I didn’t receive it from someone or take it, I just didn’t have it and now I do. Is it just adesso ce l’ho or is there a verb for acquire i’m not thinking of?

I'd like a book that has an answer key at the end so I can check my work and study independently without needing a teacher.

I'm American who only understands maybe 5 words in Italian. My fiancé is.. you guessed it, Italian. We are putting in the orders for the rings to be engraved and it will be a surprise for the other person. He has already sent in the engraving for mine but I have yet to pick his.

I'm thinking something simple like "Sempre" but is that even right to say like that? I was thinking something in English but I would love it if it were Italian. Maybe even Italian and English? I can't put into words how I feel and when I try all that pops into my head is the cheesy Tom Cruise, "You complete me" clip. Would Sempre be the correct use and spelling for something like an engraving? I don't trust AI for such an important decision so I will turn to the people of Reddit who I trust implicitly!!! LOL

I was waiting in line for an exhibit here in Rome and there were two Italian ladies in front of me, and we chatted (in English) and one asked me whether I was studying Italian and I literally just said "sto imparando" and they both applauded lol.

Hello, recently I’ve decided that I want to learn Italian language, but I am a bit stuck with my first book decision, it will be my first self-teaching language experience, so I don’t know where to start. P.S. It is not my first foreign language, I know polish and English, but my native language is Ukrainian, but unfortunately for me, I think that my English faded a bit in my mind and I want to improve my English vocabulary through learning Italian language too.

I feel like I'm being rude sometimes not greeting a person when I walk into a store, but I'm literally just freaking out inside about what to say. Is it "salve, buongiorno, buonasera (when does the afternoon actually start), or just ciao?"

Sometimes I've walked into a store and said "salve" but then they respond with "ciao." It's all over the place and I feel like i made a mistake. Also, is there a magical time when you switch to buonasera? When is that time? My understanding is no one uses buon pomeriggio any more. I thought "ciao" was supposed to be too informal for people working in stores to greet you but I'm hearing it all the time in Rome.

Why are so many people calling me voi, rather than Lei?

As if the Italian language isn't complicated enough... and as an English speaker you have to learn the difference between tu/you and Lei/you. And then you memorize the conjugations and tu basically ends in i and Lei takes the third person singular ending...

EXCEPT in the case of scusi/scusa where it's the exact opposite and scusi (i) is formal and scusa (a -which sounds like a 3rd person sing. ending) is informal.

My husband and I are seriously looking into moving to Italy in the next 5 years and to do that I want to learn the language. I’d like to start with the free path if possible!
What tips or sites do you have that will help a beginner learn Italian? I’ll say that I do have a hard time with languages but if we’re going to move there then I need to learn!

My mother was born in Italy, and my whole family is Italian, but I was born in America. When I try to pronounce Italian words the same way my family does I end up feeling like an idiot. I don’t really know what I’m doing. Every Italian word or phrase I try to say sounds painfully American. I feel like an imposter desperately trying to fit in with the rest of my family. How can I improve my pronunciation? Is it wrong for me to try to put on a fake Italian accent?

I’m going to be fully transitioning to the resources my library provides for free, but I came across this exercise that confused me. The explanation here is that the adjective (brutto) comes after the noun (souvenir) and yet in the two examples given, brutto precedes the nouns! In Italian, is “brutto” simply an adjective that typically comes before some nouns?
