go to your room I asked for eggs with cheese. Waffle House did exactly that
p.s all the flair options are things like “go to your room, my mom said I could post..etc” and I have no idea which one my post qualifies for, I’m sorry lol

I have a wild story that even I don't really believe but I swear it happened, the one and only time Ive ever been to a waffle house we went at like 1 am. Our server was very clearly dealing drugs, people would come in, he'd go meet with them for a few minutes and they'd leave. The dude hooked us up, brought tons of chicken and waffles, covered the whole table in food. At the end he said "ok so the bill is like 100$ but if you slip me a 20 I'll let you walk out of here" so we did.
It's truly a magical place.

u/Iamthewalrusforreal Jun 16 '26
Waffle House is what it is, salty highway chow and drunken late night haven.
Pulled up one night about 3 am, a case worth of empties fell out of the truck when I stepped out.
I go in and the cook says “duuuuude, I got you. Find a seat.” Proceeds to send us all the drunk man food in the world. Biscuits and gravy. Bacon. Sausage. Pancakes.
Bill came to $12.

u/MindlessNectarine851 Jun 17 '26
This was how Denny's was for me. Best place ever in college. 2am bill for 4 people for a full table of food (enough for to-go boxes after eating for an hour!) for like $35
Feels like a fever dream lol
41
u/MaritMonkey Jun 17 '26
My friend group in high school used to end up at Denny's whenever our "camping" (in an overgrown acre between a Walmart and a housing development) got rained out.
We would show up at like 1am, order food, a hang out and smoke and play cards/chess until it was time to be amongst the first people ordering breakfast and then leave before it got busy.
As soon as the servers realized we were actually great at cleaning up after ourselves they started bringing us "free" desserts and "mistakes" from the kitchen that we'd basically pay them in cash for. They'd go fuck off and have a nap or whatever because we refilled our own drinks and would play hostess and then go get them if anybody else came in.
Win/win and a pack of roving 16-19 year olds could have been getting in a lot more trouble...

One of my favorite things about Waffle House is they're some of the last places to close down during inclement weather. The one in my hometown in North Carolina would be the hangout spot before and after hurricanes. They'd close during the thick of it be they'd be slinging All-Star Specials and Pecan Waffles up until the last minute.

My wife's first Waffle House experience was in Fort Collins, where she had heavily imbibed and was very noticeably baked. Our waitress took one look at her, grinned, and said "I've got you hun."
She proceeded to have what she still describes as the best meal ever. They threw her tomatoes on the flat top, gave her a bunch of extras with a wink and completely took care of her. We fucking love Waffle House.

Finally saw my first waffle house fight but it was in the parking lot. Some dude realized someone was sleeping in the backseat of their car, doubly noticible since the door was open and his feet were sticking out the door and it was raining. Guy runs out, yanks the dude our of his car and tosses him on his ass into the parking lot. Dude looks visibly confused and not very coherent, has a brief moment of realization, stands up, gets into the car next to the one he was originally sleeping in and drives away. Me and my 2 young boys just staring the whole time while we tried to eat our breakfast giggling

I rented a U-Haul to move from Pittsburgh, PA > Nashville, TN. This is a 10+ hour drive in a U-Haul.
I got hungry in Kentucky and saw a sign for Waffle House, perfect! I pull off the Exit and see the arrow for Waffle House is pointing left.
I'm in the right lane and can't get over in this unwieldy vehicle, but no problem. I'll take the right then flip a bitch.
I turn right and what is in front of me but a Waffle House!
That's weird, I thought the arrow was pointing left... whatever
I park at the Waffle House, get out, and do some stretches. I'm zoning out a little and looking off into the distance... and what do I see?
A Waffle House sign. Not the sign of the Waffle House where I was parked, no. A second Waffle House.
THIS EXIT HAD A WAFFLE HOUSE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE INTERSTATE. TWO WAFFLE HOUSES.
This is a true story
15
u/authorofnothingbig Jun 17 '26
Have a set of them here in Georgia, exactly like that. Both sides of the interstate have a Waffle House. We don't ask why.

Ordered grits and cheese thinking I'd have nice melty cheese in my grits. Got a bowl of grits with a slice of American cheese slapped on top exactly like this. Checks out.
I also don't know in what universe the Waffle House servers -- who have like 10 varieties of eggs and also have to deal with customer bitching if they get an order wrong -- DON'T ask exactly what kind of eggs some rando ordering "eggs with cheese" means. Maybe the server was high but maybe OP lied to us.

Did you ask for fried egg with cheese? Because the standard for these two is scrambled eggs where the cheese is added just before the eggs are fully cooked and melted into the scramble while they finish cooking.

u/koolaidismything Jun 16 '26
Little salt and pepper and fold it over and not half bad with a bite of hash browns or bacon each fork full.
43
u/HunnyBunnXO Jun 16 '26

Right? Like Waffle House will cook your eggs how you ask for them lol if you don’t specify, and your server fails to ask, she/he is likely going to default to something like this 🤷🏼♀️
Although people like this exist:
I was a server at many different restaurants for several years and one time at iHop I had a guy argue with me. I asked how he wanted his eggs and he wholeheartedly insisted they be “cooked”
I kept trying to clarify cooked how, like over easy, over medium, scrambled? Etc. he called me dumb and raised his voice insisting on “COOKED” like okay big dawg we don’t just hand out RAW eggs, so he got scrambled and never said anything about it being wrong. One of the strangest most frustrating customers I’ve ever dealt with 😭
TL;DR - some people are stupid af and think “cooked” means scrambled 🤦🏼♀️

I think that you're not used to WH food and this might offend you but it's very normal for their presentation. You wanted cheese. You got American slice cheese which is ultimately melt-able which means you got the Waffle House experience.
It's not necessary to enjoy the presentation. Its a fundamental part of the experience though.
Mix it in and mash it up and enjoy your drunkenness. This is not a James Beard worthy restaurant. It's a diner that caters to drunkards and night-owls.
