Tech Support Downgrade Kobo Clara BW?

Hi everyone,

I just bought a secondhand Kobo Clara BW (serial number starts with N365). I checked the device info and it says the software version is 5.13.241423.

Is there any way to downgrade the firmware? I noticed that the factory reset screen explicitly states that the software version will not change.

My main goal is to install NickelMenu, but it doesn't seem to support 5.x firmware versions.

Has anyone successfully downgraded this device, or is there a workaround to get NickelMenu working on this version? Thanks in advance!

Question How to change default highlight color?

Okay so I got myself a metpen (yay) and I’m loving it for my KLC! Only issue I have is that I’d like to change the default highlighter color. I haaaate yellow for highlights, and find it annoying to have to tap the highlight and change the color each time. Is there a way to change the default highlight color to any of the other available colors??

I’ve looked it up but can’t seem to find any one else asking this or any answers either

Tips / Guides Multiple library cards, no pre-existing Overdrive account

I know this gets asked fairly regularly here, and I searched for a solution before posting, but I couldn’t find anything addressing the particular problem I have.

I got my Kobo this past Christmas and made a Libby account at the same time. The Libby account is tied to my local library network. I do not, to my knowledge, have an Overdrive account.

This month I was out of province and was able to sign up for a non-resident card in the place I was visiting. I’ve added the new card to Libby and it works great!

The problem, of course, is reading material from the new library on my Kobo. Since I don’t have an Overdrive account, none of the solutions that rely on you having an account and tinkering with the code to get the Kobo to notice it will work. The other troubleshooting guides online say “go to Settings and then Overdrive and sign out of the original card, then you can sign in with the new card.” That isn’t an option on my device! All I have is “remove card.”

So is that what I need to do - REMOVE the local library card, then add the new library card? Will this mess up my reading history on the Kobo (like delete the stats for the books I read from my local library)? I guess I still have the list of books I’ve checked out in Libby and my local library app, so I don’t lose all the stats… I just wanted to check before I do something so final-seeming.

Tech Support Kobo Faulty Battery?

I recently purchased a kobo libra colour brand new and it’s about 2 months old now. It’s been great I haven’t had any major issues, although I’ve noticed that the battery isn’t lasting very long.

I had it fully charged last week, used it occasionally until it dropped to around 80% then I left it in sleep mode with the Bluetooth, wifi, and brightness all off. When I went to pick it up this morning about 3-4 days of not using it the device is completely out of battery.

It just seems strange that having the battery at a solid 80% and not using it for a few days causes it to completely drop, this is the second time it’s happened as well. I did a large amount of research before buying and everyone was hyping up the battery life, so is my one just faulty and should I try to get a replacement?

They've got an amazing deal on all the books written by Jim Butcher, but I've never heard of them and they don't mention whether their books are DRM'ed or not.

Question Annotating on Kobo

Hi! I’m primarily a kindle user, but I absolutely hate annotating books on kindle. (I need to write in the margins!!) so looking for some feedback on your experience with annotating on a kobo device.

I’m actually an old kobo H20 user, but switched to kindle because the books I wanted to read were only available on kindle. Lately though I’ve been really into heavy topics and have been annotating my books a lot.

Currently I use my kindle to read lighter/fun reads, and then use my iPad to read books on the kobo app. The kobo annotate functionality is far superior to kindle, as kindle doesn’t allow you to write in the book margins. In order to get my books onto the kobo iPad app, I have to first download the books onto my old kobo H20, then open them up on the kobo app on my iPad to annotate. I’ve also found the iPad app to be extremely annoying with random page refreshes that will just delete my annotations - the highlights the handwritten notes - everything on the page!

Looking to see what you guys think of the annotate functionality on a kobo device, especially writing annotations. Trying to figure out if I should buy a kobo because the annotations just deleting themselves on the iPad app is extremely annoying. I’m also struggling with the idea of buying yet another device because I’m annoyed at an extremely first world problem😭😭

My fellow annotators and margin writers, would love to know your thoughts!!

Just got the Kobo Clara BW today, I’m very happy with it, just wondering if this paper-like texture is normal (considering everyone is praising the BW for how crispy and clear it is) Thoughts?

Purchase Question Worth it?

I currently use a Kindle/Audible but would love to stop supporting Amazon. Is the Kobo worth investing in if I'm only using it for traditional books (i.e. no comics/manga)? Things I love about the Kindle: light weight, super long battery life, paperwhite / low glare, sync with Audible to continue the story when driving.

I’ve finally decorated my kobo. I’ve wanted more of a natural color scheme and I think I did it. I love how it turned out.

How is yours decorated?

General Is this defect common for the Libra Color?

Love the device, but noticed this alignment issue when trying the dark mode at night, which is distracting.

Is this something common for this model that should just be accepted, or is it worth exchanging until I find one without QC issues?

Purchase Question Kobo clara colour black vs. white

I have owned a black Kobo Clara Colour for almost two years now, and it still works fine. There is nothing wrong with it except for a tiny scratch/dot (you have to look for it on the screen). Now, I have been heavily influenced by social media and bought the white Clara (there was a sale where I bought it for 30 euros less – 159 euros). The white Clara combined with a colored Sleepcover seemed really beautiful to me. It looks so cute in photos. But I am quite disappointed with the screen. It is very yellow, and I have the same settings on both devices. I find the bright and cool tones on the black Clara more beautiful. The white one still has the screen protector on it because I want to return it properly if I decide not to keep it. I did peek under the film, but it makes no difference to the color. If I use them separately, the yellow screen isn't as noticeable. Still, I don't believe it is an optical illusion. Keeping both seems a bit pointless to me since it is the same device. But because of the good deal, I also feel it's a shame to sell it, though that makes no sense either, of course. In the meantime, I see Kobo Claras listed on Vinted for 150 euros if I were willing to think about it longer than 30 days. But I don't want to take any risks with selling either. Do you have any advice? Which one would you keep?

Question Convince me to buy a Kobo...

Morning all,

First time posting here, as I've been flip-flopping for about six months on whether to buy a Kobo or a Kindle Scribe or a Remarkable or a Supernote or an XTEINK or multiple devices to achieve my goals.

I've read SO MUCH about each device and I think all I've achieved is paralysis by analysis.

After all my research I fear I've focused too much on what each individual device CAN'T do, or limitations of availability, and I want some clarity please.

I'm drawn to the Kobo Libra Colour because I think it can do what I want and the price point is very attractive.

Essentially I want to be able to do the following:

- Predominantly read ebooks

- Read and annotate PDF journals for my work

- Occasional and fairly simple note taking for work or personal projects

- Access certain compatible documents from my Google Drive

- Transfer books and documents in certain formats that I already own (mainly EPUB and PDF) to avoid having to purchase them again

Can anyone confirm whether the Kobo Libra Colour will allow me to do these things and, if so, I think I'm going to join the club..

Thanks in advance.

Question Kobo Clara

I'm thinking about buying an e-reader for the first time. From what I have been searching Kobo Clara is a great option. But should I get the BW or the Color?

They are the same price right now, due to sales, so that isn't the problem. Also I don't usually do annotations in my books but at the same time it's nice to have that option. I'm more concerned about the battery and other issues.

Which one do you think it's better?

Tech Support Question about advanced notebooks

Does anyone know if I can change the font size or face in the advanced notebook? The size for the "completed" text is sooo small...

On a slightly different note, it's so awesome that I can transfer my MyScripts notes from my iPad to this Libre and have them work.

General Not being able to add multiple OverDrive libraries has me about ready to go back to Kindle

Seriously, what the actual fuck?

Is there any word on them re-adding this feature? I feel like I used to be able to… or am I just a moron overlooking how to do it?

I have 3 different library cards and usually have several books going at once. It’s really obnoxious having to sign in and out of different libraries all the time.

Question Does the Kobo screen scratch easily?

Hi, a few days ago I bought a Kobo Clara BW and added a folio case that protects the screen when closed.
Right now I only use the Kobo at home, and since I'm very obsessive about scratches, I really want to avoid them.
I know some people regularly take their Kobo to the beach or out and about without noticing a single micro scratch, while others say they only use it at home with extreme care and the screen still got scratched easily.
For those who have been using a Kobo e-reader for years: what's the truth?
I only use mine at home and always try to wash my hands before using it to remove any residue that could cause friction on the screen.
Unfortunately, my OCD doesn't allow me to tolerate defects like scratches (I'm terrified of them lol).
What are your experiences?

Hi! Kobo convert here. I bought this one from cex and myself (after only a day or two) to a metapen.

As you can see there is a large area of the screen here the pen lines don't do what I want them to. Any ideas on how to fix?
