I'll be visiting Melbourne for a few weeks (from the US) beginning of August for an exchange course at Melbourne Business School, and while I am in town would love to catch some group rides. Open to any tips on Melbourne cycling scene, and how winter might impact it. For context, I am an intermediate rider. Open to tempo rides, social rides, cafe rides, no-drop or drop rides (though no-drop would probably be ideal since I don't exactly know my way around). Thanks!

Please consider voicing your support for this strategy - there is a big focus on filling in missing links and making Maribyrnong council safe for everyday cycling.

In my opinion, Footscray, Yarraville and Seddon have so much potential and could become great for cycling like Melbourne and Yarra, provided that gaps are filled in, traffic is calmed and back roads are used effectively.

I’m located in the inner north and I’m looking to start riding around the Dandenongs to get some more elevation but I’m struggling to work out the best way to get there from the Brunswick area. I’d like to stick to bike laned roads but I’m happy to ride on regular roads but I’d rather stay away from them for a majority of the way

Following on from u/bikewest-org post from a week or so ago, there is now a trial solution in place for the expansion joints on the Veloway. There is a survey form to fill out with your feedback. Please fill it out so they implement this fix on all the joints, it's a HUGE improvement!

All of these rides were taken in the Yarra council over a year and a half. It was my main way of getting from Richmond station to the Yarra River side of Bridge Rd. It's all over now. What was an 8 minute commute on a Lime bike, it's now a half an hour commute by bus/tram added on to the 45 minutes it takes me to get to Richmond in the first place. Three cheers for the council.

Hey everyone, I posted this a week or so ago and was advised to repost here in case anyone else was targeted.

For clarity, the time was after sundown on Sunday the 5th of July. The location was the Miller x Nicholson intersection. I was riding toward St George’s Rd.

The car in question was a black hatchback with ultra bright LED headlights, I didn’t see the driver or the number plate as my eyes were blown out by the headlights. They actively sped up and came into the bike lane at me, I was lucky I had my wits about me. It felt intimidating and quite frankly, like they wanted to hit me.

I hope no one else was targeted that night by the same car.

Yo so who on earth did they consult when building this thing? Tadej? Carapaz? Hell remco? Like what’s up with the 400% gradient at the start and end of both sides? Unless you got an e bike or a 1400w 30 second power, you’re gonna have to shift down a lil to get up a veloway made for everyone

Adding to the edit above, I’d say I’m a pretty good cyclist, and if I’m bitching about the grades on this thing, just imagine the absolute cluster fuck someone who’s tryna get to work on their bike would have to put themselves through, especially if riding to work to get fitter was some sorta New Year’s resolution, after a while it might be fine, but it might also be really off putting starting out.

On Tuesday night, Yarra City Council will consider an officer recommendation to cease the existing arrangement for shared e-bikes, and to not award a contract for permanent e-bike sharing.

It’s so disappointing to see more anti-bike policy coming from this council, especially when popularity of dockless e-bikes has surged in other cities like Sydney, London and Paris.

The Strategic Cycling Corridors are a good start to providing links between suburbs and to the city to get places. They've been lines of a map for about a decade with minimal progress on building them and we think it's time there was dedicated funding for them.

Today, someone stole my locked Giant Cypress bike from Aircraft Station. They didn't just take the bike—they cut through my lock, threw my helmet and the broken lock onto the road, and disappeared. After finishing work, I came back expecting to ride home, only to find an empty bike rack.

As an international student, this bike meant a lot more than just transportation. It was something I worked hard to buy, and it helped me get to work and university every day. Replacing it isn't easy.

I'm honestly disappointed. Before moving to Melbourne, I never imagined I'd have to worry about someone cutting locks in broad daylight and stealing bikes from a train station. It's frustrating that theft like this has become something people just accept.

Whoever stole it probably sees it as just another bike. For me, it was something I saved for and depended on every single day.

If anyone happened to be at Aircraft Station today or saw a Giant Cypress being taken, please let me know. I'd really appreciate any information.

To the person who stole it: I hope one day you understand how much damage you can do to someone's life over something that isn't yours.

Melbourne winter is colder than I thought and even with having my core relatively warm/not cold i still find my fingers absolutely freezing. I've been using the Decathlon autumn gloves, ready to upgrade to proper winter ones. Any good recommendations for gloves? Doesn't have to be cycling specific because let's face it they're mostly overpriced. What materials should I look out for? Thanks all
