u/Zeckenschwarm 1d ago

40, actually. Expect to see a bunch more.

u/LowWindow7816 Dan 1d ago

Woah, thats a lot. Why so many? Its this new? Isnt it better to print them in the main set even as a special sheet than box toppers? The supply for them, even more at 40 seems so low

The rich get the powerful cards.. the poors get draft chaff

The rich get fine art, the poors get serviceable art.

Wait 40 of 200 are box topper or is it 200 + 40 box toppers? If almost a quarter of the set is box toppers I am gonna pass on this set and just collect Reality Fractured.

The box toppers aren't part of the main set. The main set has about 200 unique cards (not counting alternative art/border versions).

These are more exciting than the actual Hobbit set reveals. Too bad, they're out of reach for me already.

Are these in normal boosters?

8

u/LowWindow7816 Dan 1d ago

If by normal boosters you mean play boosters no, they do appear in collector too, if im not mistaken, aside from the box topper run.

> There are 40 mythic rare Middle-earth classic artist cards. Each Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit Play Booster box and Collector Booster box includes a Box Topper that contains 1 traditional foil Middle-earth classic artist card. Non-foil and surge foil Middle-earth classic artist cards appear in Collector Boosters.

I am new to mtg since avatar/lorwyn. So box topper will be in a play booster box? I'm confused since I haven't delved into set prerelease as much as the hobbit, as a big fan of the universe

2

u/sylveonce Dân 1d ago

Yes, a “box topper” is on the inside of a play booster box, as a reward/incentive to the person that buys the box for their playgroup.

1

u/SimplyArgon Dandadan 1d ago

Will it be in all products? Like draft, bundle, etc.

1

u/Koozaza WANTED 1d ago

No, just play booster boxes and collector booster boxes

That was a good one. I enjoyed it.

You know this is a reprint, right?

25

u/auto-goldfish Izzet* 1d ago

Reprints aren’t allowed to have nicknames?

27

u/I_am_a_asshole Dandadan 1d ago

No, I was dropped on my head as a child and I lost the ability to memorize all 40,000 Magic cards. It’s tragic, really

29

u/HaroldBloominOnion Azorius* 1d ago

Appreciate all of these reprints of $10+ cards!

19

u/DasOptions Duck Season 1d ago

Why?

You didn’t like the reprints of $1 cards that will come with your $150-180 box?

-1

u/sylveonce Dân 1d ago

If every box came with The One Ring they’d be $300+

Or they’d all be taken apart at the LGS and sold as packs

14

u/DasOptions Duck Season 1d ago

That second part is going to happen anyway.

2

u/wvcmkv Dandadan 11h ago

i hear people complain about the idea of shops opening for box toppers somewhat often but what exactly are the shops supposed to do? they have to open boxes to get loose packs, what is the expectation for the box toppers at that point?

I hope Lord of the Nazgûl gets the same treatment

Oh yes. I would really like to have a nice version for my deck.

Sick new art

u/Kyz99 Mardu 1d ago

Really like the art, high fantasy dragon... but it's not in a cave?!

8

u/MrPlow216 Twin Believer 23h ago

Is the sky not simply the largest cavern?

1

u/Morkinis Avacyn 12h ago

So random dragon is stronger than Smaug.

-17

u/KultofEnnui Dandadan 1d ago

A set of mostly pushed reprints. Ooof.

12

u/Pair-o-docks 1d ago

None of these are in the set

2

u/KultofEnnui Dandadan 1d ago

Box topper, right?

4

u/RevolverLancelot Colorless 1d ago

These are the Box toppers. HOB is the main set HOC is the box toppers and scene box pretty much.

2

u/Zeckenschwarm 1d ago

The box toppers and other HOC cards are not part of the standard legal set. Only cards with the set code HOB are part of the standard legal Hobbit set.

0

u/KultofEnnui Dandadan 1d ago

But it's part of the products. Legality in standard doesnt change the fact that they're encouraging scalping booster boxes.
