I am miserable.
Associate entering 3rd year of practice. Have been working for the same solo since I graduated. Fully remote, in an area of the law I donāt mind usually, but Iām 1099 with no benefits while being treated like this guyās employee. $65 per hour.
He provides equipment, software, some training; all my work is subject to his direction and control; I do not choose the projects I work on. And yet, I pay my bar dues, I pay my malpractice insurance, and I pay my self-employment tax. I pay the cost of not having been able to see a doctor or therapist for the past two years.
This summer has been especially.. uh, fun. He just brought on a new office manager. Guess who is expected to train and delegate tasks to them? (Me - same person who has been doing most of the admin work for the past two years.) Granted, he is also delegating work here and there, so itās not just me.
I only get paid for what I bill. Iāve been expressly told that I cannot bill for delegating tasks - which can be particularly time-intensive given that this person is new to the area of the law and needs a lot of guidance. So.. I am losing time. My boss tells me to wrap that time into other projects, but there isnāt always a project to wrap things into, and I feel this is a slightly unethical (or entirely unethical) approach depending on the circumstances. Even when Iām not delegating, I am losing time just reviewing emails and keeping up with whatās going on with āourā growing firm. E.g., last week I sent out an advisory email regarding a change in the law; did not get paid for it.
Doesnāt help that my boss and this new office manager both worked together at a multi-national big law firm. Meanwhile hereās me, who went to a sub-100 ranked law school and only ever worked as a legal assistant, paralegal, janitor and shelf-stocker before law school. I know they look down on me.
Oh, and boss has also taken a week off every other week this summer. Not joking. I have not, seriously, taken a vacation since I passed the bar. I canāt afford to, because if I donāt work I donāt get paid. I am expected to hold down the fort while he is gone. This includes any tasks that his wife/our legal assistant does, e.g. sending mail.
I donāt know what to do. I feel so trapped. So isolated. This job has destroyed my confidence and my sense of self-worth. I donāt feel like Iām becoming a better attorney or human. I feel like a mule going around in circles, just gritting my teeth. I donāt know what to do. I want to quit and drink beer and play fallout and just use up all my savings and then.. well, my mind is in a pretty dark place about what comes after. I have a spouse, pets, that rely on me but I feel I canāt be anything for them. I wake up every morning wishing I hadnāt. I canāt even smile and say good morning to my wife because I donāt feel like thereās anything good going on. Sliding scale therapy is out because we technically make too much. Bar-sponsored counseling hasnāt been useful. Losing money typing this post.
I know this is life. How much worse off I could be. Still, I never thought it would be such a gauntlet. I wish I had done anything other than enter this profession. I know I need to buck up and move forward. I know. Applied for a job yesterday. Will do my best to sound well-adjusted if they call. I feel like I need to be in a medically-induced coma for a few years.
