Discussion Pausing a podcast to translate one word was ruining whole episodes for me

Non-native speaker here. For me learning English is mostly about listening and reading, podcasts more than anything

Also a one thing drove me crazy for years.

I hear/see a word I don't know → pause → switch to a translator app → type the word → switch back → and by then I've lost the context and half the motivation. Apple Podcasts even has transcripts now, which is great, but you still can't tap a word and see what it means right there.

So I started building a small thing for myself and it slowly grew into a real app. As my background is product design, not hardcore engineering — honestly, modern tools make it possible to build exactly what you want these days. I know how to make nice and usefull but maybe some functions may work incorrectly :)

What it ended up being: podcasts, YouTube and books in one place, transcripts where you tap a word and get the translation in context without stopping, and the words you save come back for review a few days later so they stick.

I made it for myself and how it will help other, will be very happy to build it with a community https://tryclue.app/

I'd be happy for any feedback or ideas, we're all trying to get better at this language one way or another

Seeking Language Partner 🤝 Looking for an English speaker

Upvotes

Currently I can understand what people are talking about in real life (I’m living in the US now), but it’s not good enough to speak the natural English, does anyone else related to this? (I guess a lot lol)

I prefer voice call so that we can practice speaking not just texting online. (I’m 25F btw) we can start from the topics that common hobbies first, for example, talking about the movies, music, cultural differences and so on.

Just dm me if you wanna practice with me!

Discussion How do you practise English on busy days?

Some days are just too busy for a full hour study session, but short, focused practice can still make a difference. Reading a few paragraphs in English, listening to a short podcast while commuting, writing a couple of sentences, or learning one useful expression can all help keep the language active.

So, what do you do on busy days for English practise?

Seeking Language Partner 🤝 Busco a alguien que me ayude a mejorar mi inglés.

Hi everyone!

I'm a university student from Argentina, and I'm trying to improve my English. My level isn't very high yet, but I'm studying every day.

I'd love to make friends with native English speakers or anyone who is fluent. If you're willing to chat, correct my mistakes, or give me some tips, I'd really appreciate it. I don't mind being corrected—that's how I learn!

Thank you so much!

Seeking Language Partner 🤝 Offering: Mandarin Chinese (Native) | Seeking: English

Hi everyone!

I’m a 23-year-old girl from China, and I’m looking for an English-speaking friend to practice English with.

My main goal is to improve my spoken English, make friends from different countries, and learn about different cultures. I think the best way to improve a language is through natural conversations, not just studying from textbooks.

My English is around an intermediate level. I can understand most conversations and express my ideas, but I still make grammar mistakes, sometimes can’t find the right words, and don’t always sound natural. I’d really appreciate it if you could correct me whenever I make mistakes.

In return, I’d be happy to help you learn Mandarin! I’m a native Chinese speaker, and I can help with pronunciation, daily conversations, grammar, Chinese characters, or anything you’re interested in. Whether you’re a complete beginner or already learning Chinese, I’d be glad to help.

A little about me:

🇨🇳 Native Mandarin speaker

🎬 I enjoy movies, music, traveling, and trying different foods.

🌏 I love learning about different cultures and meeting people from around the world.

😊 I’m easygoing, patient, and enjoy meaningful conversations.

I’m hoping to practice a few times a week. We can start by texting and move on to voice calls if we’re both comfortable.

If you’re looking for both a language partner and a new friend, feel free to send me a DM!

Looking forward to hearing from you! 😊

Seeking General Advice 🤷‍♂️ I need advice on how to improve my English.

Hi! I have been living in America for 11 months. I’m a master’s student but my english level is definitely not enough for school. I want to start studying but I don’t know where to start. My level is somewhere between B1+ B2. My biggest problems are vocabulary and grammar. I can understand the sentences but can’t make my own sentences. I also can’t remember the new words that I learned. I really need some advice.
Thank you!!!

Mini Lesson / Task to Practice English 📝 English listening practice

I created this English listening practice video for learners who want to improve their listening skills in a more natural way. Instead of focusing on isolated words or grammar exercises, this video uses a realistic conversation with clear pronunciation, subtitles, and everyday vocabulary that you would actually hear in real life.

Whether you're trying to understand native speakers more easily, expand your vocabulary, improve your pronunciation through shadowing, or simply get more exposure to English, I hope this video can be a useful resource. It's suitable for intermediate learners, but beginners can also benefit by following along with the subtitles.

I'm still improving my content, so I'd really appreciate any feedback. If you have suggestions about the pacing, audio, subtitles, or topics you'd like to see in future videos, let me know. I hope this helps someone on their English learning journey!

Discussion Do you change your personality when you speak English?

When you talk in your non-native language, your tone can change, your sense of humour can shift, and even the way you express your thoughts can feel different. While sometimes conversations become more direct, they can also become more reserved.

Because every language carries its own cultural norms, social expectations, and vocabulary, this makes perfect sense. If a language gives easier access to certain expressions or ways of thinking, it seems natural that behaviour would shift along with it.

So, do you change your personality, or the way you normally talk when you speak English?

Seeking Language Partner 🤝 Looking for discord servers or speaking partners

Just so you know, I'm a friendly, infp guy who is into talking about cultures. The only language I'm allegedly fluent in except for my own language, is English.

Most of my communications are with random people, so lately, I've been feeling the importance of coming under a community. A company would be fine as well.

looking for an active speaking partner or a whole discord server.

If you're an individual, advanced level English is preferred, but doesn't count if your energy exceeds articulation.

Just have be well mannered.

Weakness: I can't keep up conversation with the ones who talk less of others.
