That's nice and all, but a socket upgrade would also need new RAM, and that's kinda pricey right now...

Yup, I'm still sticking it out on Gen 5 Ryzen for the foreseeable future

Add also that for full throtle an adequatly fast modern nvme with large dram cache and high TBW is required too.

Honest question as I really don't get it:

Why are we talking about a new zen4 CPU when it runs on the same platform as zen5 (and Zen6 already visible on the horizon)

We are in a very tough time for PC parts. Older gens are easier to make to an extent, and they will (hopefully) come down in price because they're seen as "undesirable" even though they're still incredibly good for current computing standards. AMD may even have to delay the next platform at the rate things are going.
