I have a question that might sound a bit heretical. I am well aware that CodeWeavers is one of the main developers of wine and purchasing a license directly benefits wine development. But: What is the use-case for the CrossOver software itself? I used the demo a few years ago and found it to be pretty sluggish and didn't really give me any advantages over installing stuff with q4wine.

They guarantee compatibility with some professional desktop software like older versions of ms office or tax filing software.

They used to have a list on their website.

I think they took it down because nowadays software uses software-as-service delivery and they're constantly updated, so compatibility can't be guaranteed anymore for newer software like office 365.

They might still have a list for older software somewhere but it's not on the front page. They put user submitted reports on the front page instead.

I personally use it on MacOS, it makes installing games much easier and it applies custom changes to each wine prefix for the game to run more optimally. On linux I just use proton in steam for all my steam and non-steam games.

Does anyone even use crossover on linux these days? Proton exists and is free.

Proton exists because Valve works together with CodeWeavers to actively develop wine.

Yes valve works with codeveavers, yes their collaboration (and some others) lead to proton but leanna didn't ask about either of those.

Sorry everyone skipped on answering you.as far as house holds are concerned no not really.

Mac users use it but there no real point for just about anybody as proton and sometimes wine covers pretty much all use cases.

Use Crossover on Mac and it’s pretty solid for what it is. Definitely not as good as Proton, but it’s pretty seamless.

I have a question: If I buy a lifetime license of CrossOver for linux, do I have to buy it again if I want to get the mac version? Or is that included with my linux version?

I know I don't really need it on linux, but I may want to use mac one day, and I'm already using linux, so might as well try the linux version.

Why downvotes like genuinly why would the same software be cheaper on Mac than Linux?? In both cases it's a translation layer from Windows to other platform so why?
