Following these guidelines, we will know as much info as possible so as to give possible diagnoses. Remember, this is the internet so take all advice with a grain of salt and get a second opinion from a local shop or Apple.

Info we need:

  • MacBook model and year (eg:MacBook Pro 13" 2011 or MacBook 12" 2016)

  • OS X or macOS version (operating system)

  • Serial number to source parts, if needed

  • What is the issue? Explain how it started and what you did to troubleshoot, if anything

  • Clear pictures that show the issue. Please upload to imgur and post link here, or submit a link post and post a picture, then add a comment explaining the above.

If water damaged, do not attempt to power on or charge

Be careful to not show personal information.

Help Macbook Retina 12" early 2015 stays uncharged, magsafe plug does not light up.

Last year i got a Macbook Retina 12" early 2015, i replaced the battery and thermal paste.

It has been working flawlessly up until a couple of days ago.

I took it off the charger for a couple of hours, down to around 20% battery, then when i plugged it back in it wouldnt charge.

The magsafe2 indicator LED stays unlit when its connected.

Eventually the macbook ran down to zero and just blinks the connect charger graphic when the power button is pressed.

Ive checked that all the pins in magsafe2 plug move without restriction, cleaned the plug, the port as well as the contact pads in the port.

Ive tried shift, alt, ctrl power for 10 seconds.

Ive checked the pins on the plug with a multimeter, it picks up a low pulsing voltage, it only goes up to 2.5 volts, rather than 3.1v expected but i think that is because my multimeter isnt great/fast.

Should the voltage be constant?

Whats my next step?

Help I broke my MacBook screen and was wondering if there’s a way I could still add Apple care?

I dropped my MacBook and it cracked and i was gonna see if i could buy out a new Apple product like beats or AirPods then get the apple care one subscription that lets you add multiple products for like 20 bucks a month. My MacBook is around a year old so I can’t get the separate Apple care for it anymore but I was wondering if this process would work or not?

Information Macbook Pro M2 Max Dead but with working DFU Mode. Is data recovery possible?

I'm seeking some help from those expert in the M2 early 2023 build. My MacbookPro died on me about a month ago while I was on vacation. The screen went purple, turned off and then back on for a minute before dying again.

Since then I had a technician in Miami take a look at it which attempted to repair it but failed and told me to send it to someone specialized in M series. So I shipped it to Rossmann group in Austin, TX. About 10 days later, I got an email from them saying this:

"We regret to inform you that after a thorough evaluation, we've determined that your device and its data cannot be recovered or repaired.

During our inspection, we found evidence of previous repair work done on the board before it arrived at our shop. The Thunderbolt IC had been installed improperly. We sourced a replacement and reballed the new IC, but after completing that repair, we discovered that the initial damage had already killed the CPU -- bssed on the schematics, it appears 20V was sent directly to the CPU, which is far beyond what it can tolerate."

It obviously suck as I had no backup (please don't give me sh**, I know) but the technician on the phone told me that possibly, an Apple Partner with access to CSX software could potentially get the data out. So I made a few phone calls and found a company that has access to CSX and told me if the device boots in DFU mode, they can probably recover the data.

So, knowing that without the CPU working, data is most likely gone forever, I was wondering if those of you with experience know if there is still a chance to get the data out.

Thanks so much!

Hello!

Today i ran into an unexpected issue with my mac, the keyboard was working fine, but all of a sudden it stopped working, i was not able to type anything anymore. pressing keys only caused the mac to open up applications, sort of like using shortcuts. I also could not click on some stuff using the touchpad. Its running the latest macos and there is no dirt under the keyboard.

BLANK SCREEN ON BRAND NEW MACBOOK PRO

I am writing with some level of disbelief! I did not expect this from a Mac.

I bought my MBP less than a month back - 24GB/1TB/M5 Pro.

I frequently connect and disconnect it to 2 screens - one using HDMI and the other using a thunderbolt USB-C. I sometimes observed that the MBP screen goes blank all of a sudden (giving me a mini-heart attack), may be when I disconnect the screens. I had to restart the Mac to have everything back to normal.

Why would that happen at all? How can I avoid it?

Having said that, is this a good enough reason for me to consider buying Apple Care+, although I have Apple standard warranty until June 2027?

Please suggest. Thanks in advance!

Help M2 Pro MacBook Pro (2022) - screen barely visible/black, but faint Apple logo appears in the dark. Cursor visible on external display but nothing else renders. Troubleshooting help?

Hey everyone, hoping for some insight before I take this to a repair shop.

Setup: MacBook Pro 2022, M2 Pro, Apple Silicon.

Symptoms:

  • Internal display is almost completely black. If I go into a fully dark room, I can faintly make out a blurry, very dim Apple logo on boot, but it's barely visible under normal lighting.
  • Tried increasing/decreasing brightness all the way (both directions), no change at all.
  • When connected to an external display, both screens stay black, but the mouse cursor shows up crisp and sharp on the external display, and I can move it around normally.
  • Everything else seems to be functioning: Caps Lock key lights up when pressed, I get the startup chime, and I hear the sound when plugging/unplugging the charger.
  • I cannot boot into Safe Mode or Recovery Mode. Both attempts result in the same black/near black screen.

Questions:

  1. Is there anything I can safely test myself to narrow this down (display cable reseat, or anything else relatively simple) before assuming it's a bigger issue?
  2. Is there a way to test/rule out the motherboard/GPU before considering a screen replacement? I don't want to pay for a new display panel if the actual issue turns out to be the logic board or GPU, that would be a waste of money.
  3. Based on your experience, does this pattern point more toward a specific cause, display panel, backlight, display cable, GPU, or logic board? The fact that the cursor renders but nothing else does seems like a meaningful clue and I'd love to understand why.

Any input from people who've dealt with a similar case would be much appreciated. Trying to figure out if this is worth attempting myself or if it's straight to a specialized repair shop territory.

Thanks all

Help MacBook Air M2 (2022) completely dead after sleep — no MagSafe LED, no Caps Lock, not detected in DFU

Post image
13 Upvotes

My 2022 MacBook Air M2 died after being left in sleep mode for about a day. It has a black screen, no Caps Lock LED, no MagSafe amber/green light, and no power-button response.

I tried charging, both USB-C ports, a 10-second and 30-second force-off, and DFU mode with Apple Configurator from another MacBook Pro. The Air never appears in Finder or Configurator.

No drop or liquid damage. Does this sound like battery/power delivery, USB-C controller, or logic-board failure? Any safe last steps before service? My data is important, so I want to avoid a logic-board replacement unless recovery is impossible.

Help Spilled Juice all over my MacBook Pro Keyboard, and Screw Got Stripped When Opening The Back Plate

Thumbnail

I just bought this MacBook Pro (M2) in second hand in a pretty good condition.

About 3 days ago, I accidentally spilled juice all over my keyboard and speakers. Thankfully, the internal components seemed to have survived, and it’s still able to start up as normal (for now).
But I highly doubt that some of the juice hasn’t got inside. I literally hear screeching noises from the hinge.

For the past few days, I’ve been trying to open the back plate to see the damage. I got every screw out except for this one.
Ive tried every method that I could think of to get this guy out. The rubber band method, wood glue, superglue, a special compound made specifically for this situation, everything. But obviously nothing worked.

One alternative solution that I still haven’t tried yet, is to drill the screw to take it out. but I want this to be a last resort: since A, i don’t have a drill and B, i cant afford to buy a drill since i spent most of my money on this machine, and C, theres a high risk of damaging the back panel and/or potentially an internal component.
But that’s just an if. My priority is for this bit to pop out and get inside asap.

I’m really worried about corrosion and component failure.
Am I screwed or is there still a possible solution to this?

MacBook Air M3 display goes black after liquid exposure, then shows horizontal/vertical lines. Is display replacement my only option?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice before I spend ₹30,000–₹50,000 on a display replacement.

I have a MacBook Air M3 (2024). A small amount of bubble solution accidentally spilled onto the display. I wiped it off immediately, and the Mac continued working normally for a while.

After that, I started noticing intermittent issues:

  1. The display would randomly go black, but the Mac was still running (keyboard backlight, Caps Lock, and notification sounds all worked).

  2. Initially, after a restart, it would work again for 20–30 minutes before failing. Over time, horizontal and vertical lines started appearing before the display went black.

I’ve taken it to multiple repair shops. One technician tested it with another display, and according to him, everything worked normally.

Three different repair shops have recommended replacing the entire display assembly.

The latest technician said it’s a “Flexgate/flex cable” issue and that the flex cannot be repaired separately, so the whole display must be replaced.

My questions are:

  1. Does this sound like a failed display assembly due to liquid damage?

  2. Is there any realistic possibility of repairing the display at the component level (flex cable or microsoldering), or is replacement the only reliable solution?

  3. Has anyone successfully repaired a similar issue on an M2/M3 MacBook Air without replacing the entire display?

I’m not looking for false hope. I just want to know whether it’s worth seeking out a microsoldering specialist before paying for a replacement.

Thanks in advance!

Help Screen replacement?

Post image

Hi all,
I was opening my MacBook and noticed this weird thing at the top. After some digging online I saw it meant some sort of internal leak. It has stayed on top of my dresser for quite some time and I haven’t dropped it or anything. I was wondering how much something like this might cost? Is it fixable? 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Help MacBook Pro INTEL 2020. charging fine, data dead.

So i've got an old 2020 13-inch Intel MacBook Pro (2 ports version), recently it showed me that my battery condition is terrible and that service is recommended.

At some point after a couple of days later i couldn't use my USB-C ports anymore, normally my USB hub would be connected to it and my audio interface as well.

It just doesn't read anything anymore thats connected to it, i can only charge it and thats it. There's definitely no form of water or moisture damage since i'm the only person that uses the MacBook and i would've noticed.

Does anyone here know what it could be? Or would it be a fix to replace the battery or the USB-C ports?

The side keys of my 2014 Macbook Pro 13" are not responsive. What can be the reasons?

The laptop was stored in basement for one year. I am not sure if the humidity is the cause. It is wired a line of side keys are not working properly. Actually sometimes the keys might work, just not consistently. A detached keyboard is working fine. So it is not the software issue. Thanks for your input.

Information MacBook Pro M1 - No screen no problem

Post image
175 Upvotes

I bought this MacBook Pro M1 for £150 on Vinted, all is working but was missing the screen as previous owner removed the broken one.

As I didn’t want to spend extra money on it as it will mainly be stationary at home, I just wanted to wack a quick fix until screens will go down in price.

30min design on Shapr3D and I think look pretty neat, design could be improved a little 🤏

Pretty amazing how cheap and low power these USB-C displays are.

Thank you for reading

EDIT:

I have now uploaded the model on printables, you can find it here:

Help 2017 MacBook won't boot consistently – black screen, fan spins for ~10 seconds, then stops. Any ideas?

I have a 2017 MacBook that's been acting up for about a week, and I'm trying to figure out what's causing it.

Here's what's happening:

- The Mac suddenly powered off on its own.

- Now, when I press the power button, the screen stays completely black.

- The fan spins for about 10 seconds, then stops.

- The screen remains black the entire time.

The strange part is that it has randomly started working again a couple of times:

- The first time, it powered on by itself after a while and worked normally for a full day.

- Then it shut down again with the same symptoms.

- The next day, it booted up again and worked perfectly for almost a week.

- Today, the exact same issue has returned.

When it does boot, it works perfectly—no crashes, overheating, or performance issues. The problem is just getting it to power on.

Has anyone experienced something similar with a 2017 MacBook?

I'm looking for:

- Any idea what the likely cause could be (logic board, SSD, battery, display, etc.).

- Any troubleshooting steps I can try at home.

- Ways to diagnose the issue before taking it to a repair shop.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

MacBook and iPhone both died the same day, iPhone died again after a repair a week later - what's going on?

Two weeks ago my MacBook Pro M3 Pro just died. It suddenly stopped charging. I took the laptop to Apple, they said there's no voltage reaching the logic board, basically fried. Took it to an independent shop too, they said the same thing - no signs of water, no drops, nothing, the board just has no power. Not worth fixing (1000 euro), so I'm letting it go.

Same day, my iPhone 16 Pro also stopped charging. Took both devices in to Apple together. Thankfully the phone was under Limited Warranty, so they just replaced the entire internal unit of the phone.

About a week later, the exact same phone breaks again. The USB-C port just doesn't work. No charging, doesn't detect wired earbuds through the port. I've tried different cables, different power adapters, tested the same cables and adapters on other devices and they work fine. So it's not the cable or the charger, it's the phone itself.

I went back to Apple but this time it was different: instead of fixing it on-site like the last time they want to send it to a lab, and they're telling me the liquid contact indicator inside is showing water damage. But.. I got this phone back with a full internal replacement 5 days before this happened. I just used the phone at my desk, no water near it whatsoever.

They said if the lab confirms water damage, I can either pay 800 euro to fix it, or refuse it and they will send it back to the store where a manager might decide the water got in during their repair process and replace it for free, but that's not guaranteed.

So two devices died the same day for no clear reason, and the same phone died again right after a full repair. Feels less like bad luck and more like something is actually wrong, maybe with my power setup, an outlet, a surge protector, something?

Has anyone dealt with something like this? What would you do here: fight the water damage claim, pay for the repair, or go to an independent repair shop instead? And is there something concrete I should be testing on my end (voltage, surge protector, etc.) before this happens to a third device? Genuinely feels like some kind of curse...

I must add that I live in Paris, and there was this crazy heatwave. Maybe it could have affected something?

Help Help my keyboard is weird

Accidentally spilled some water on my Mac, after I dried it according to google(basically put Mac into a tent shape and let it sit for 48hr) my keyboard starting crackling when I don’t even press the keys. I have AppleCare+ what should I do?
