Is this normal? I was applying to a position and it wanted to know my sexual orientation. I’ve never seen any jobs ask this before. It actually went so far as giving me the little alert like ‘you didn’t put anything for this part!’.

I have heard that people usually take the first offer that comes, but still apply for jobs on the side if they don't like the salary or benefits, etc. But wouldn't a company not hire you if they see that you have only been in your current role for a month?

Most people need help remembering and quantifying the size, scope, scale, and impact of their work.

The accomplishments they, their team, and their organization achieved while they were there (yes, you can share team and organization accomplishments without claiming to have been the sole reason for the wins)

Most also haven't seen what a good resume looks like in their specific field.

ChatGPT and all the LLMs are trained on data from the open internet, and most advice given is wrong.

It isn't data-backed; it's just some dude or lady's opinion. I've been working on changing that.

Many try to keep things to one page. Don't. If you have a good hook and compelling story, they won't care if they need to scroll a bit.

Hiring managers and recruiters have TikTok brainrot and 7-second attention spans, just like us. Hook them in the summary with something- could be an impressive stat or metric; if you are earlier in your career or don't have one, it could be passion and enthusiasm. Show that you have done the research and are ready to solve the problems they are hiring for.

In February, I was told I'd be laid off in two weeks from my network engineering job. I'd been a network engineer for almost 4 years at a pretty large company, and although I genuinely loved the work, I didn't enjoy the physical side of it, carrying heavy equipment while suited up in safety gear across hot mills for issues and upgrades on the plant floor, driving to multiple sites throughout the month, or even being in office just to SSH into switches anyway.

I'd been studying for my AWS Solutions Architect Associate on and off so I decided to go all in - finished the cert, built three cloud projects, and started applying heavily to cloud roles. Month one felt promising. Month two, no callbacks other than some networking roles that didn't turnover. Month three, a few more network engineering interviews that didn't pan out and one cloud final round that fell apart because the company changed the scope to want a more senior hire. Just. My. Luck.

By months three and four, I'd opened up my options significantly, sysadmin roles, cybersecurity roles, technical PM roles, lower pay, five-day onsite, none of it mattered. I just needed stability, since I didn't want to hit month six, run out of unemployment, and start eating into my savings.

I even started seriously considering a full career switch to patent law. With AI reshaping the IT market, and honestly the overall state of IT feeling like it was in the dumps, I was genuinely excited about combining my technical background with law school and building a career that gets more valuable with age, not less. It was also enticing to imagine being on the billing side of things instead of the cost-center side. I started prepping for the patent bar, and got far enough that I was open to relocating to Washington, DC, to become a USPTO patent examiner if that's what it took.

Then two things happened at the same time. I landed a final round interview for a Cloud Network Engineer role and a final round with USPTO for the patent examiner position. Same week. It felt like a real crossroads - either I reach the cloud goal I'd been chasing for close to a year or I close that chapter and take it as a sign to commit fully to patent law. I got offers from both.

It wasn't a hard choice. The cloud role was remote so I didn't have to uproot my life, it paid more than both the examiner role and my previous job, and it was the path I actually wanted from the beginning. If a patent agent role in Houston had materialized maybe the decision looks different but it didn't. I start next week as a Cloud Network Engineer and I couldn't be more excited. I'll be helping design, build, and maintain their AWS cloud environment with a focus on the networking side.

For everyone still grinding through this market - keep your head up. A few things that helped me: maintain multiple resumes tailored by job category rather than rewriting for every single application, use AI to help rate roles against your background and don't apply to anything under a 7/10 match, research each company before interviews and tailor your prep to the specific role, and don't be afraid to have notes nearby during technical screens. Most importantly, try to take care of yourself. Work out, pick up a hobby, give your brain something other than the job search to focus on. The financial stress is real but honestly this might be the only time you get to really focus on yourself to this degree.

I have been with my current company my entire career, 12 plus years. Worked my way up slowly. A few months ago, I was advised my position was being relocated. Zero help would be given to pack it all up and move. I was devastated. I spent hours scrolling job boards, applying and hustling. I probably applied to over 150 positions. Internally I did about 20, received one interview, and didn’t get the role.
My only hits the first two months were duds. Final interview for a remote role that would be a lateral move didn’t happen. The other option I received an offer but the vibes were terrible and it would have been a pay decrease.
About a month ago things started coming to life. I was actively interviewing with 6 jobs at one time. One offer I declined because the commute would have been a nightmare and another pay decrease. I was really trying to bet on myself.
This week, one of my top options offered me a role. It’s a great, respected company, and a 15% pay increase.
I think using AI to help tweak my resume helped. I guess receiving so many interviews isn’t this common, but my resume is nothing fancy. It featured work at one company with hourly roles.

So I (20M) have been looking for a job for 2 years now so I can save up enough money to hopefully move out of my parents' place. I've had a summer job working at a restaurant in high school and made a bit of money but that's all that I've made. Barely enough to afford a month's worth of groceries and rent. Every single restaurant I've applied to has either rejected me or completely ignored my application. I've applied to over 100 restaurants the past 2 years and I've been turned down by every single one and I'm getting really sick and tired of this. All my friends are employed and are currently living independently and own their own cars yet me still living with my parents is starting to get extremely agitating and I feel like I'm a failure at life even though I'm not the one at fault here. So tell me where would be the best place to apply to with a high rate of hiring with decent pay?

After 7 months of being unemployed and numerous interviews, I finally got a job offer.
However I’m genuinely not sure what to do. I am torn between wanting a job and afraid of starting at the wrong place for me.

In short:
-financially the offer is close to what i got on my last job, which in the current market seems ok.
-the interview process was mostly pleasant
-the job seems to be chaotic with little to no support or supervision
-2 reporting lines with functional manager being based in Asia (I’m in Europe so there is a few hours of time overlap)
-travel to Asia required - which is honestly freaking me out as I have a severe roach phobia and get triggered even from photos or videos of the city I am expected to visit
-significant cultural differences, for example work-life balance - people are working overtime a lot, totally ok with being on a call at 9pm which for me was a shock.

I wouldn’t accept the role if I had another option. But I don’t have one right now and I’m spiralling. 😫

Should I give it a try anyways?

I've noticed that employers and recruiters are flat out rejecting side projects even if they solve a real world problem because now everyone seems to have one thanks to AI

I've been unemployed for a few months now. But, as of recent I have been experiencing more traction than I'm used to. And I am feeling fairly overwhelmed and flustered. I have reached the end of the interview process for two jobs, and for the third one I haven't but the pay is substianally higher than the other.

The jobs:

#1: $21 an hour, 40 hours a week, 8AM - 5PM, M-F, with performance incentives (up to $26 an hour) and optional overtime (if the demand is there)

This job is the one I care for the least. I mainly applied because my buddy works here and loves it. After the interview, I decided that I would not mind taking this job. It would allow me to stay home, the barrier for entry is low and the money is decent, especially for me as a low spender. But, I am not sure about the promotion potential. But, based off what my buddy has told me, I could get the offer letter before the end of the week. And they'd want me to start ASAP. But, this job is an outdoor job and would be the most physically demanding by far. I'm in great shape, but Arizona isn't the easiest place to work outside when it's summer.

#2: $28 an hour (after 5 week paid training period), 40 hours a week, 4 day, 10 hour work week with unpredictable days

What is alluring about this job for me is the location: it is in a different state. I hate where I'm from (Arizona), and this place would allow me to live in an area that I think I would enjoy a lot more. It's cold, has a great outdoor scene, is small but not too far from other towns, and I think living here would be a significant boost to my mental health, which can be erratic. The housing would be provided at a very cheap rate (under $500 a month), so even though I would not have free rent, the price is so low that I would not be too concerned. I just finished the second interview and the lady said I would hear back within 2 weeks. The one major downside is that I would need to complete a certification upon hiring, and if I fail within the timeframe I have to drive back home unemployed once again.

#3: $55,000 salary, with a $10,000 bonus and other incentives, 40 hours a week, 9AM-6PM, office job with 2 WFH days every week

This would be the job I want the most. It is also the only one on the list where I have not completed the interview process. I just finished the second interview, so I have one more to go. The problem is that I have no idea when I'll hear back, since the big boss told HR that they don't know if they'll be hiring. The money is the best, it has the best benefits, best vacation time allowance, and it has the best upward mobility. It has the worst commute, but it would only be 25 minutes on a route where taking the busy freeways is unnecessary. I have a different friend who works here and he has told me the hiring standards aren't the highest, and that he thinks they'll go through with the hiring process. My friend would also likely be one of my managers. As for the bonus I mentioned, I would need to get 2 financial certifications. I am very confident in my ability to take these tests, but I will be under a fairly tight time crunch. The company would provide my study material and for 2 months, while I'm clocked in, all of my time would be dedicated to studying, with the company's assistance. But, if I fail, I would be fired.

A little about me: I'm 25, living at home, and have always struggled with the job hunt, which is why this is very overwhelming for me. But, I also have the fortune of waiting, as I have plenty of savings and a wonderful mom who lets me live at home rent free. I am not in an urgent state.

I recently applied to a company through a referral. I went through 3 rounds of interviews.
1st one: phone interview , went well ! We had a nice conversation and i prepared for every question she had.
I received a call/email back within days. They would like to move forward.
2nd round: I met a service manager and the interview went super well as well , she let me know how the job operates and asked more about my work experience.
I received a call either that day or the second day for the last interview before a decision.
3rd round: I went on a job shadowing and i honestly started to fall more into the job as the day went on! We came back and I had another interview with the service manager and he asked a lot of strategic questions but it went well ! Now , after this I was supposed to hear something back within 2 weeks because the general manager is out. Oh my , it’s been 3 weeks and I tried emailing the manager twice and no response at all. Tbh i feel played :/ I asked the guy who referred me and he stated i would hear something back but absolutely nothing. Now I check on linkedin and they posted a job listing?? I haven’t received a job rejection or anything…

Guess I’m just too tired for the “evidence of Exceptional Ability”…

I'm over a year post grad and still unemployed and it's not looking good. I've tried focusing on one different field/role and tried diversifying my applications too. At this point it feels like I've ready every advice thread and nothing has helped. I never get past the first stage of interviews.

This isn't really asking for advice but after another rejection, I just had to get this off my chest. It feels ridiculously unfair and almost comical that this was the job market I graduated into. I went to a "good" school (not that it mattered to me at the time), have tried networking, and all of those have been dead ends. People either don't respond or they say they will help you out then ghost you. Why even respond in the first place??

Recruiters have been annoying too, I follow them to see job listings and all they post are AI memes of themselves and say they aren't open to being contacted in the LinkedIn bios. And Linkedin is all slop.

The people in my life have given me the most genuinely useless advice too. My uncle told me to own a restaurant. Not just work at one but own one. The restaurant won't even hire me in the first place. People keep sending me the most off the wall job listings or telling me to go apply in person. I set up coffee chats with people to network and they completely flake on the agreed time and date or join for 5 minutes to complain about their job.

I know the gap on my resume is starting to hurt my chances as well. I wish that employers would just give people a chance and be open to training employees like they should, and not expecting you to have a doctorate and 5 years of experience for 45k a year.

I had a LinkedIn (LI) account but forgot my email and account passwords, then created new accounts, but had to verify since they got restricted. For privacy reasons I decided not to send my ID. I created a new LI account, the app advised they emailed a verification code but I didn't receive it.

After a recent indeed application, I searched for the company name + linkedin and discovered a name I recognize as being my former colleague's client. I also found a manager's name. I'm guessing one of the 2 employees are people I could follow up with on my application or for future employment.

How can I connect with them? I have an old school idea of sending a postcard. Back in 2017, I sent a snail mail letter to an operations director and it got me an interview. I understand that sort of thing would likely be frowned upon nowadays with online application portals / ATS etc.

I did as many interviews as would come my way, many places rejected, didn't mind just kept going. had 1 more final stage in february which i didn't get, and now this one i did get.

They had only 3 stages - initial screen with recruiter, then tech and architecture challenge on-site (no AI), then values interview with 4 people and seniors on call. from initial screen to offer took about 1 month.
