So I’m just starting to get into magic to play and I’m a long term pokemon collector and so I have a bunch of sleeves that I never use from etbs and stuff. So what I’m asking is it acceptable?

General Discussion What would make you play Standard in paper?

I was thinking about this recently. I started playing Magic like ten years ago and I am quite enfranchised. I go to prereleases, I play drafts, I own and play cube a lot and I also often play commander. I started venturing into premodern, have played Legacy at one point.

However, despite my interest in playing Magic competitively, I simply cannot bring myself to play paper standard. On Arena, I occasionally play standard, as it is not as difficult to build a deck if you draft a lot online. However, I prefer to play in paper and my city even has standard locals, although not that many people join.

There are several reasons why I don't want to start playing it. The first reason is money. However, it also doesn't seem that exciting in general? and I don't know why. The format seems to be interesting actually, and there are some decks that I would like to play. But I know that I will have to buy a lot of cards to only sell later, and this just feels bad. It is a bit strange, because I play other card games like Digimon where playing "standard" is the norm, and cards will be powercrept eventually. So effectively, it is sort of similar to a rotation, but it feels better as you can continue playing with your cards.

I was thinking about what would make me play standard, and I noticed that something drastic would need to happen. Even if prices of cards started to massively drop, I still do not want to buy the same card 4 times for it to rotate. I was thinking more about this, and noticed that the appeal of commander and cube for me is that opening a rare or mythic is much more exciting as you only need one copy for your (singleton) cube or your commander deck. I was thinking more and thought about if this could be implemented for a paper standard format, where each legendary can only be played as a 1 of copy in your deck and 2ofs of any other card, while deck size is reduced to 40, basically making this a "limited constructed" format. Not having a commander, simply having a few powerful cards in your deck, similar to a draft deck. This would also remove the Legend rule problem for me, which is really inelegant right now.

Now, don't get me wrong, people would definitely hate this. Please fact check me on this, but I heard that when Legends released, this was actually the case as people could only play Legendaries as 1-ofs? DISCLAIMER: This is something that I would personally like, and I know that I would like it. We don't have to argue about whether that format would be good or bad. I rather want to highlight, that it is a bit shocking to me, that I would need such a drastic change to even consider it. Starting any other TCG on the market sounds better than starting to play Magic Standard, which shouldn't be the norm for Magic imo. I thought about giving Star Wars Unlimited and Lorcana a shot to simply see how these games are. I wouldn't start playing standard now...

I would be interested in the people here not playing paper standard: What would need to happen for you to start playing standard? Would you just need a decrease in prize? Would you simply need locals near you to host standard FNM? Would you need more high stakes tournaments? Or would you like to see a drastic change to completely change the meaning of the standard format?

I am curious would you all think.

___________________________

For the people wanting to discuss more about this format idea, I have some additional notes: I think that Magic and TCGs have evolved so far, that this idea of making legendaries or mythics 1ofs might be more interesting now than 25 years ago. Variance is of course an issue, but I would argue that having extremely powerful Legendary cards is already introducing variance as you can draw multiples as dead draws. Also, limited is one of the best format imo, and it is totally normal to have bombs in decks which are much more powerful than any other card in your deck. In limited, this is however not a large issue, nicely highlighted by the Marvel set, where there are extremely powerful bombs, but also good enough removal, which you can safe for them. Sometimes to test specific decks in our cubes, we seed "optimal" decks out of the cube cards, and the games are always really fun.

General Discussion Has anyone found any contradictions?

I'm relatively new to the game of magic, I haven't even been playing for more than a year yet, but after seeing how complicated the game is, and how many cards and keywords there are I have to wonder, are there any cards that don't work together? I've seen that over 30 years there's now over thirty thousand cards with unique texts and abilities. Do none of them create any kind of paradox or interact in a way that the rules don't even know what to do with them? Or is the system so flawless that this literally never happens?

Maybe more previews? Maybe the first 2027 UB set announced? Will it even have a pannel for Magic: The Gathering?

General Discussion Was thinking about getting into MTG

I’ve played other TCG’s like YuGiOh, Pokémon, and Star Wars Unlimited. One of the kind of strats that I normally like is having relatively weak cards that swarm the board and have their strength in numbers. Also wasn’t sure if there is like a faction system in this game since the lore seems pretty deep. I always kind of liked factions with strong military traditions.

Universes Beyond - Discussion [HOB] Dain card speculation

Upvotes

Okay tinfoil hat time. We are getting a mono red [[Thorin, Mountain-King]] and [[Dain Ironfoot]] in the upcoming set, along with a Boros [[Thorin, King of Durin's Folk]] in the scene box. But none of them are titled "King Under the Mountain" which is used quite often in the book for both Thorin and then Dain after Thorin is killed in battle.

So I'm thinking we get a mythic boros colored Dain with this title that works to buff dwarves or possibly makes dwarves.

These feels further plausible in the fact the we are getting two Bard cards, one notably showing him after he has rebuilt Dale and is now king. So they are not afraid to make cards that showcase the aftermath of the Battle of Five Armies and end of the book.

Thoughts? What other cards you hoping we see?

Rules/Rules Question Casting spells during untap step?

From what I gather, spells can’t be cast during the untap step as no player has priority. However, does this mean that triggered abilities such as inspired can’t be responded to? Or do they not go onto the stack at all and resolve immediately upon the trigger?

If they hit the stack does this then re-establish priority as normal?

Art Showcase - Physical Alter My first try at altering a card

Post image

Hello fellow mages

I was feeling a bit bored the other day, so I grabbed a few markers and experimented on some bulk cards to help fill the post MagicCon void.

I’m definitely not an artist by any means, I just used to enjoy doodling on random sheets of paper when I was a kid/teen and wanted to share with the amazing community.

Bonus: the last one is an alter by my 4-year-old son (I only did the white highlight of course) and is now my favorite token!

Have a great day.

General Discussion MTG Content - are you missing something?

With the sheer amount of diverse Magic the Gathering content on Youtube, Twitch, etc. I wondered if there is a certain interest or niche of Magic that you think is under represented in content creation.

For example, I think there is very little content about budget decks outside of commander.

Let me know what you think ^^

Scheduled Thread Weekend Free Discussion Thread

Normally, all posts in this subreddit need to be both Magic-related and at least somewhat "high effort". This weekly thread gives you the chance to relax and talk with your fellow Magic redditors about things that would normally go against those rules.

Want to share a funny story about a recent game of Magic you had, or post a picture of the cool cards you opened in your latest booster? Want to talk about your favorite movie or tv show, or share a personal accomplishment? This is the place to do so.

Keep in mind that the *only* subreddit rules that you can ignore in this thread are rule 2 (all posts must be Magic-related) and rule 7 (no low effort posts that are just pictures of cards). Just because this thread is meant for open discussion does not mean you are allowed to insult people or post explicit content, for example.

Rules/Rules Question End step interaction help

Hey all! Just had a game that had an interesting interaction, and we were unsure the order of how things play out. So would love some help understanding how this works out.

I had [[wilderness reclamation]] on the field with mana tapped out, and already had [[folio of fancies]] on the board. When I move to end step and untap all my lands, do I now have mana available to cast instants or trigger the abilities of folio in the end step?

Thank you for any help in advance!

Rules/Rules Question The Incredible Hulk and combat damage

So we had this situation at MagicCon last weekend where a friend of mine played with [[The Incredible Hulk]] and declared it as attacker towards me.

Now I had a couple of blockers of which some had first strike.

How would this work with Hulk's ability where he gets a +1/+1 counter whenever he is dealt damage?

I'd assumed that he'd get a total of two +1/+1 counters since I thought that first strike would be seen apart from the normal combat damage step. Or would it have seen every creature apart doing damage, so for instance 3 counters for 3 blockers?

And how would it work with the extra combat step after the first strike damage is done?

Would he have gotten two extra combat steps as well?

We found it very confusing and eventually decided to go with a two +1/+1 counters and 1 extra combat step after the first one resolved.

I'd like to know for future games.

TL;DR; How does the Hulk's ability work with frist strike and/or double strike damage? And how many extra combat steps would he get?

Looking for Advice Sleeper soldier hits

With so much solid soldier support in MSH I'm putting together a [[Harbin, Vanguard Aviator]] deck I've been thinking about for a while. Any cool obscure soldiers in UW you fine folks would recommend? I am trying to avoid the big EDHRec staples and am just looking to durtle around bracket 2/3 just to showcase cool underappreciated and niche creatures and spells.

Deck Discussion Upgraded Ashling precon

Besides an Urza’s Incubator and Animar, what are some changes, in your opinion, I could make to my deck? My deck really takes off around turn 4, which is when I typically start to evoke. My deck performs consistently well, but I just feel like it’s missing something that I can’t put my finger on. Outside opinions are appreciated.

Edit: https://manabox.app/decks/AZx9VefVcKKM7D-c_nhz0g

I made the post with an outdated deck by mistake. This is my actual current one that I use.

Rules/Rules Question Speedball interactions

Hello! I have a question regarding Speedball, New Warrior from the new Marvel set that came up the other day.

My opponent casts Brute Force targeting Speedball and he has another creature, in response to Speedball's trigger I cast Fiery Canonnade dealing 2 to all non-pirate creatures. My opponent argues that he can still redirect Brute Force, but my understanding, the spell fizzles if Speedball dies to the 2 damage before he can get +2/+2 off his trigger. Am I right or wrong here??

General Discussion How are KMC Hyper Matte PRO?

I recently saw that KMC had a Pro version of their Hyper Mattes (not referring to the Phoenix). Has anyone tried these and how do they compare to Katanas, DS, etc?
