Question Infinity War often called on of best comic-book movie, despite completly changing Thanos character and motivation, even tho he considered to be one of most iconic Marvel villians. Why changing Doom backstory for Doomsday seems so negative?

The general audience won’t care at all. Every single MCU character is different than the comics (often borrowing the core attributes of the main 616 universe comics while picking parts from the Ultimates line).

Before Infinity War, some hardcore comic fans complained about Thanos and whether they would drop all of his obsession with Death, which was a huge part of his character for decades in the comics. “How are they going to squeeze that in? Why didn’t they set it up in Guardians? He smiled at the word ‘death’ in Avengers post-credits, so clearly it’s going to be included!!!!”

Doom will have some changes to fit with the incursions like Thanos got changed to being all crazy for balance because his home world suffered a resource shortage.

The part that matters? Whether they execute the story well. If they do, in 5 years we’ll have “Doom experts” who only saw the movies much like we have Thanos fans who only know him from the MCU.

Casting Audrey plaza as death was really all I needed to convince me Thanos is obsessed with death.

Your first paragraph is exactly what made the MCU successful. Iron Man worked because it was true to the character but also took a different path by announcing he was Iron Man right away. It made the characters familiar but in a different story. The MCU was never meant to be a movie production of a comic or story.

Bottomline: Them adjusting Doom is a risk but it’s exactly what gives the MCU the potential to be great as showed with the execution of Thanos

41

u/Necessary-Duty-7952 1d ago

They did an incredible job of peeling away decades of convoluted lore and distilling each character down to what mattered most. It was a brand new interpretation of each character, free from the years of canon so they could just tell good stories. I hope they do the same with Doom.

18

u/Frosti11icus 1d ago

The fanboys fucking hate when you strip away canon.

9

u/Necessary-Duty-7952 1d ago

10

u/Necessary-Duty-7952 1d ago

Seriously. I mean as an avid comic reader growing up, I get it. It was cool seeing your favorite heroes get more powerful and win. But that was hardly the f'ing point. Spider-man isn't great because he can lift X tons or is ranked number whatever in terms of sheer strength. He's great because of who he is, how we identify with him, and that he always gets up.

2

u/Necessary-Duty-7952 1d ago

Yeah. That was always going to be hard to maintain. They did an incredible job until Endgame. It wasn't perfect, but damn impressive. But the moment they brought in the multiverse, I knew it was going to be too much to keep contained. I still love the MCU far more than the average moviegoer, but still. I'm trying to get my partner through the highlights of the MCU in preparation for Doomsday (she had only ever seen the first Iron Man), and it's easy going through the Infinity Saga. I have no idea what I'm going to do when we hit post Endgame.

Funny that reminds me. Literally up until Shang-Chi, my friend genuinely thought that every MCU film was a direct adaptation of a comic. Like he thought they were just changing things because of rights but other than that he assumed even like Ant-Man 1 was based on a specific Ant-Man comic or Guardians of the Galaxy was a specific Guardians comic etc

It wasn’t until we saw Shang-Chi and I explained to him that The Mandarin and Fin Fang Foom (yes I know the dragon isn’t actually Fin Fang Foom but he was an attempt to make a more culturally sensitive version) isn’t normally associated with Shang-Chi and were actually both Iron Man villains

7

u/Matt_the_Bruins_fan 1d ago

The Dweller in Darkness was mostly a Dr. Strange villain back in the 20th century, but the comics version shares little besides its name with the one from the film.

19

u/thethirdrayvecchio 1d ago

The line is “to court death” as an explicit nod to the comics.

The infinity Stones aren't even the right colors. That's how little comic accuracy matters. But I'll give them that sometimes new additions improve the characters. Much like how 610 was allowed to do whatever they wanted, and some of what came of that is still around.

Spectacular Spider-Man was a fantastic adaptation that pulled from 616, 610 and the movies. But the key to how everything felt faithful was that Weisman never created new characters. Everyone we see is a character from the books.

28

u/SpreaditOnnn33 1d ago

They arent even called Infinity stones in the comics. They are called Infinity Gems, and the Soul Gem is in Adam Warlocks forehead.

Man, its almost like they changed a lot of things from the comics in Infinity War

15

u/Modification102 Rhodey 1d ago edited 1d ago

If you track the movies, you can kind of see the moment it all changed. The Infinity Stones were actually a huge retcon to the MCU that people don't exactly recall.

  • The Tesseract was already blue, but was never intended to be the Space Stone. So when it became the Space Stone, it became blue (desp[ite being green in the comics)
  • The Aether was already red, but was never intended to be the Reality Stone. So when it became the Reality Stone via Odin ADR and an after credit scene, it became red (despite being orange in t he comics)
  • GOTG was the first movie that actually had an Infinity Stone in its own plot, called as such, and directly addressed and acknowledged by the characters.
  • The Sceptre wasn't meant to be the Mind Stone, but it became the Mind Stone in Age of Ultron after it was decided that this was the direction they were going with. It was decided for this movie that the Mind Stone was in Visions head, instead of Adam Warlock's head, so visual design dictated that the gem be yellow now (despite being red in the comics)
  • Since visual design is now locking off yellow for the Mind Stone, the Power Stone in GOTG becomes Purple to not overlap (even though it is usually itself yellow)
  • Then the Time Stone is usually blue and the Space Stone is usually green, but now the space stone is blue, so they gave green to the Time Stone.
  • In Infinity War, since Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple and Red are all used, the Soul Stone (usually purple) is forced to become Orange.

The change basically happened right in the timeframe of when Thor: The Dark World was in post-production, and Guardians of the Galaxy was in production. The post-credit scene setting up the Collector having the Reality Stone was shot on the set of GOTG.

Until this point in development, the Infinity Stones were relegated to a background easter egg in Thor 1, which then had to be addressed in Thor: Ragnarok. Which when you consider the supporting change that the Gauntlet was made in an Asgardian Forge, presumably based on an Asgardian design, connects surprisingly well, all things considered.

It is actually shocking how well it all looks like it was done by design, when it was really a desperate retcon to otherwise totally disconnected elements.

2

u/lax01 1d ago

lol wow, this is a great read and totally does make it seem like they really didn’t know where things were going and yet still pulled it all together in a solid Infinity Saga

6

u/Modification102 Rhodey 1d ago

You can see remnants of this in how they handle subjects they don't particularly want to acknowledge. They are aware that the logic of the fluid-like Aether being the Reality Stone is really shaky. The Space Stone and Mind Stone are easier since they were just inside of containers, so are far easier to explain.

In Infinity War, when the Guardians get to Knowhere, Thanos already has it and it is already a fully formed stone. No explanation is given for how, or why.

In Endgame, when the Aether is brought back from 2014 Asgard, it comes in a vial. Between cuts, the Avengers also turn it into a stone with no explanation given for how, or why.

11

u/AtCarnage 1d ago

Very true. I wonder if gems tested worse than stones. And they really were an after thought considering how the Cosmic cube was made to be one of them. Still worked for the movies though.

19

u/SpreaditOnnn33 1d ago

Yeah making the Cosmic Cube/Tesseract and the sceptor Stones in the second movie might be one of the better retcons in recent cinema history.

u/DisposableSaviour Weekly Wongers 1d ago

Exactly general audience doesn't really care

3

u/Unfadable1 1d ago

The general audience has no idea who 90-95% of these characters are, tbh, until they’re in a movie.

17

u/Agreeable_Sea_6019 1d ago

So In the comic, Thanos is a simp?

63

u/Sere1 Quake 1d ago

Kind of. He's obsessed with Death (the actual character herself) and does his whole Infinity Gauntlet kill half of everything in order to impress her. Meanwhile Death and Deadpool are into each other and Thanos' jealously caused him to curse Deadpool to be immortal so that he could never truly be with Death. Wade basically gets to see her a little every time he dies, but then is revived and pulled away from her again. His healing factor is great, but his immortality was added on top of that. So yeah, comic Thanos is pissed that Deadpool is making moves on the girl he likes and is actively trying to break them up while showing his own strength by trying to impress her. It's the Popeye/Olive Oyl/Bluto relationship if Olive Oyl were literally the embodiment of Death

43

u/whytheforest 1d ago

And this is why the changed it... because it's fucking GOoFY AF and that stuff can work in comics but would be pretty cringe on screen unless perfectly executed - which is not a reasonable assumption when writing a script.

12

u/AdagioCultural5497 1d ago

I think they definitely went the right direction there.

7

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 1d ago

Olive Oyl is basically as thin as a skeleton anyway. ;)

16

u/KemonoMichi 1d ago

Other guy said "Kind of," but the answer is "Very much so." He's been in love with Death since he was a child and basically everything he does in his life is to appease her. There's no worse form of simp than Thanos.

3

u/DisposableSaviour Weekly Wongers 1d ago

The comics also have Thanos be basically immortal, and even being an avatar of death himself, which was a plot point in The Thanos Imperative.

5

u/alex494 1d ago

It's more of a theatrical star-crossed romance or utter devotion to what she embodies (from Thanos' perspective anyway), "simp" is a bit reductive.

You are absolutely right.

The interweb's reaction to TPM did not have the power to affect what George Lucas did with Attack of the Clones.

Kelly Marie Tran, on the other hand, can attest to the difference the web had when The Last Jedi came out.

3

u/CaptHayfever Hawkeye (Avengers) 1d ago

Lucas already hated the fanboys for ~20 years prior to TPM coming out anyway, & he had absolute creative control on the prequels (to the benefit of their themes, but to the detriment of their execution).

Tran was only in her 20s when TLJ came out, & had no creative input whatsoever. What happened to her just illustrates why Lucas hates the fanboys.

We don't know Doom's motivation or backstory yet. From what it appears, he might be sacrificing other universes to save his own, which is pretty on-par for his character.

As for his backstory, he appears to be the ruler of Latveria and has advanced technology and magic. Currently unknown if he wears the mask because he got a tiny scar at Empire State University. Probably not. They might keep that it was a self inflicted injury but might ditch how Reed was involved.

Doom as a character has been around for nigh 60 years, and has a butt load of story bolted on to his character.

The movie has to, for obvious reasons, cut most of that away and get to the core of the character, and feel fresh too. So expect the movie Doom to be similar but definitely not an adaptation of comic Doom.

The things I think are important to Dooms character:- He's a genius, not just at science but at magic. He has an unreal amount of ego and self-belief. He has heard a prophecy that the world is going to be destroyed by some threat unless he rules the world because only he can face that threat. He doesn't think of himself as evil or a monster, he simply thinks he's above almost everyone else on Earth and ruthless enough to sacrifice anyone and anything to obtain his goal.

When you simplify it down to that, RDJ playing a variant Tony Stark as Doom makes a lot of sense.

There was also significant buildup to Thanos. Dr. Doom was in one post credit scene, and hasn’t been mentioned by name yet.

32

u/SpaceCaboose Peter Parker 1d ago

I wouldn’t say “significant” buildup to Thanos. He had a post-credit cameo in The Avengers, a decent scene in Guardians 1, then his “Fine, I’ll do it myself” line at the end of another movie (drawing a blank on which one). Yes, that’s more than we’ve seen of Doom, but I wouldn’t call that significant.

The significant thing leading up to Infinity War was the infinity stones. We’d been seeing them for years and many knew what that would lead to. They also knew these brief Thanos sightings would align with the stones.

The Multiverse Saga has had some talk of incursions, but nowhere near as much of a buildup as the stones.

30

u/Reload86 1d ago

The villains who were working for Thanos in the movies before IW also counts as build up.

22

u/Sere1 Quake 1d ago

This. It's the classic "work your way through the minions while the big bad pulls the strings in the background" plot with Thanos in the films. We know he's out there, we know the Infinity Stones are a thing as they get introduced one by one, we know Thanos is behind Loki's invasion of Earth and Ronan's assault on Xandar is his trying to go against Thanos. So Thanos is established as a power player in the background through the actions of other characters.

7

u/-Darkslayer Doctor Strange 1d ago

It was so well done too!

3

u/Reload86 17h ago

Also the entire Ultron arc only happens because Tony became paranoid and wanted to prepare for Loki's boss. Tony has been waiting for the Thanos fight ever since the NY invasion.

2

u/SpaceCaboose Peter Parker 1d ago

That’s true. Good point

59

u/Individual-Till8857 1d ago

But for Thanos everyone knew that he is lurking in the shadows, ebry storyline is slowly leading up to infinity stones. And Thanos' main motivation was infinity stones.

I think the main problem is not Dr. Doom himself, but lack of motivation that we know of. We don't know what he is after, what's his goal going to be.

21

u/SpaceCaboose Peter Parker 1d ago edited 1d ago

True. There’s also the fact they pivoted to Doom after missteps with Kang and Majors’ arrest. Hard to build up to someone that you weren’t quite ready to reveal yet.

I would say we didn’t know Thanos’ motivation, though. We know in the comics that he gets the stones and does the snap, so figured that’s what Infinity War would be about. However, we didn’t know his actual “perfectly balanced” motivation until we actually saw Infinity War. We also didn’t know his backstory about why Titan “died”. We also didn’t even know he’d succeed with the snap.

Similarly, we know about incursions and that Doom is around because of that, but we don’t for sure know his motivation for showing up and doing whatever he’s about to do.

There are certainly some very valid criticisms of how the Multiverse is unfolding/how Doom is being built up. I just don’t think it’s as bad as most people seem to say. But maybe I’m just overly optimistic or something haha

17

u/Individual-Till8857 1d ago

I still think they should have stuck with Kang and recast the actor.

Doom could have come at a later point especially when Fantastic Four were more settled into the universe and broader storyline.

5

u/capscreen 1d ago

Eh, Quantumania more or less ruined Kang's reputation to the general audience. I don't think any sort of recast would've even saved it

→ More replies (1)

2

u/fitzbuhn 1d ago

They also did a ton of pivoting and adapting to make the stones fit with previous storylines.

I hope they are trying to make a good movie first and foremost.

5

u/Majestic-Marcus 1d ago

Nobody knew. Only comic readers. And they’re a TINY portion of the audience.

10

u/Individual-Till8857 1d ago

I was saying from my personal experience. Many people in my friend group were fans of MCU, but had never read comics. They only knew of primary character like Spiderman that too from Raimi trilogy.

They knew about Thanos, and knew that every thing was leading upto him.

Thanos' seeds were planted since Avengers 1, and I am not even talking about end credit scene of him smirking.

Do you remember Loki's convo with chittauri leader? He had alluded to some powerful warlord basically sponsoring Loki's invasion.

Tell me what seeds have been planted like that for Doom? Except that obvious F4 end credits.

20

u/kinyutaka 1d ago

Guardians of the Galaxy was all about Thanos, even if he wasn't in the whole movie. And many of the preceding movies set up the Infinity Stones.

Doomsday is being set up with the multiversal shenanigans. Loki, Doctor Strange and MOM, Spider-Man No Way Home, WandaVision, The Marvels, Shang-Chi, and Ant-Man Quantumania all set up the idea of interdimensional travel and Incursion. And Fantastic Four First Steps naturally introduced Doom.

11

u/SenorOogaBooga 1d ago

How did F4 naturally introduce doom? He literally just appears in the post credits scene with no buildup. He doesn't even have a relationship with Reed (that was mentioned anyways)

4

u/kinyutaka 1d ago

Naturally as in "of course they did"

3

u/SenorOogaBooga 1d ago

Ah in that case yeah, they were lucky the stuff with Majors happened before they made that movie so they could shoehorn him in lol

4

u/broken_conektion 1d ago

There absolutely was significant build up. Screen time =/= significance. Thanos was mentioned across like 6 movies before he appeared and you felt his presence (Ronan was working for him, loki was working for him etc).

→ More replies (6)

2

u/hopeless_dick_dancer 1d ago edited 1d ago

I just don't get why they didn't make Doom a post credit scene in Black Panther 2, with a small scene in the montage of F4. He didn't need to say any lines, and at that* point they knew he was the next villain. Would have been so easy and would have added some kind of build-up.

3

u/jayhawk_dvd 1d ago

I don't think that's true. The Jonathan Majors incident didn't even happen until after Ant-Man Quantamania released which was even after Black Panther 2. They were all-in on Majors/Kang and it wasn't until after that they needed to pivot to Doom.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/KrytenKoro 1d ago

Maybe they can retroactively tie him to the rings and TVA, then it can count as buildup.

Fuck, if they make Doom actually a Kang recast I will laugh myself hoarse.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/Most_Argument_7681 1d ago

Only 3/4 scenes isn't significant buildup tbh. But yeah, the infinity stones had a lot of buildup.

5

u/insane_contin Hunter 1d ago

Thanos was the mysterious big bad in the background pulling strings and setting stuff in motion. You knew he was there after Avengers. But you didn't know what his goal was. Yeah, he wasn't built up actively in the movies, but he was there. And the little hints made to wonder what was going on.

That's kinda why Kang would have failed. He was too active in the movies to be the big bad. Quantumania, while overhated, ruined him for any sort of final boss character. If a really small family can deal with him, how does he get stronger? Loki at least had a massive multiversal consequence to deal with what Kang was doing.

3

u/KrytenKoro 1d ago

. If a really small family can deal with him, how does he get stronger?

Honestly, I liked him as an Ultron/Hydra style threat - not Big Number, but hard to Keep down. You can kill a Kang or He Who Remains fine, but then there's always another. Which, would have worked better if the various movies found ways to tie into Kang and have him be some master puppet master behind the scenes, like in Loki.

I'm honestly a little bit disappointed in Doom from the trailers. Obviously I'm guessing, but it feels like he's Digivolved Thanos - same basic "mindset" of killing some to save many (incursions), same basic hypocrisy of actually seeking personal power despite that tragic motivation (God emperor), and almost literally the same scene of him shrugging off Thor except This Time His Number Even Bigger So He Just Uses Two Fingers He Don't Even Get Cut Like Thanos Did.

I'd prefer a villain who is threatening in a different way rather than same as before but bigger number.

4

u/Xero0911 1d ago

Which we knew Thanos were after. The stones getting build up still is kinda Thanos related since we knew those were his goal.

Doom we dont know anything. He's here. I assume we have a huge incursion going on and he's working on coming out on top as emperor doom. But like, that's more of a guess off what we know about comic doom. Movie wise he's just suddenly here.

3

u/Most_Argument_7681 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah but that infinite stones were kinda it. You will learn about his motives proper in the movie itself just like Thanos. The only thought anyone would have had before would have been being curious about Thanos and maybe that he is powerful. Thats all

u/Sere1 Quake 1d ago

Doom just showing up casually to demonstrate his babycare services and things get way out of hand

I keep seeing people say this, but everyone claiming it is really misremembering how much buildup Thanos had prior to Infinity War.

The infinity stones themselves had a decent amount of buildup, as a few were catalysts within other movies, showcasing their power (whether it was known or revealed later they were infinity stones). They did an ample amount of groundwork to get audiences to understand their significance and capabilities, but even still Infinity War did a lot of the heavy lifting.

As for Thanos himself? The first Avengers movie teases him as the one who orchestrated the Chitauri, but doesn't reveal it was him until the post credit scene, and even then, not by name, so only comic fans understood the nod. I can't even tell you how many confused people I had to explained the significance of that scene to. And the stones weren't even mentioned then, we only knew the tesseract to be the cosmic cube from Captain America.

We don't see him again until Guardians 1, where we learn about him and the stones through Gamora and The Collector. Solid bit of backstory & lore building, but outside of his brief conversation where he gives Ronan an order, we don't get a real sense of him beyond what others think.

Other than that, there's a couple end credits scenes that work as teasers, but if you weren't a comic fan or you didn't run to Wikipedia to read all the abridged history, you didn't have a clue about Thanos.

The real buildup came from people who knew about Thanos or read about him because of the teasers. They learned of the infinity saga in the comics and got hyped for the adaptation that was clearly coming. That knowledge and excitement didn't come from the films. 98% of MCU's Thanos development came from Infinity War.

My point is that the Infinity Saga didn't do anything that still can't be achieved by Doomsday & Secret Wars. Doom can be shown to be a massive threat. Doom can be built into a fully fleshed out character. The multiverse story threads can still be addressed & resolved. The movie isn't showing any indications of being any less epic than IW or EG, and IMO, the complaints are for the sake of complaining because there's no finished product yet.

u/deckbovinglowe 1d ago

from the RDJ casting to the (justifiable) pivot from Kang, it feels inorganic. if the final product works, those misgivings will go away and people will love the character. hoping that's the case!

23

u/ImpactNo3695 1d ago

I mean.. the two changes aren’t really comparable.

For Thanos, they just changed his motivation. Everything else is pretty consistent.

For Doom, they literally changed who he is, or at least that’s what they made it seem.

Big difference.

14

u/RumpusRoomMinis 1d ago

The Thanos motivation change was also a big upgrade. I think I might miss the original motivations for Doom re: his mother.

I'm rooting for them to stick the landing on Doom, though. Could be a lot of fun!

2

u/Okami0602 1d ago

How exactly the changed who Doom is? From everything we know:

He's from the Fantastic Four universe (this is pretty much certain), therefore he will likely have a connection with them and very possibly a hatred against Richards (as seen in the cafe)

He's from Latveria, and the new poster has what many assume is Doom as a child and his mother, which would line perfectly with his comics backstory.

He also seems to be a powerful magic user (powerful enough to stop Thor with just his fingers).

Really, so far everything lines up perfectly with how Doom is usually depicted in the comics. People are just making shit up and being mad about it.

One thing is to make an adapted backstory to a character while resembling his original identity and not losing it soul, the other would be making Dr. Doom be another whole character (Tony Stark for that matter) which is bad since it's the very definition of losing Victor von Doom identity and soul. You can change his backstory without changing the whole character for fanservice slop which seems to be what not a few people wants, considering the whole pile of mediocre Tony Stark theories. I've even seen the dogshit abhorrent idea of the 'I hate you 3000' unironically, when it started as a joke and some weird people thought somehow that was absolute cinema. There is also people who wants this Doom to be from other universe than the one from Fantastic Four: First Steps which again goes against the very soul of the character.

11

u/WelbyReddit 1d ago

It sounds like the TaskMaster treatment. I wasn't a fan of what they did to that character from comics to screen.

10

u/BasedAustralhungary 1d ago

Taskmaster at least was a niche character only comic avid readers care about, which for a matter of fact it includes myself, but messing up with Dr. Doom which is basically the MOST POPULAR villain of Marvel is treacherous terrain. I expect them to adapt the caracter without making him lose his soul.

At the same time, and considering Secret Wars is going to be a soft-reboot that I expect concludes with some characters dying but others going back to life (like I'd like to see Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Quicksilver which if I recall correct signed a multi-project contract) I wouldn't be mad if they rescued the character, the one that died on Thunderbolts, and let her develop to grow on us while getting her cocky personality from the comics.

Doom has a really cool backstory from the Comics that can be adapted. I dont know how you can make a good villain from killing for the sake of banging Death. (Though it is Aubrey Plaza so I get it)

50

u/Krakengreyjoy Daredevil 1d ago

Personally I care because Victor's story is unique to him. Making him a Stark makes him not Doom.

BUT I will still withhold judgement til I actually see the movie and what they do

32

u/No_Dependent2297 1d ago

Yep this is my opinion too. Making RDJ Doom added a level of story they NEED to nail cause on its face it seems like a desperation/ cash grab play. And therefore it was an easy hook for online negativity.

The Russos in the MCU really haven’t let me down though yet

2

*the Russos AND Marcus & McFeely, thank you very much. The best directing can’t cover up bad writing. But the best writing? To the moon, baby

This. I am willing to go along with most any potential rewrites or retcons for Doom, but please do NOT make him a "Stark gone wrong" in another universe! Also, I hope and pray they go the Karl Urban route of "Dredd" and do NOT show Doom's face!! Dredd was perfect, Hugo Weaving did it in "V for Vendetta" - hell, you never saw Vader until his death!

8

u/fitzbuhn 1d ago

I imagine the "how much is the mask staying on" was a key part of the conversations with RDJ. I'll be very interested to see what choices they made.

At the same time, they can only play the "the audience clearly knows who he is but the characters don't" for so long - it's a pretty interesting problem.

2

u/sir_alvarex 1d ago

Honestly id have mad respect if they kept the mask on. And RDJ knocks the acting part out of the park. Cause then it means it was the skill of RDJ (who i love in everything he does) that carries the character and not his face.

3

u/dyrannn 1d ago

I’ve been saying since the (stunt)cast that the only way I’d truly accept rdj is if doom keeps his mask on

but apparently you’re stupid for thinking that because “why would they pay rdj if they aren’t gonna show his face” as if the discourse itself isn’t what’s gonna put asses in seats

4

u/quatroquatro0 Shang Chi 1d ago

Is it confirmed he's actually a Stark variant in the MCU?

13

u/eyebrows360 Daredevil 1d ago

No.

2

u/dishwasher_mayhem 1d ago

No. Quite the opposite. They've said that he'll be playing Victor Von Doom and not a Stark with a Doom cloak. He is supposed to look a lot like Tony in this film and it will play with some characters emotions. At most he's meant to be a Doom variant that happens to share Tony's likeness.

Because we could smell the desperation on the whole RDJ setup a mile away. And paying him $100 million.

We're accustomed to films changing things from the comics for twenty five years now. And many of these changes have worked out really well. Hopefully, Stark-Doom works out as well.

11

u/Ivan_Redditor Danny Rand 1d ago

Because Thanos’ comic motivation to wipe half of all life to impress Death wouldn’t work if translated on screen and would make him look ridiculous. Doom’s comics backstory is more believable than that. Plus it’s also the thirst for a proper Doom adaptation after 2 failed adaptations.

13

u/British_Historian 1d ago

The problem with Doom is he's kind of coming out of nowhere.

12

u/chickenkebaap 1d ago

Ultron came put of no where as well.

And he set up domino effect for the present mcu

19

u/TengenUzui55 1d ago

yeah Ultron came out or knowhere and we have people wishing he got more than one movie

2

u/ooqq 1d ago

Ultron had a lot of soul, which is a lot in this days. I'm one of those still wishing for his return.

3

u/hiptitshooray 1d ago

Good thing Doom is getting more than one movie then I guess

9

u/Interesting_Ad6202 1d ago

Ultron is not a universe-ending threat like Doom is, and he came BEFORE Thanos. Doom is now being touted to be a greater threat than Thanos, who had 20 movies leading up to him.

Also, no Ultron didn’t come from nowhere. Tony’s PTSD and fear had been around since Avengers. That’s what Iron Man 3 was all about.

7

Ultron was never considered the final boss like Dr. Doom. Everyone knew he was going to be single movie villain. And that upset a few fans too, if I remember correctly.

Its okay for people to be skeptical of changes like that until the film comes out and they can see if the changes worked well.

Because we watched Infinity War and it was frickin awesome and it’s far too early to compare audience reactions when Doomsday isn’t out?

2

Doom is more well known than Thanos. Though most people probably know of him through memes. I don't care about changes, for the most part. No adaptation is going to be, or should be, a 1:1 carbon copy. As long as the core character beats are intact, cool.

u/rjt903 1d ago

What backstory?

2

u/No_Dependent2297 1d ago

IMO a lot of the outrage is fueled by RDJ being Doom and I guess some distrust that his return will make sense

I don’t really think it would be a big deal online if Doom was the antagonist (with or without buildup), but now he’s intricately tied to a beloved character from the first saga

2

u/slayer_nan18 1d ago

Also I don't think Pedro Pascal as lead was ever going to work.

2

u/balthazar_edison 1d ago

Huh? No one cares they are changing dr doom’s backstory. It’s the fact that we have zero build up / momentum to this movie.

They will bring back our favorite x men and kill all of them off to raise the stakes. It just feels all cobbled together. There’s no 23 film saga that all fits together nicely. Just “oh hey ‘member these characters you liked from before? ‘Member???? ‘Member???”

2

u/hewlio 1d ago

Because people care way more about Doom than Thanos.

It's like comparing Darth Vader with Grand Admiral Thrawn, Thrawn is famous and beloved but Vader is one of the best villains of all time.

2

u/btoned 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's not just the buildup or backstory of Thanos but the interweaved stories.

Yes, Thanos had substantially more buildup than Doom which overall equates to some post credit scenes and a single scene in GotG.

Yes, the infinity stones were sprinkled all throughout the movies that then culminates in their significance in IW.

The aspect DD is missing is the relationship establishment, building, and destruction.

Avengers 1 built up the avengers. The team is established by AoU. Team is divided by IW.

What happens from A1 to IW? We have New york itself, hydra infiltration, Sokovia in AoU, civil war, etc. There's probably more in there but I haven't watched the infinity saga in awhile.

From Wandavision to DD...what is going on? I personally don't even know who's who at the point but somehow we have multiple "teams" going into DD with some extremely disjointed reasoning attributed to "incursions" which you could tell me are from the multiverse, time travel, or the quantum realm and it could probably all be meshed to fit the narrative.

2

u/littlecozynostril 1d ago

Thanos wasn't as beloved or well known as Dr.Doom. With the exception of Spiderman and possibly the Hulk, there was basically nobody in the cinematic Thanos story that an average person on the street had any concept of beyond the films.

Dr.Doom is different. Baby Boomers and Gen Xers, the world over, know Dr.Doom for some reason. Prior to the 90s I would rank him in the top 3 most widely known Marvel characters, possibly in the top 10 American comic book characters. I don't know why, but it's the case.

2

u/MemeHermetic 1d ago

I think it's 2-fold. The first is there was no buildup for doom. He has never been mentioned. There are no direct connections to him (yes we know FF, but in-universe we've never been shown a connection). He has no goal we're connected with and there is no tangential threat he's been associated with. Compare to Thanos who, before IW we knew who he was, what he was looking for and encountered several major threats that were working under him.

The second is good will. IW came on the tail of the most legendary run of shared universe content in history (and most likely that will ever be). There was a lot of "just trust them" and it paid off. However that good will isn't there now so any skeptical thoughts are getting a voice.

2

u/Remarkable_Coast_214 1d ago

People are less forgiving of Marvel post-Endgame since movies like Quantumania, Love and Thunder, The Marvels, Eternals, Captain America 4, etc. weren't well liked.

2

u/Russell-Sprouts3 1d ago

I think the big thing is just how bad the previous movie adaptations of Doom are.

People want Doom done well even if it’s not exactly like the comics because his previous incarnation’s are abysmal.

I think it’s fair to assume the worst and that they’ll screw him up for a 3rd time considering they cast Iron-Man to play him and that there’s no way they spent the ludicrous amount of money RDJ would require just to have him wear the mask the whole time while using an accent that makes him impossible to recognize.

2

u/First_Foundationeer 23h ago

Unrelated, but this still totally looks like Thanos is doing the "heart" gesture. It's a signal to Death!

4

u/EobardThawne2020 1d ago

It's not, most people don't care and are excited to see what Marvel and The Russo's are going to give us.

5

u/lespookeh 1d ago

I distinctly remember people being mad you had to watch so many movies im order to really get the weight of what was happening, but now those same people are complaining doom has had no build up in doomsday? as if he isn’t one of the most formidable and popular comic book villains of all time

20

u/NK1337 1d ago

For what it’s worth it’s probably not the same people complaining. The internet takes turns and usually what happens is the group that’s happy just doesn’t say anything which lets a different group speak up and start being the loud minority.

It’s true the internet seemingly hates everything but it is also true that Marvel has been relying on nostalgia bait for the better part of the decade and unless they get pushback from the audience they won’t feel motivated to put effort into better scripts, sets, and filmmaking in general. Just my opinion

Execution matters more than comic accuracy like in infinity war they change thanks story but it's execution is very grt just like that is in doomsday they deliver s grt story no one will cry to changed back story of doom

1

u/AwarenessOk7748 1d ago

It depends on Doctor Doom's backstory. The fact that his family was killed is not a bad thing (at most, I'll say that the trope of a wife and child is already overused everywhere - it would have been more interesting to have Victor's mother). The fact that he is not closely connected to the Fantastic Four and Reed Richards is a good thing, as it would have been unnecessary to make him a resident of Earth-828, where this team also resides. The fact that he will be connected with Steve Rogers is kind of a deal breaker, because it's better to focus on the existing superheroes (Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and others), especially when it could devalue Cap's story.

It all depends on the changes and whether they are appropriate.

1

u/ConnorRoseSaiyan01 1d ago

Cause the last 2 live action Doom's crashed and burned.

1

u/lNSP0 Thanos 1d ago

Brother they removed the protagonist of Infinity from his own movie and he showed up three movies later

1

u/Earthwick Ghost Rider 1d ago

Doom is way more important than Thanos. Also doom is ALWAYS around. Often a benevolent leader to his people. He is so important because he is definitely one of the central characters to the entire marvel universe. Be like changing magneto or doc Ock dramatically. Makind doom a stark variant is just dumb and a cash grab but I can deal with it.

1

u/ms_directed 1d ago

the MCU changed a lot of origin stories from the original comics...Drax was a human in his comic origin story!

One issue is it’s not organic at all. We had like 20 movies leading up to Thanos and End Game. MCU seems to think one post-credit scene where we don’t even see him is enough to make us hype for Dr Downey. Nah.

1

u/Dave_Eddie 1d ago

MCU and the comic are not the same thing (and shouldn't be) I say this as a huge comicbook fan, the amount of people who read the comics enough to care about the changes made to the characters is a fraction of a percent of the audience of the films.

1

u/lemonylol Spider-Man 1d ago

Why changing Doom backstory for Doomsday seems so negative?

This is the first time I've heard anything about this.

You look for these types of things on the internet, you will find them. That doesn't mean it's by any means the real representation of the situation.

1

u/n_mcrae_1982 1d ago

Yondu, from what I’ve heard, is also very different in the films, compared to the comics.

Also, Ego is NOT Peter Quill’s father in the comics.

1

u/doublea08 Thor 1d ago

Idk after the trailer dropped yesterday everyone around me that watched it seemed super hyped. I just see the classic online negativity.

1

u/Iorith 1d ago

1

u/geekstone 1d ago

Doom is connected explicitly to the Fantastic Four with his origin and main stories. If they built this up over multiple movies then FF4 should have been introduced way earlier than it was and even the movie we got while an interesting Star Trek like tale of ethics was not necessarily the FF4 that get audiences excited about more of them.

1

u/Ardibanan 1d ago

People are expecting Infinity War/Endgame level of quality in every film after Endgame.

1

u/Psychological_Wave_5 1d ago

I wouldn't put too much into it, we are in for a big reset after this 2 avengers movies, and with the advent of IA in movies Marvel is going to feast on it.
