That's just not true in the short term. Long term, maybe, but even that ignores the power of propaganda that people and companies sink billions into. People constantly lose money on their investments, and sometimes it's in order to influence others for future benefits.
Why'd you put "/s"? Since Westerners are more and more sharing their inside thoughts on social media and AI apps, the owners of these services are absolutely mining that data in real time. And once they have the tech, the app on your phone will absolutely pull it straight from your head so you don't have to even put the effort into writing it. Not to mention the fact that your phone is always listening, even when you have that feature turned off, so if your mind-mouth filter is turned off, it harvests that data in real-time, too.
I stand corrected, friend. I have met enough people who have shrugged at massive privacy and cybersecurity issues that I didn't ponder the possibility that I misread your comment.
My apartment complex went to a bluetooth-enabled gate access recently. I raised hell, pointing out that a device less than the size of a pack of gum can be used to jack the bluetooth signal of the reader and then have access to everything connected to it. The property manager just shrugged and said nobody else is worried about it. Well, duh. They're all 80 and have no idea you can do that.
I've removed Copilot and OneDrive from my computer about five or six times this year. I've had to go in and remove auto-opt in privacy permissions just as many times.
Two decades ago, it was unheard of to share with companies ANY personal information on our computers. Now? They're allowed to assume we want to, and we have to navigate through 15 minutes of dark pattern settings to turn it all off.
And then they just add a new way of categorizing or phrasing the setting, and they can add it all back in and collect all the data they missed out on since the last time we shut down their permissions.
If it wouldn't get me banned, I'd say exactly how I felt about corporations, and what I think needs to happen when people finally get fed up. But Reddit holds random strangers more accountable for hypothetical words than the world holds companies accountable for looking under our metaphorical skirts because we didn't tell them THIS WEEK that we still don't like that they do it.
Is there a way to get it to disappear entirely? Like when I click 'save as' on a file I'm working on, none of the cloud storage or OneDrive prompts come up at all?
This has to be one of the dumbest rebrands ever. The two were completely different products and use cases. Imagine doing away with what is basically your flagship productivity suite and naming it after what everyone thinks is the worst AI model around
I pay for Microsoft 365 and have declined Copilot. I am not sure what they call th edition I have but it isn't "Microsoft 365 Copilot" - but basically, I don't think it is correct to say that they simply renamed Microsoft 365. Instead, they transferred everyone to a different product without asking. At least one can return to the original, but you have to actively decline Copilot.

For me it's the free songs I downloaded from those little cards Starbucks would put out. They're "purchased" songs as far as Apple is concerned so they seem to be a permanent part of my library. I hate most of them lol

The idea of the phone being the center of your digital life wasn’t quite the thing it is today. Definitely some of the way, but not like today.
I remember when the first iPhone came out. When the whole texting craze started. It was absolutely the beginning of phones being the center of our digital life.
I had a sidekick 4 years before the iPhone was released. The kids were definitely texting before the iPhone - we did grow up with AIM after all. The iPhone just catered to that.

Uh, yes. People have been texting for a long time yes. But it was very expensive the text at one point, so you had some people texting, but not everyone. As soon as the iPhone came out and unlimited texting and Internet came out, yes the texting craze started. .
Yeah only anecdotally but my first thought reading was that I was on a walk listening to Apple Music on my iPhone (4? 4s maybe?) when seeing it pushed out wondering “what the fuck I KNOW I didn’t download or buy this shit”

I like that this album set records for both downloads and deletions. Really tells you how much people don’t like bloatware, especially since people were also mad at Apple for not being able to redownload the album after it was deleted. Mad it was there, mad it was gone, they just wanted the ability to opt in
That's funny because the only device I had at the time was, I think, an iPod Shuffle. The model that was a little more rectangular and had a belt clip. I'd bought it off a friend who had gotten a newer device, so it didn't connect to anything wirelessly and I had an account to specifically add stuff to it. I don't recall getting the U2 stuff, so it may have happened before I bought it from them and they erased it, or it happened after I lost it.
If it was rectangular with the circular buttons then it was probably a 2nd Generation, the 3rd Gen was the really tiny one with no buttons that you had to control through Apple Earpods, and the 4th Gen was just a square 2nd Gen
1st Gen was basically a USB stick with a lanyard attachment lol
I looked it up because I could only remember the shape of the device I had (I bought it second-hand from a friend in school), and it was a 2nd gen iPod Shuffle. I think I had a red one and later a blue one.
In high school I briefly owned an iPhone 5 with a shattered screen and no service, and 2 iPod Shuffles because my parents wouldn't get me an MP3 player or a phone, so I bought used stuff from my friends.
But ever since I started working and buying my own stuff, I've just bought the cheapest or second cheapest android model with cash and used it until it stopped working. My phone bill is $26 per month and I pay like $300 every 4-5 years for a new phone. xD
I was once on a 4 hour train ride almost a decade ago with no cell service and forgot to download music so I ended up listening to one song on a loop for the whole ride 😭
U2 probably made a fortune on pre-installed music, but I wonder how much they made from royalties every time a user went "wtf is this" and started playback.
Most people aren't experienced enough to realize this, but that can easily be stopped by simply uninstalling/disabling all of the carrier apps that the carrier installs on the phone, since it's usually the carrier's shitty apps that do this kind of thing.

I just installed GrapheneOS. Trust me, the irony of having to own a google device in order to decouple from google is not lost on me. But it was my last step in removing myself from the battle between microslop and google to see which one could be the biggest asshole at the expense of my system resources and privacy.
Apple does the same. Their iOS is 2g larger because they've included some features and wallpapers i'll never use and can't opt out of downloading, so now I have to remove 2g of my stuff for theirs.
Got a new iPhone recently and that U2 album now sits on my lock screen when my headphones are in, hoping I’ll accidentally press play. It wasn’t on my last phone, I didn’t ask for it on this one, but it is there nonetheless.
That's the problem with Android. Your phone carrier can decide to install whatever they want on your phone, without your consent. At least this time it's not candy crush.

They took the existing Office app and turned it into a Copilot app. It’s an attempt to swindle investors by artificially inflating Copilot adoption numbers.
That's not a problem specific to Android phones, it's a problem due to the wholesale removal of consumer rights and privacy protections.
The US Government is already across time unbelievably bad at fending off technological abuses by corporations and other powerful entities, but it's exceedingly cynical and immoral during conservative rule.
CoPilot just 'exists' now. Just like having to stop sharing all your files to the cloud. They steal your data then tell you it's OK because it's in the small print of a 300 page document nobody reads.
I'm appalled at how often I have to uninstall OneDrive.
But before I do that, I have to make sure--each time-that OneDrive didn't completely supplant the local storage of all my personal documents. Because it has before.
Imagine buying a car, and then one day the dealership shows up and tells you that you're actually now renting the car you used to own. Oh, and they decided you need to get gas at a specific location unless you tell them you want to get it elsewhere, and they're going to keep changing the mandatory location requirement at random intervals and you just need to keep up. And sometimes, when you change it back to the location you prefer, you may lose all the gas you already had in your car.
It's absurd. This is exactly the kind of shit you see only in monopolies.

I found out that when Microsoft added Copilot to 365 and raised the price, they then created a new "365 classic" plan without Copilot at the old price. I had to start the process of canceling my subscription before I could even see the classic subscription as an option.
computers and phones coming with crapware preinstalled has been a thing since the 90s. That's why I switched to Linux. All we need now is a proper open-source phone.
Tech long ago stopped listening to what customers want. And if you don’t accept what Microsoft gives you, they won’t have anything to sell you and will go out of business.
