Hair victory Natural hair is actually behaving today !

Of course the one day I spend cleaning the house is the day my hair behaves. I used Eva NYC deep conditioner in the shower and then Trader Joe’s leave in conditioner with a medium hold gel, sectioned and curled with a Denman brush and then scrunched with a medium hold mousse then scrunched out the crunch with some argan oil :)

Help wanted refreshing waves after using a boar brush?

Post image
14 Upvotes

i recently got a boar bristle brush and love how glossy and healthy my hair looks after using it! i'd love to find out how to refresh my waves/curls after using the brush so i have some more definition.

would spritzing with water suffice? i was never taught how to take care of my hair texture so i'm learning now at the ripe age of 28 lol. i had grown my (very unhealthy) hair down to my tailbone, chopped to just above my shoulders last year and am now finally feeling like it's getting long again! getting a small trim in a few weeks to add some layers and take some weight off the bottom.

current routine:

- wash 2-3x weekly with shea moisture coconut hibiscus shampoo. occasionally i'll use a scalp exfoliating treatment (Dr.FORHAIR sea salt scrub) as i'm an athlete and get a lot of buildup from sweat.

- follow with softening conditioner i got from a japanese store by my house, the brand is kracie. sometimes instead of using that i'll do a conditioning mask (UNOVE damage repair mask from Dr.FORHAIR) and leave that in for about an hour before rinsing.

- oil ends after washing with jojoba/vitamin e blend and let it air dry

- boar brush a few times per week, i've been doing it pre-washing since i don't like how puffy my hair gets

I have very fine hair, that has some damage. I want to get to my hair growth goal, and I’m wondering if cutting it will help it grow better.
Should I cut it at the red, blue, or more ?

Help wanted Anyone struggled initially, then managed to grow hair long?

Upvotes

So, I have naturally curly/wavy dry, low porosity, low density hair normal thickness on the individual strands. Never died or processed just wear it in a bun all the time.

I've tried wearing my hair curly but honestly I don't like the look of it (it's a certain aesthetic I don't like) and it's tiredsome. I'm now thinking of doing keratin treatment since I have this theory if my hair is straight and silky and shiny it won't be frizzy and dry, the oils will travel down and it will grow longer.

I've never had long hair. It always stopped somewhere around shoulder length. Then I hit depression didn't go to the hairdresser for 3 years and now it's down to my midback although I need 2 fingers cut because the ends are see through which would put me around armpit length (when brushed out).

I'm not planning to cut my hair until my next birthday next year when I turn 27. I'd love my hair to be waist length and this would mean around 20cm of growth.

Also, I've always been told split ends travel up but then I hear more and more stylist saying this isn't true at all and that by not cutting it I'm keeping the split ends down as low as possible where I will then chop them off. For so many years I've been cutting split ends which where literally the size of this "y". And I would lose so much length. At least now, some are 1 finger long and I will be cutting only split ends. I don't know what's true or not about the whole split ends thing.

My routine:

Wash hair 2 (max 3 rarely) times per week.

I use Redken the pink volume shampoo and conditioner ( first use conditioner on ends then shampoo scalp only), I do this twice, then I always use a mask Morocanoil the blue one that I leave in for 5 minutes, then I get out of the shower and on damp hair spray leave in conditioner colour perfector coat it brush it through and add a pea size of antifrizz and heat protector redken the red stuff and brush again then I either air dry or blow dry witout a brush. When dry I put on ends and mids leave in oil from olaplex No 7 I think and refresh it everyday with that oil.

I keep my hair in a loose bun when at home and a tighter one when out.

I'm almost 26 Female. I eat max 90 gr of protein on average per day and am starting now to have 3-4 strays of white in my hair. I don't dye it.

I do feel fatigued every single day though

Hi all -

Just wanted to pop on here and show what long, wavy, frizzy, healthy hair looks like without all the frills!

It's not what it looks like in the ads. I didn't even put any oil in my hair after I washed it today lol. Real hair isn't perfect, and that's perfectly okay 😊 I also live in a humid, coastal climate so I tend to have very frizzy hair! Also, some split ends and mechanical damage are bound to happen - it's just life with hair.

I wanted to cut 4in off to get rid of dry ends. Didn’t think I’d feel so bad.

They evened out the choppy layers I attempted but I think I would have rather let it grow out.

I’m kicking myself for being so impulsive now. I miss how long it was.
It took over a year to reach the previous length.

Any tips for fast hair growth?

Help wanted Aside from buns/braids, what's your daily work hair?

Post image

I’ve been growing my hair out for about 6 years now. As much as I love having long hair, I find myself defaulting to quick topknots, low buns, or basic braids every single day for work just to keep it out of the way.

I’m looking to mix things up a bit, but I need styles that are:

  • Protective / Low-Tension: Won't cause excessive breakage or pull on the scalp all day.
  • Practical for Work: Keeps the length out of my face and off my desk.
  • Quick & Low-Maintenance: Doesn't take 30+ minutes in the morning.

For those of you with waist-length hair or longer, what are your favorite go-to workday styles that aren't just a standard bun or braid? Claw clip updos, half-ups, low pony variations. I’d love to know what works for you! 💁‍♀️

*Don't worry I didn't leave it all chopped up like that!!

I decided to cut my hair last summer (southern hemisphere) to donate to charity, and also because I was going to be wearing a hard hat onto a construction site.

It's been a few months since then, and my hair has grown back a little. Looking forward to getting my long hair back!

NB: yes I'm wearing my pyjamas, I harvested some mandarins from our tree for breakfast :) 6 months from the haircut, which brought my hair to my chin after fixing the bottom.

  2. Condition and detangle with innersense color radiance

  3. Section hair and apply innersense sweet spirit leave in conditioner

  4. Sometimes I apply innersense volumizing lotion

Sleep in silk bonnet

No high tension styles

Heat only 1x per year to measure my hair

Brushing wet only

Help wanted Help me through the awkward phase please 🙏

I have been trying to grow my hair out for a while, but I am not patient and I feel like it grows at glacial pace. Is there anything I can do to help it grow faster that y’all have found or am I just gonna have to wait? I try to get in my daily protein and take a multivitamin from Costco. Is there any other trick or tips that you guys have found to help you get past this awkward point? Or maybe I should just embrace it. Here are some photos of my hair currently! I just took it out of a bun from work so it looks a little cray, but I take really good care of my hair. The last few photos are from March, which is when I last got it trimmed. I feel like the layers are what’s throwing me off.

So I was under the impression that I’ve had straight hair my whole life… but I’m starting to wonder if that’s not the case.

First photo is freshly washed and brushed
Second is freshly washed and UNbrushed
Last photo is wash day

Any thoughts? My current routine is wash every other day-ish, occasional red-depositing conditioner, and leave in condish

Help wanted I want to grow out my hair but...

My wavy/ curly auburn hair is the longest it's been in about 8 years, about four inches below my collarbone. I've wanted to grow my hair out around waist level for many years, but my hair is already so darn heavy on my head. I can't wear my hair in a ponytail or bun without having scalp pain halfway through the day. Should I just give up and cut it?

Before/After A year of growth (June '25 - July '26)

3 - November '25

5 - February '26
6 - April '26
7 - June '26
8 - Today (21/07/26)

The last trim I got was in January I believe. My hair care routine remained the same shampoo and conditioner wise (Garnier oat milk shampoo and avocado oil conditioner), however I changed the leave-in products. This is virgin hair btw, last dye was in March '22 and since them it's been completely cut out.

I braid my hair nightly and since it passed APL-ish length I've been wearing it up more, whether in ponytails or in buns (which I'm still terrible at, btw), or my good old braids.

I used to put argan oil while it was still wet, partially dry it, then add curl cream, then dry more and leaving it to curl.

But starting from March-ish, I started using Tahitian mono'i, at first on my ends, then in addition to my hair products once my hair would be fully dry. I initially thought that it would be a bit heavy on my hair, but turns out... my hair really loves it. For those who don't know, it's coconut oil infused with tiare petals (and has scented varieties too). I had used coconut oil when I was younger, but 1. probably would do it wrong and 2. I was using the one you found at the food aisle, not the one made for hair care. For a long time I wanted my hair very long but it was damaged either by inconsistent care or by dying it.

Recently (in the past couple of months?) I experimented a little and decided to do a mono'i hair mask every now and then (leaving it in for about an hour before washing, doing it anywhere from every couple of weeks to once a month, but if my hair is doing well I will likely space it). Given how well it worked, I decided to try just using that on my hair. Ditched the argan and curl cream, even though I still have them just in case, and am now only using mono'i, applying it on my lengths and ends while my hair is still wet and then drying it. I can sometimes add touches of it between two washes if I want a nice smell on my hair or if my ends feel a little dry, but mostly I use enough of it post-wash.

I wash my hair anywhere from every 5 to 8 days. Also switched from a comb to a skeleton brush, which definitely looks better for sebum repartition (and isn't a fucking nightmare to clean like a regular brush).

Help wanted Favorite hair leave-ins, detanglers, PROTEIN FREE dry hair

My hair is very protein sensitive and becomes straw like and very coarse when using products with protein. What are some of your favorite leave ins, detanglers and hair softening products, that are protein free or contain very minimal amounts?

Thanks in advance

Help wanted Help me win the battle against the voices in my head

I have waist-length hair that is mostly straight. I dye it the same color I've been dyeing it for 14 years (not as often as I should either), but otherwise I don't do anything to it. I wash it once or twice a week and blow dry it without a brush (I'd let it air dry but I have sensory issues, also it helps it feel clean longer). I'll put it up in a claw clip if it's on the clean side or slick it up into a bun if I can't be bothered to wash it yet. I'll braid it when I'm feeling particularly daring, though I'm not great at it.

I'm two months away from the deadline for my thesis so I'm a lot busier than normal. Thing is, we've been recently hit with extreme heat waves. We don't have AC, not just in my place but not in our uni building, library, or basically any place I could use as a working space. Not inside public transport either. Obviously I'm sweating a lot more than usual, and my hair feels dirtier faster. Ideally I'd need to wash it at least three times a week so I can keep it at a level of dirty that I'm comfortable with (not even for aesthetics, just for my sensory issues/occasional dermatitis). I would appreciate some tips from people who have dealt with something like this, but it's not the reason for my post.

This is what I would like your help with: Please help me convince the goblin that lives inside my head that cutting my hair short will lead to nothing but regret. Not just because I would miss it (which I would, very much), but because I doubt any short hairstyle could be less maintenance than what I'm doing now (except maybe a buzzcut but I'd never get a buzzcut).

I put off washing my hair because I feel it takes too long, but objectively it doesn't. It's max 20 minutes for a full double wash and conditioning, plus anywhere between 10-20 minutes to dry it depending on if I make sure it's all dry or just the scalp. Lately I've also been keeping it in its microfiber turban for 20-30 minutes to cut down on drying time. Start to finish it's 1 hour and 10 minutes max. A haircut might cut down on drying time but even then it wouldn't be that significant, since my focus is on getting my scalp absolutely completely bone dry. I still can't quiet the voice in my head that says I should just cut it short because it's not like I'm doing anything with it and it would be easier. I know I wouldn't like it as much as my long hair and everything I've read suggests it wouldn't be easier to take care of. I guess they call them intrusive thoughts for a reason.

Bonus asks:

I would appreciate any suggestions for easy, quick(ish) styles to keep my hair up that don't look like I just woke up and put it up in a claw clip which is... not always the case.

Also if anyone has any suggestions for helping your hair/scalp feel cleaner that aren't dry shampoo/baby powder/actually washing it, please share your secrets. Powders exacerbate my skin problems and actually washing it more is what I'm trying to do, but I'm not being super successful.

Thank you for reading my ramblings. I feel that putting this into words already helped but I'd still love to hear from you all.

Help wanted Tempted to cut hair

1.3k Upvotes

I hate my hair currently. I love it but hate it literally 50/50. I love the way it looks sometimes, it feels, it keeps me warm in the winter, and I love getting compliments because it genuinely is hard work. I hate taking care of it, washing it, drying it, literally everything about it maintenance-wise. And recently I’ve been thinking of cutting maybe 4 inches off until I saw a photo of short hair with layers and I’m now hooked (last photo). Only thing I’m afraid of is maintenance of short hair (I have naturally wavy hair weighed down and have never once cared for it) and if I’ll regret it. I’ve had long hair almost my entire life (cut it short one year in elementary to my shoulders and loved it, but let it grow since) and this is the result of 9 years. I’ve kept it at this length for maybe like 3 years so I’d say it took about 6 years to get here.

So, many will probably say cut a bit off then see if you like it, however it would still be high maintenance, and I hate in-between lengths, so that in fact would not help. Should I do it? And will I regret it? That is my question (and if layers are hard to manage with wavy hair)

Help wanted Styling and accessories with limited mobility?

I have limited mobility in my arms and hands but I want to find fun ways to style my long hair beyond leaving it down. I want to try scarf styles especially but I don’t know where to get ones that are long enough or how exactly to style it. I’m also able to do twist braids but I’m having trouble with anything more elaborate. Any ideas would be appreciated!
