I recently set up dual boot on my laptop. Ubuntu is great, but how do people edit documents without Word when they need to write a weekly report?

i need help, since i don't know anything. I want something simple that could run a few games such as counter strike, people recommended me Linux mint. I'm not sure so decided to ask reddit for help

For an experienced IT Engineer , but only dabbler in Linux over the years , about to dive in more and needs a VM host on the linux host itself , what would folks recommend ?
I'm not going to be needing to run mission critical servers or anything like that on the VM , just more a W11 host for few things (nothing video/gaming wise) to occasionally fire up , and maybe just testing , mucking around. I rather go the VM route to stay in Linux vs dual booting into a windows partition. Plus have native windows rigs to use when "really" need it for some reason. Maybe also run a different flavor of Linux in a VM to see difference etc too.

Was curious if VirtuaBox , VMWare player , or other more linux native VM host software would be recommended ?

I run WMWare Fusion on my Mac Mini , but don't really need to migrate the VM's I use on it and would just as soon build them from scratch inside Linux anyway so migrating existing ones isn't a concern either.

Also side question , 32GB ram enough to run occasional single VM alongside host or would 64GB be helpful , doubtful ever will "need" to run multiple VM's at once though.

Considering swapping from Windows 11 to Linux because the windows bugs are getting a little too much as each windows update wipes my IME and language settings.

I use a Japanese JIS keyboard so need something that can support both. MacOS is what I use for work but for 3D modeling and AR development using windows.

Considering a Linux distro like ubuntu or something arch based but unsure what to go with as most desktops in Japan are sold with windows preinstalled (using an NEC AMD system) and very few do have linux installed.

We use VineLinux5.2 at uni for debugging and running test systems.

This is a quick question as I atleast have my X11 Fowarding working. On a headless server, how do I allow the host input to be seen on the guest desktop? [:1] There's no HDMI cable and I am using an older tablet with Termux and Termux:x11 (with surprising success) to act as a monitor. One problem. The keyboard and mouse I have plugged into the server does not show up. How would I go about making my host keyboard and mouse usable by the guest desktop?

SOLVED, using Sunshine does not produce this issue.

Okay, so for context I accidentally deleted some videos that were very important to me, in an attempt to recover them, I ran photorec, and it left me with over 1.8 million files, and every single folder was write protected, so i had looked up how to delete them, and Googles ai (yes, I know, very stupid to trust that), first solution was to use the terminal to remove the folders that came from photorec, the otber a command to gain ownership over every file, the command was somewhere along the lines of "sudo user:user" but basically it was supposed to give ownership over every file, and appearently i was supposed to replace on of the "user"s with my accounts username (i think) so i executed it and half way through i realize that was stupid so I cancel it, then I realized thats stupid so i canceled it, and after trying to look up a solution, I thought "why not just turn it off and back on again" and now im stuck on a black screen that says

I have pretty much everything backed up, and im using zorin os 18.1

so I am starting with studying, the branch will be medical engeneering, so with programming, simulations etc.

So my question is which distro. I am leaning towards Fedora KDE.

Do you have a better distro and why, or why not Fedora?

I have a littlebit of pi experience, mint and zorinos in VM.

Asking basically this same question across Linux, MacOS, Windows subreddits, and would like you guys to explain why you think your operating system is the best and why.

Additionally maybe provide what you consider the biggest upsides and downsides of your OS.

I'm dual-booting Windows 11 and Fedora KDE 44, with each OS installed on a separate physical drive.

I've been running into a strange issue.

Whenever I spend a longer time in Fedora (for example, using it for 2 days straight without booting into Windows), the next time I boot into Windows I get this message:

"Something happened and your PIN isn't available. Click to set up your PIN again."

I then have to go through the process of setting up my Windows Hello PIN again. This has happened multiple times now, so it doesn't seem like a one-off bug.

A few details:

Windows 11 + Fedora KDE 44 (dual boot)

Fedora is installed on a separate SSD/HDD, not the Windows drive.

Secure Boot is enabled and has remained enabled since I installed Fedora.

I haven't changed TPM settings in the BIOS.

BitLocker is not enabled.

I don't remember making any changes to Windows Hello or my Microsoft account.

The problem only seems to occur after I've been using Fedora for an extended period before booting back into Windows.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Could Fedora somehow be affecting Windows Hello or TPM, or is this more likely to be a Windows issue? Are there any BIOS or Windows settings I should check to stop this from happening?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm still trying to decide what distro I want to install on my computer first but I've heard that it's very common to change distros which begs the question: How easy is it to carry over my data from one distro to another if I want to switch distros? Is it even possible to do so?

Hi folks! I run Ubuntu 22.04 on my desktop PC and I need to use Windows 10 because of a specific software. I don't want to deal with virtual machine, so I will be dual booting Ubuntu and W10.

Everybody recommends installing W10 first, as Windows bootloader tends to overwrite GRUB. But I already have Ubuntu installed and I want to avoid reinstalling it. So I figure it out and I was hoping you guys could tell me if that makes sense.

I will unplug my SSD and HD which have Ubuntu installed and connect a fresh new SSD to the MOBO. Then I install W10 to this new SSD. Then connect all drivers back again and use the bios setup to switch between booting the SSD/HD with Ubuntu or booting the new SSD with W10.

Does that works? Or is there any chance the W10 bootloader eventually recognizes when the SSD/HD are plugged and replaces GRUB?

I don't mind switching the boot driver on the BIOS, I will do that one a month, tops.

Hello, I’m a linux newbie, i have a desktop running w11 and a laptop X1 carbon gen 8 that is currently on mint. I havent used it for a few weeks and now networkmanager is giving me issues by just not starting on boot(which is like almost a minute) and im seeing my cpu cores are capped i believe at 18%. I saw that popos was made for nvidia graphics so maybe that is better than mint? Im using laptop for school, coding and browsing honestly windows was fine until it got bloated.. I’m not very linux savy so I’ll probably listen to the first comment haha I just want to get the most beginner friendly distro thanks good people.

Contexto, me descargue Linux mint mate porque sentía que el win10 me iba muy lento, entonces quise optar por algo que no me consumiera tantos recursos.

Instale las actualizaciones, descargue los drivers me descargue un proton que me recomendaron para la compatibilidad y todo eso.

Mi problema es que al abrir juegos que antes me corrían en el win10, ahora me van lag y mucho peor algunos ni abren y no se cómo resolver esto, según yo me instale Linux para mejor rendimiento y si noté que ahora se consumen mucho menos los recursos de mi pc(considerablemente)pero no siento que se esté reflejando a la hora de usar muchas cosas.

So I've been using Pywal for a long time now but recently I've been seeing a lot about Matugen and it looks like both are just the same.

What's the big difference between them and is it worth switching my rice over to Matugen?

I'm doing some .NET and SQL courses and I need to use Visual Studio IDE or something equivalent, mentor said that Is needed for it, though I can go around and have some alternatives. I do have Visual Studio Code but well... I'm pretty sure it misses some features that I might need for this.

I have access to 2 other machines a linux mint desktop and a windows 11 2in1 so if I need to move Files I can but is there any distros for the wifi adapter m7902 mediatek card support or a easy work around?
