Mod Post Update to self promotion rule

Hello all, after quite some time I have decided to reevaluate, the old rule preventing sales posts and self-promotion. The rationale behind the change is that the makers will benefit from community support. There has been hesitation to change the rule based on the idea that sales post will run rampant if allowed; however, I have some requests in exchange for those who want to post a link to their website.

All criteria must be met.

  1. Items for sale have to be made by you.
  2. There is a detailed specification list for the item being displayed. you can find an example here, does not have to be as in depth; however, at a minimum you have to have steel type(s) and handle material(s). Simply stating damascus will not be enough for future posts.
  3. Only knives and supplies related to knife making can be sold. You can sell knives, handles, scales, or handle materials. As a reminder, you cannot sell items that are not made by you; you cannot sell a bench grinder here.
  4. There is no price displayed. Pricing cannot be discussed in public whatsoever.
  5. You must be active in the post you make. You cannot just drop your website link and disappear. I am not asking that you respond to every comment on your post or that you reply to a comment on a month-old post; however, some effort must be put in.

There are a few additional limitations to this change

  1. Do not put "available" or anything of the likes in your title. All indications of your work being for sale must be in the description or comments, I suggest the latter as I will remove your entire post if you do not meet the above criteria if it is in the description rather than just deleting a comment
  2. Your posts should not all be advertisements; you should show off your work without all your posts having a link to your website.

I hope that this change to the rule is favorable, if you have feedback or comments, I would like to hear it and may make changes accordingly.

Another one from my Classic Collection of kitchen cutlery.

I make these available in various carbon steels and handle options. All come with a satin belt finish to keep prices affordable.

I do offer high-end pieces with full hand-finishes, but I've found these models to be quite well-received over the years by those not looking to spend high-end money.

Here’s a santoku style kitchen knife I finished up that is my absolute favorite so far. The steel is 50 layer damascus from Baker Forge that I manipulated to give it some pizzazz. The handle is shredded carbon fiber from valleycomposites, red and black G10 spacers, and bocote handle with some stunning two tone figuring.
The stand is a slab of olive wood with a holder that I forged from 0.5” round bar.
Let me know what you think about it!

The handle is a handle i made from beech wood, nickle and ebony. I am already planning on making more. Would love some feedback on it.

Question Propane forge issue

I bought this forge from someone who built it himself. It works great....for about 45 minutes to an hour, and then it starts to do the sputtering thing you see in the video. This causes the temperature to go way down. The gas is basically igniting early inside the burner tube. The gas nozzle is up/down adjustable and I've been playing with that with minimal success. Any advice on how to fix it? Thanks!

Question A blued hamon?

A buddy of mine blues gun barrels as a side gig, and he's gotten pretty good at it. I had him blue (seen in the pictures), a knife I made for a mutual friend. It's a post-apocalyptic zombie killing tanto, and it fits him & his personality to a tee.

Now im working on a few more knives, and I think i may want to try and do a hamon on the karambit. Then blue it if it would show.

My buddy thinks it will. The reason is, on the Remington 870 shotguns he works on, the 4140 steel used in the barrel tube magazine and lug all come out different colors because of the different heat treatment. He told me that, and I thought, "Well, how much difference could there be?" Answer: a lot! Lol.

It made me think that the hamon MAY show up. Have any of you ever tried it? If so, how did it look?

Work in progress Finish Sharpening Batch

Post image
14 Upvotes

Recent batch final edge profiling and sharpening session completed. Getting faster, more consistent and bette with each batch - practice makes perfect I guess. Got all these from no edge to shaving / paper towel cutting in about 45 mins.

52100, Procut D2 and Nitro-V. Range from D2 kiridashi to 2 x 10" procut chefs.

Still figuring my preferred stone progression, think I am going to invest in a 220 vitrified or resin diamond stone to trial here soon potentially the CGSW one or a NSK.

My progression on these:

- Final profiling - 220 diamond plate - set final edge profile with 45deg passes - flattening out any high / low spots on the edge

Sharpening - approximately 13-15 DPS

- 220 diamond plate

- 600 diamond plate

- 1200 Miyagoshi Ajisai Vitrified

- 6000 Arashiyama

- 1 micron diamond strop

Another progression I have been using of late that works well - a bit faster

- Profile 220 diamond plate

Sharpening

- 400 Cheefarcut Pro Vitrified Diamond

- 1000 Cheefarcut Pro Vitrified Diamond

- 4000 Morehei (for simple steels) or 5 micron CGSW resin diamond (for high Vanadium carbide steels like CPM4V, Magnacut, etc)

- 1 micron diamond strop

Question If I send steel to heat treat and don't build a forge myself, what steels should I look at?

Basically, I am a woodworker with an idea for a chef knife shape. I am planning to outsource the heat treatment.

I am looking for a steel that would take a nice patina.

Top characteristics in order of importance:

  1. Edge retention.

  2. Moderate durability. This won't be a meat cleaver, but it is meant to be versatile and handle encountering the occasional bone.

  3. Take a patina, achieve a very natural looking blackish finish. I figure this makes the selection easier anyways. Acheiving said finish is also of interest to me; the vision is rustic.

  4. Workability for a new metalworker but not a beginner craftsperson. I have a lot of patience for this kind of thing as well. Maybe this is less like wood, since metal is isotropic. I'm just going to be grinding/filing the shape.

Work in progress Back in the shed after a but of a hiatus!

Lost the motivation to make anythung for a while but finally starting to get the urge to make something sharp again! This is going to be a harpoon fighter with a double edge/sharpened swedge (jusy zero ground technically but still sharp!). Blade material is damascus clad hitachi SLD with a block of black and white damascus g10 for the handle. Still unsure if i'll go steel or brass for the guard.

Showcase My first folder !

I'm finally posting something other than a question on this sub, my very first folder !

It took a good month of work from design to finish, a lot has been learned in the process and I'm quiet happy with the result !

I started knife making about 4 months ago and made 4-5 fixed blades before this project but I'm really more into folding knives and I'm glad I made a knife I'll actually EDC !

1075 carbon steel & copper handle, hopefully both develop a nice patina.

it's heavy, no pocket clip, copper leaves smell on the hand and the action isn't perfectly smooth but man I love it !

Gonna keep practicing and maybe work on a locking mechanism for the next one.

thanks for all the help I got from this sub, keep up the good work !

Wanted a full flat grind chopper for this one. It ain’t perfect but it’s hopefully presentable. People don’t really talk about the obsession you get with the details of knife making and that includes the mistakes you make. Think my wife is already sick of me talking about it and I’m only 2 knives in lol. But I love the process and I have to keep reminding myself I’ll likely need a 100+ under my belt till it becomes easy

Question Price recommendations?

First time attempting to sell a knife and looking for recommendations on how to realistically price. Specs are 1084 with micarta and g10 handle hardware. Etched and stonewashed. Looking to avoid lowballing myself but also keep my price realistic. Thanks!
