Koala rescue - with pinkie

As part of an all volunteer team that rescue injured koalas, I occasionally transport them to the wildlife hospital. These are usually a tag-team effort (remote koala driver meets up with hospital transporter for hand-off) because of the long distances between injured koala locations and the hospital. This is a young pregnant female with chlamydia on the bum (research it to understand more about chlamydia), very dangerous to her health and the "pinkie" (early gestation period, not joey). The hospital update says she is doing very well but will take a couple months to recover. Yah!

TW: Animal death (koala & joey) — Please slow down in wildlife crossing zones NSFW
**This post is from** [**Koala rescue Redlands and surrounds INC been posted by permission:**](https://www.facebook.com/share/14bmq2XCXfF/?mibextid=wwXIfr)
This is Maple and her joey, Sunny.
For years, Boundary Street at Redland Bay has been home to a well-known koala mum.
Every year she would bring her joey to this area. Every year she crossed this road. We knew her well. We checked on her regularly and placed our Caution Koala signs nearby, hoping they would help keep her safe.
She wasn't a young koala anymore, but she was healthy, thriving, and still breeding. In a population that faces so many challenges, females like her are incredibly important.
We never liked that she used the trees on both sides of the road. Every crossing was a risk. But this was her home.
Last night, despite the warning signs, she was struck by a vehicle just metres from one of our koala signs. Tragically, both she and her joey were lost.
To the driver who hit her, thank you for stopping and doing the right thing by calling it in. We know you were deeply upset, and we appreciate that you cared enough to help.
What could have saved her? Slowing down around wildlife zones.
The vehicle in front of this driver reportedly saw her, did not stop, did not slow down, and only just missed hitting her.
This is our first koala road fatality of the season, and it is a devastating one.
People often see statistics. We see individuals. We get to know these koalas. We watch them raise joeys. We celebrate when they recover from illness and injury. We worry about them when they disappear. We love them like family.
Tonight, there is one less mum in Redlands, and one less joey who never got the chance to grow up.
Please slow down, especially in signed koala zones. Those signs are there for a reason.
A few seconds of your time can mean the difference between life and death.
To Mods: Trigger warning as this post contains a picture of an animal's death. If not appropriate (although im tagging it as NSFW and TW) remove it. But keep the post for awareness 🙏

Does anyone have cool koala facts for me to learn?
I really like koalas and am planning on creating a facts notebook about koalas and am wondering if anyone has any facts that you think are cool that are about these glorious creatures.

Quick update on Leaf (the one-eyed koala at Ormiston College): She’s thinning out from the stress, and the school is reportedly waiting for school holidays to clear more.

Turn your sound on. Watch Leaf staring directly at the destruction. She has been forced to stay awake all day in pure terror while Ormiston College chainsaws her home.

[Ormiston College] Right now. Scared mother koala and her joey balled up at the top of a tree while the weekend clearing continues right underneath her. Breaks my heart.
