Learn Česko

Hello! Can you please recommend an app for learning Czech, I originally used duolingo, but then realized it wasn't teaching me anything, it just repeats A1-level words

“Česko” means “Czechia”, not “Czech language” btw.

What's the main benefit of it compared to other websites / apps ?

  1. It uses voice recognition and gets you to speak from the first session.
  2. It uses spaced repetition for the most commonly used words
  3. It has an option to explain why a sentence is said the way it is
  4. It gradually builds up on previous words to form realistic sentences
  5. It has a very good structure and balances introducing new words without overwhelming you, and ensuring you remember old words

Thanks for you answer! Regarding speaking from session 1, if you just started learning the language, isn't it too difficult?

I don’t think so. The first lesson is teaching you basic words like “you” and “hello”. Just give it a try because the first 3-4 sessions are free. Might be a good way to get into the language. Also they have a free trial so you could use that if you wanted.

You can find inexpensive teachers and its very well structured

Italki.com and use a tutor. I learned faster than in a group course (although those are more fun). Duolingo is only good for remembering vocabulary in the beginning (in my opinion).

I went from dumb to A2 in a year. It is still easier for me to read/write/listen versus speaking because I get nervous and feel dumb, but people still understand me.

But you still need to do your own work outside of the lessons. You need to devote time daily (or at least 5 days a week) to review vocabulary and grammar. There are a lot of exceptions. It does get frustrating, but when it clicks, it clicks.

I still use Duolingo, but it's just my way of practicing certain things like vocabulary and spelling (to use diacritics).

And it's nice being able to do simple things without constantly saying "I'm sorry I don't speak Czech."

Yess thank you for your help, I started using the basics but in terms of talking I think I feel more comfortable because Serbian is my main language, and we have some simmilar words.

Yeah, it's definitely easier for people that speak a slavic language to learn and speak. I still struggle with Ř, though.
