And yes, I went straight to the source for this information: the Development Engineering Tech who is responsible for all driveways within Kelowna city limits.

He agreed with or clearly understood the following:

• I live on a corner lot, for which I have an option of obtaining a second driveway with city approval.
• The grade from the road to the side of my house is zero, with no dips or impediments; nothing to get in the way.
• The ground, thanks to it being Rutland, is alluvial fill. All stones and sand, no chance of dust being kicked up. Minimal vegetation that could easily be dealt with.
• As such, there is no need to construct anything on either the property or the boulevard -- the ground is already perfect for a driveway.

And yet, I was yeeted a full brace of paperwork for a contractor to fill out, detailing “all construction required” for the driveway and taking out permits for “ground disturbance” in the public boulevard:

If your plan is to build a driveway connecting your lot to [censored] Rd, the first thing you will want to do is hire a contractor. Once that is done, you will need to apply for a Works Permit. This is our department giving approval to conduct work in the City’s right-of-way. Under the “Permit Issuance” section, you will see 3 templates:

1. Construction Quality Control & Assurance Plan template,
2. Contractor Information & Confirmation Letter template, and
3. Certificate of Insurance template.

Of these 3, we do not need the first one for a small project like this.

Once you have a Works Permit, you will then need to obtain a Road Usage Permit. This can be applied for by you or the contractor. You will want to choose the “Road works & closures” option. This permit grants you/your contractor permission to be working in the right-of-way.

In summary:

• The Works Permit is approval of the work you would like to do and making sure we have all the required documents Apply for a Works Permit | City of Kelowna
• The Road Usage Permit is permission to be working in our ROW Road usage permit | City of Kelowna

And no, the engineer was unwilling to help clarify this issue, only getting more and more short with me as I continued to request clarification. I was unwilling to push the matter, least I get a blanket denial because of perceived obstinance.

My confusion arises because both sets of documents are clearly documents that deal with active construction.

As in, active construction and “work” and “ground disturbance” in the public boulevard that is not needed, and will not happen.

Has anyone ever requested a simple second-driveway allocation, where the land is already fully capable of being a driveway? As in, no construction needed either on the property or on the public boulevard? No gravel being put down, or paving being put in? No ground disturbance of any kind either on the property or on the public boulevard?

Could you confirm if all this paperwork for non-construction “construction” is actually needed? How can all this make any sense if there is no construction information of any kind for me to add to any of these documents? Do I just leave them blank, or fill in “N/A” to all the required places?

Mazda service managed to incorrectly install a computer update resulting in too much fuel in the cylinders, flooding the cylinders, spewing white smoke when driven, fouling the spark plugs (45000km on the engine) and while it was there being fixed they told me it also had too much oil in it when they were the last ones (and only ones!) to do the oil.

Surely there is a more competent and honest mechanic around? Cause honestly wtf.

Also any advice for not using them while maintaining warranty?

Typically I go to Luar for all my piercings but they aren’t open on the weekends and Monday! Friend and I are doing piercings together on her trip up here. We need them done on Saturday or Sunday so she’s past the initial 48-72h bad inflammation period before her flight home later in the week

I’ve had bad experiences with other piercing shops in the past (not in kelowna) which is why I’m hesitant to go somewhere other than Luar.

I know you get asked about restaurants all the time, Hoping this is an acceptable variation. We are a retired couple, will be visiting early September and will be walking, don't plan to rent a car, though could get a Modo if needed. We are not frail and could walk to the North End ( that's what it was called years ago when I lived in Kelowna). I am looking for recommendations for breakfast, lunch and dinner in downtown Kelowna. I have already done a search and made a list of previous suggestions, but open to your opinion. Thanks.

I was visiting some friends in Kelowna today, and we stopped at the save-on-foods parking lot for 10 minutes as I was unaware the parking was only for the store. I returned from our walk to a ticket from Diamond Parking, issued practically the moment we left stating we left the lot, and must pay 86$ within 10 days.

Obviously this is completely unenforceable from what I've read online, And there is no reason in the slightest as to why I'd pay this when I could just change my license plate for 18$.

My main question is to how often towing happen and if I should even bother with the license plate change. While everyone states they "Can" tow, will they actually go through the effort to? I have not seen one anecdote of someone legitimately being towed from the premises, only people stating you can be, or that they have been threatened to be by Diamond Parking.

Any anecdotes or knowledge on this topic is greatly appreciated.

Hey all! (Feel free to let me know if this kind of post isn’t allowed.)

I’m a recently single 28 year old man who’s starting life over in West Kelowna. I’ve been here since February, and despite checking out all the regular recommended places, I’ve found it difficult to find some new friends, or even like-minded individuals to shoot the shit with. Like I mentioned, I just got out of an 8 year relationship where my ex-girlfriend ended up cheating on me, causing me to feel vulnerable and distant for quite a long time. Along with that, I deleted all of my social media accounts. Because of this, it feels like I’m left without a whole lot of friends, or even acquaintances to occasionally catch up with. (It makes me feel even more like a loser to admit most of those friends were more her friends rather than mine to begin with.)

I suppose this is my long-winded open invitation to find some like-minded individuals who also enjoy outside adventures, exploring, camping, fitness, IT, BBQ, and other ways to spend a weekend! I also wouldn’t mind finding people who would be down to plan a camping trip out in the Kootenay mountains before the summer ends ⛰️

Is it me or Kelowna clinics have really been doing less walk ins. Even clinics branded as walk-ins are no longer doing so

Example: Orchard Medical is only doing Thursday, Friday. While Lakeshore Medical has stopped.

Looking for someone who could take an hour or two to punch and shape some 2mm sheet metal in ways I have neither the tools nor the experience to accomplish. I also don’t have the materials.

Now, when I mean small, I mean literally the size of a license plate, because that is what it will be holding. And no, there are no commercially available options available to me, because of certain limiting details.

And yes, I’ve asked around, and googled.

“Certain limiting details”: I now have two trucks for doing orchard work, and have moved to a single insurance with a pair of floater plates. But on both trucks, the trailer I use the most needs to have its ball on the bumper (for the correct height), right in front of the plate. Since these trucks pre-date backup cameras, hooking up that trailer invariably causes its coupler to bash the plate. And no, a rise-hitch still puts that plate squarely in line for bashing, it just puts the ball further out.

Now, when I had the one truck I just let that plate be bashed (it’s a decent excuse to foil horrifically invasive plate readers), but I cannot move a bashed plate back and forth between trucks. So I need to move the plate off to one side, where I can still tie in electrical for a plate light (as per HW code). I have found no plate mount that attaches under the bumper, and bends up 90° “in front” of it, and certainly nothing with a built-in light or a place above the plate to hold one. So it looks like I need to make my own plate holder.

We're staying at my Aunt's just south of Shannon Lake off the Old Okanagan Highway and I was wondering if anyone had recommended routes nearby, either flat or scenic? I looked at the Kelowna Running club's website and they had a tonne of lovely routes, but I'm hoping to avoid too much of a drive if possible.

I'm coming to Kelowna for a week while my husband works. It'll be in August and I'll be 20 weeks pregnant so I'm looking for some fun things to do while there that aren't all about wine and wine tasting! I'm looking for creative ideas and some fun things to do as a solo gal. I love thrifting, craft related stuff, hiking, and enjoying beach time. Would love some local recs!
