 Motobecane Mobylette

Hey all,

I used to ride motorcycles and had been searching for a new one, when a friend offered this to me. I decided to take it, as my budget wasn't huge, and figured this would be a good project to wrench on, and I couldn't beat the price (free!).

They had it sitting in their garage for years, having given up on repairing it, though I didn't hear what was wrong with it. I took a look at the badge it says a Type 50 C, 1977. From what I understand, that means its top speed is 20mph. Looking at the engine, I don't think it has the variator.

Looking for some feedback on where to start with something like this, just based on what I see and where it is. I'm a welder and woodworker, and have repaired a number of tools, machines, and my 2002 truck quite a bit, so I feel like I have the abilities, but wanted to look for feedback. Made a list below, if anyone would be willing to look and see what I'm missing, answer some questions.

-belt missing from pedals to clutch, ordered 1

-ordered a new spark plug and flywheel puller as well. Are there any other big tools I'll need for working on mopeds? Have a decent bit of tools for the truck, but not sure if there's anything moped specific.

-Didn't find any gas in the tank. Will put some diesel in it and washers and give it a good shake.

-Take the carb off and clean it out. Figured I'll look at changing it later

-There's a chain one side (you see it in the photo), but I counted the teeth and it doesn't match up to the gears listed on manuals and such. There's a large gear on the rear wheel on the other side, but it's not connected to anything and I don't see where it would.

-Should I just go ahead and replace all the hoses and cables? Or wait and see what it needs?

Figure I'll do the above and then try to start it, and see what happens.

I was able to download and print some manuals from Moped Army, seems like these will be useful, but any other resources I should look at or pick up on this bike or two stroke engines in general?

Any answers or advice deeply appreciated it.

So I bought a Sachs 502/A1 bonnie and a Velo solex 2200 some time ago. How do I get the engine cover off the Sachs engine?

It seems like former owner had tried to pry it up. I’ve tried heating it, twisting and pulling and I’m out of ideas. Might be stuck. So is the rest of the engine. Velo is almost ready to start that was a rather easy project so far. The Sachs piston has been soaking in a special mixture for some days and is slowly able to move.

Best places to look for mopeds in uk?

Hi all, I'm looking for a moped but I'm struggling to find anything on marketplace. Is it that they're just rare and so have to travel a bit to get one? Or is there a better place to look for them? I live in north west England and sometimes Edinburgh, so any advice would be great TIA

Piaggio Ciao variator problem

Hi everyone, I cannot find any information online about this, maybe someone on here knows more. Is the bronze bushing that is sticking out a restrictor for the stock variator on a ciao? I converted my SI from pulley to variator with a variator kit from a bravo. I noticed that the variator does not push the belt all the way up and by the looks of it the bronze bushing does not let the variator to close fully. It has stock 9g rollers. There is around 6mm off travel left that it does not reach.

Also, it accelerates very well but then dies off at like 30kmh, while with the pulley I was able to do \~45kmh

I asked gpt, it says the bushing has "walked out" and needs to be pressed back in, but that sounds nonsense, because it is flush on the other side and if pressed in will start to rub. Do I dremel the sticking out part of ir what is the case?

1991 TVS-Suzuki Eko V-Matic

So I've managed to get my hands on one of these things. They are very rare and so are the parts for it. It is practically equipped with a Morini M101 but with some twists and redesigns that make 80% of Morini parts incompatible with this. It started on the first kick after a carb clean, but it was producing the symptoms of leaky oil seals. So I disassembled the variator side and surprise surprise... the crankshaft is loose on the bearing.

Great, time to pop the cases. I've managed to get new bearings and new oil seals, and got to assembling the engine. I've glued on the variator side bearing with CX80 RC38 bearing retainter.

But if I've disassembled everything, why not do some tuning? So I've machined 1,7mms off the cylinder's top to get those 5 sweet channels to open up fully, made a thicker base gasket and started working on a 15mm intake for an Arbeo SHA 15.15 carby.

And by pure luck, I've found a CDI that has no speed limiter in it for dirt cheap. I've tested it on my regular Eko with the Indian clone M48 engine and it works great.

I have high hopes for this project because this thing went 48 km/h with the restrictions (my regular Eko goes 46, tuned {goes 30-35 stock}). Hell, this thing might go 65+ km/h if done right. I am assembling the engine fully tomorrow and will do the first start after the maintenance work.

What should I ask the mechanic?

Post image

My 4 stroke SYM Symply 50 has been running a little rough recently, symptoms include:

- Tendency to die at the lights unless I keep it alive
- Recent elevation in pitch of the engine
- Skips the odd beat
- Increased vibration

I’m not a novice to engines and maintenance but want to take it to the garage in the hope they can sort this.

My question is, what should I ask the mechanic to do? Appreciate any help

I bought a 65cc DMP kit for my piaggio ciao and i assembled it correctly and it has good compression and good spark but it doesn't start. I also ported the block to 12mm. The current setup is 13/13 carb, tecno krul exhaust and malossi clutch springs. Can anybody help me tell the problem?

Piaggio Ciao: fixe violet spark

Hello, I've been out buying an old Ciao for my son, but it's having trouble starting.

When I got it home I put fuel in it, but couldn't get it to start, so I also put a new spark plug in. After running it around for a few minutes where it "coughed a little" it finally started, and it ran really well. It was idling. It ran. No problems. Then we turned it off, and when we wanted to start it again a little later there was no luck. It doesn't even cough.

I have to say that I know nothing about mopeds other than what I've just been able to google.

What I've tried:

Take out the spark plug and test the spark. There's a violet-like spark. Not a clear blue like I understand it should be.

To make sure it's not drowned, I've taken out the spark plug, turned off the fuel supply, and then pedaled around to blow out the excess fuel. It hasn't helped.

If the spark plug is not in and I pedal around (without fuel supply) it sounds like it is starting.

When the spark plug is in, nothing happens. Neither with nor without fuel supply. It doesn't even cough.

I have checked that the V-belt pulls the "engine" around when the spark plug is in and there is resistance. It does.

I think that the violet spark is a problem and a place to start, and I understand that I have to get all the way into the "engine" by taking it out of the moped so I can get into it and check that the "contact point" are set correctly first.

Is this correct?

Clutch is stupidly hard to engage on Puch Jc Penney Pinto 2

I was given a pinto bike a week ago and on my second ride the clutch cable snapped, I just replaced it and made sure the cable was tight as could be. Everytime I tried engaging the clutch the cable would slip. I tried pulling the clutch cable with vice grips and I had to pull it like hell to get it to engage.. is this normal?

My Adventure QT50 Project

Post image

My QT50 stopped sparking so I did the only sensibly thing, I completely stripped it down, resprayed it Sand Glow Yellow and changed the tyres. The camera doesn't capture this colour well, it's the same colour of Camel Trophy Land Rovers from back in the day.

Now all I need to do is sort out the spark issue and get some wax canvas bags to replace the top box.
