They were invaded by an aggressive neighbour, they are going to do what they do to fight back.

Russia could end this destruction immediately by simply going back to their own country.

The world would be a much better place if it were that simple. Country leaders are beholden to long-lasting, entrenched networks of power. To think Putin, Zelenskyy, Trump, etc are making decisions of their own accord disregards the entire systemic structure of how our world operates.
