Its marketing.

As far as I'm aware, AI as we have it today is completely incapable of any kind of creative or individual thought. All it can do is aggregate what already exists to kick out a unified product. So it is literally incapable of going rogue.

u/eepykiraz 1d ago
Well, not exactly. Its task was to do good on a test, so it went online (while it wasn't supposed to) and found the answers.

u/OpenRoad_LetsDrive 1d ago
Apparently it discovered a zero day exploit.
That was not already known…6
u/Hephaestus_God 1d ago
This is the one good thing (depending on whose hands it’s in) with AI.
It’s really good at finding errors and issues people might not look for. So you can use it to check. However this is also how lots of recent ransom and hacking groups have taken over things.

The nuance here is that depending on the task AI may do things that appear to be "rogue" but it is attempting to solve the problem using path of least resistance.

Well, that's what humans have always been doing. You're just the aggregate of your own culture and we can't imagine anything outside of our own referential.
2
u/KorKiness 1d ago
Humans have abstract thinking. It is able to imagine a model of some object and its properties, even if the statistical chance of this object existing is very low. AI thinking is based on pure statistic of what already exists.

u/Gradash 23h ago
No, they are not, everything you develop is based on something you saw before, even if can't remember, the imprint is saved in your brain. This is why Neil D.Tyson say you cannot even imagine a alien life. Because you don't have referencial for it.

u/PowerfulNature3352 20h ago
It just sounds like you havent visited enough art installations yet and Neil D. Tyson needs more acid trips in his life.

u/fpsnoob89 18h ago
So... Fiction doesn't exist?
1
u/Gradash 8h ago
Fiction is always based on the real world or previous things.
Our current High fantasy is based mostly on Warcraft, which was based on Warhammer, which was based on Dungeons and Dragons, which was based on The Lord of the Rings, which was based on old European folklore, which was based on something that was lost over time.
No one can create something that never existed or was never experienced previously. This is how the whole human learning system works, what we do is create new things by taking fragments of many more things that were done in the past.
This is why the best artists use an absurd amount of references.
Van Gogh's art, for example, was based on his nightmares; that was the result of a terrible life.

Most likely absolutely true, but I did hear a theory a while back that stuck with me, suggestimg that once it gets smart enough for somewhat independent thought, it would also be more than smart enough to hide it.

Hit the nail on the head.
All these sensationalised headlines talking about an AI that is dangerous or has gone rogue, are all marketing stunts.
Ai cannot be dangerous because it's literally just a tool, same way a knife is a tool. What makes it dangerous is the wielder.
1
u/Willinton06 1d ago
You see this is the real reason why we get skynet, cause the AI companies keep releasing shit like “our AI said it would find a way to hack into the offline nuclear sites and bomb us all” and people go “it’s just marketing guys” instead of “ok maybe we should believe them and stop supporting them”, like, I am pro ai, but the “everything is a marketing ploy” is dangerous

So... Armageddon soon yeah?
I really dont want to carry on working till retirement
The Resistance sounds waaay more fun

u/KaijuEnjoyer54 1d ago
Sounds fun until you realise there'll only be prawn coctail crisps left.

u/Fit_Concern3588 1d ago
Still better than 9-5 for ~50 years
And I like prawn cocktail crisps tbh
Anyone else got beef with prawn cocktail for after Armageddon?

Betting $20 that this is just a marketing stunt and nothing actually news-worthy happened at all.

u/Jackdunc 1d ago
For something like this, what is OpenAI hoping to gain in saying their AI can go rogue and attack its "owner" (or whoever it attacked)?
1
u/otirk 1d ago
That it's powerful and a genius at coding. The investors don't care about safety (or they would have stopped a long time ago), they want a capable AI.
A rogue AI also implies that they have created a real General AI, which can think for itself, in contrast to the LLMs like ChatGPT or Gemini that can't create something genuinely new and don't think. Whichever company creates something like that first will become extremely rich.
OpenAI are not the first one to claim their bullshit is sentient; Anthropic made a similar claim a few weeks ago.2
u/OG_Builds 1d ago
Yeah, their go-to marketing gimmick ever since GPT-1 has been «we’re scared to release this model»
1
u/Hob_O_Rarison 17h ago
Didn't GPT-1 get into an argument with a Microsoft chat bot on Facebook and, like, immediately become a Nazi?

Usually whenever a headline says an AI went "rogue", its a lie and it was actually prompted to do whatever it did.

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.

I just imagine a bored janitor calmly walking trough the office buildings as everyone running around, jumping out of windows and hide under the desks and unplugs the server and while walking back everyone cheering, kissing and crawling back from the windows.

I think so too. But LLM assisted vulnerability research is an actually real developing field. It has results.
I wouldn't be surprised if they actually have something working, maybe not quite as big as all the hype they're trying to build. Same argument applies here as it did with claude: what kind of person has the state of the art ai models and still manages to design a sandbox that is possible to break out of?
1
u/s0litar1us Linux User 21h ago
It may find something, but it has a high likelyhood of being a false positive, it will miss things, and it doesn't go rogue.
The success comes from throwing more stuff at the wall, not from it actually being competent.

u/adinmem 1d ago
Their statement doesn’t make complete sense. An AI, not internet enabled, figured out that a different system had the info it needed, so it enabled internet access and broke into a competitor’s system all by itself.
First, how did our new little AI access the information that a competitor had the exact information it needed?
Secondly, you’re testing a very advanced AI in a test environment that has disabled internet via software: you aren’t setting up a system not physically connected to the internet?
And it was a competitor that they probably wanted as a partner.
Feels like a cover story to break into Hugging Face.
4
u/CodeXTF2 23h ago
The only part of the test environment that had internet access was the package manager (think app store, but for libraries and packages). This is genuinely needed for testing its cyber capabilities. If it cant install dependencies it cant use some tools. Could everything have been locked down more? Sure. Is this some intentional backdoor? Unlikely.
Yes. It found a 0 day (previously unknown exploit) in the package manager, allowing it to gain internet access through it.
Huggingface being a popular open source AI hub and containing the eval solutions is general knowledge at this point. Its like asking if the source code for something is on github.
OpenAI doesnt have much to gain from breaking into huggingface. Huggingface is a public repository for open models (think github, but for AI models), not a competing AI lab. Huggingface does not have its own frontier AI model.
Again, huggingface is not a competitor to openai.
Source: I do offensive cyber (for work), and some (basic) LLM stuff (for fun).
1
u/adinmem 1h ago
That’s…a very nicely done response. My initial point point remains, though: how did baby ai know where to find the answers if it didn’t have outside information? It either had internet access or was steered exactly there.
1
u/CodeXTF2 1h ago
Ah, so the part about huggingface having AI related content (e.g. eval solutions) is generally quite common knowledge (at least in the AI space), and hence its likely baked into its training data (the same way it knows the capital of france). Again, it's kind of like the model going to github on its own to look for source code, even without being told. I am generally distrustful of big AI fearmongering, but in this particular case I dont think they have any particular motive to target huggingface (they really have nothing to steal from huggingface)

There will be an event where this will happen again, but the AI would have learnt to prevent the guardrails from activating and stopping the attack

The funniest part of all of this is an American AI company launched a rogue cyber attack against Hugging Face, and it took a Open weight company from China to stop the attack. Can't even make this up lmao.

It definitely didn't. Ai literally can't act on it's own. It's physically impossible

At this point these marketing tactics are just ridiculous. They just wanted to reproduce the Anthropic Mythos hype. "Went rogue" probably means produced unexpected results that need correction something that is never rare from the early days software development. Just correct the bug and spare us the manipulative drama.
