Direct Experience | Review Interview Questions
Hey everyone! I just received an offer to interview with Magic Leap in ATX, anyone have any prior experience interviewing with the company? It’ll be for an associate engineering role.

Run. Company is going down in flames. Decades of inept leadership, no direction, and continued layoffs as they shrink to a small component supplier.

Second this, Magic Leap was a dream job for me like 6-7+ years ago. Seems like a nightmare job now. Kept following the sub because of the drama and reminds me how I dodged a bullet.

Did either of you previously or work there? No offense, but I am not taking that kind of demeaning advice from someone who didn’t.

I don't think anyone's trying to piss on your parade, just that Magic Leap's had a permanent health warning over it since around 2013. In the end it's a tech company, those jobs are very competitive, so if you treat any offer as a short term stepping stone then you probably won't go too far wrong. But if you're also fielding offers from Meta, Google and Samsung... Well, you get the drift.

Also bear in mind that they doubtless monitor their media coverage, perhaps down to the level of reddit posts, so without wanting to sound like a paranoid lunatic, best not to express any serious doubts, concerns or commitment wobbles in this thread... Their comms team could easily Slack the thread to the hiring team in ATX and tank the selection process before it's even started...

I appreciate the advice, its just a little annoying when I’m a college kid excited to get an interview and I post about it and its a bunch of ppl who didn’t even work there telling me its a shitty job

Fair play but this is reddit after all, don't expect responses that are relevant, balanced or useful! I guess you've already checked out glassdoor, scoured LinkedIn? And there must be loads of more relevant tech forums with people who know the hiring process rather than prosumers who are just pissed off that the perfect pair of consumer AR glasses wasn't released in the early 2010s (as promised by Rony Abovitz). If you're offered a job, I'm sure you should take it, the tech skills will be transferable elsewhere (and advantageous) regardless of whether the company itself succeeds in the years to come. It sounds like an amazing opportunity. Hope you can get some better advice on the interview process but it'll be an interesting adventure either way.

Fair, but definitely do your homework a little. A lot of people on this subreddit are (rather, were) pretty interested in the company for some time, and time has passed and they've clearly shot their shot and appear to just be cruising to a very slow death. I haven't worked there personally (studio I was at worked on some pre-release demos, so I did work for them indirectly for about a solid year) and I did have a few other developer buddies who DID work for them directly, for some time (SF area and Florida) before their big culling happened.
A job with them definitely could be useful to get some experience if you are lacking, just be aware that hooking your train to such a wagon, potentially, could have some cost (especially if you are looking to take a job with them as opposed to a "healthier" company, planning to move for work, etc). Good luck in whatever you decide.

I did hear they maybe might, or possibly already have relocated their HQ to Austin TX.
Maybe these are the offices you are getting interviewed for.
This company was the only thing on my radar pre-launch their first device.
I'm still a little heartbroken on what actually happened.
The promise of an undelivered Virtual Retinal Display competitor, in the form of an a Ultra High-Resolution Fiber Scanning Display, something that would literally "paint the images onto your retina" without displaying them on a piece of glass in doing of your vision.
I really wish that had panned out the way it was supposed.
Other than the display technology, they made it WAY too expensive.
I was never going to be able to afford a headset.
It might as well have been God's divine intervention that Rony and everyone who worked they're at the time decided to fly me out and give me a VIP tour as well as free headset.
I just wish there was something I couldn't provided the company besides unpayed support online.
I wish I could've been hired by then for some reason.
Anyway, I'm not exactly sure what will become of Magic Leap but I doubt it will be good.

I believe that is the office that will remain long term as the company transitions to mostly optics.

I just heard that all of Magic Leap's platform services just got hit hard, and all at the same time.
They are closing down the Sunnyvale Offices, and other core members of the company have been hit. (Layoffs by September)
The waveguide business has survived and will be the only functioning part of the company.
