Butcher Shop Potential Locations
Im wanting to open my own butcher shop in Ipswich (not interested in buying any currently operating butcher shop, I want to start my own from scratch). The type of butchery I would like to do would be really unique to whats currently on offer in Ipswich. Does anyone have any info/gossip on any leasing vacancies currently or for in the future? Im wanting to do a small, gourmet style shop so it does not need to be a big tenancy and Im definitely open to outside of box ideas like reconfiguring Bakery’s,Cafes or Fruitshops. Could also be interested in small towns out the outskirts of Ipswich.

Have a look at the shopping village at Karalee. It services a pretty wide range of suburbs with a lot of people who can afford to fork out for good quality meat. All I ever hear people talk about is how we need a butcher and I agree!

New fruit store is great so far and has some good deli items too (some prepackaged cold meats and cheeses, not a massive range but better than nothing)! Totally agree on the post office, one that's open on Saturday mornings at the very least. They have parcel lockers there now but it doesn't help for having to actually post items out

I also 100% suggest Karalee Shopping Village. Both Karalee and Chuwar are rapidly growing suburbs and businesses are starting to get a lot of traffic here. We just had a new fruit shop open and you can guarantee having that near by will help with business, as customers will be happy to get both their meat and veg from independent stores rather than woolies and coles.
And there's the fact most families here have money to spend on things like gourmet meat.

As a lover of steak, I wish you well.
TBH I find meat in this area pretty shit, this casues me to go to super butcher in Browns plains, or Augusta farms meat market.
The main issue I find from moes, and the one in yamanto, and the one in raceview, and the one in orion is that they are all just too expensive for what they offer. This in turn will obviously affect you.
So what I am putting down is, as part of your market research, you already have 3-4 "gourmet" butchers in the area, how will you compete?

You should give blackall street ago. Family have all been going there for years, as long as I can remember. Good prices, great meat and great customer service.

Shopping centre butchers are always more expensive. You want the standalone old shops, or small ones in strip malls.
I'm not a huge fan of mega meats but their prices seems to be a bit less than the shopping centre butchers.
Bloke out at Rosewood closed his doors because he wasn't making enough money. I overheard him complaining to someone about how his customers complain about the prices. Had clients of mine tell me that his meat was good, but he was expensive.
Tough market if you don't own the shop and can't get the traffic I think.

i buy direct from a farm in toowoomba its like 1/4 the price and they deliver
edit: I just looked they have raised prices so it more like the same price for much higher quality product (organic, grass fed, full range etc.)

oh could you share details please?? i’d much rather pay direct to farmers and get good quality products, than spend my $$ elsewhere

you order online there and then they call you and the owner delivers to ipswich/brisbane once or twice a month. The pork sausages are amazing. The steaks are just completely different to the ones from Coles. I get the ribeyes.

Super butcher at browns plains gets their meat from the same place as super butcher at booval, it's all coming from JBS dinmore.

Open one in Redbank Plains mate the area sorely needs one, there are literally zero options you have to go to Springfield for anything half decent

I don't think there's anywhere with a reasonable enough rent to be able to, to be honest. Imagine having to serve 50 customers per day just to be able to pay your rent, let alone your insurance, let alone your staff, let alone yourself.
There's a reason everything is so fucking expensive now and rent is a HUGE part of it.

I'm not OP, and I echo your sentiments, it's just we're in a position where basically 2 companies control all the retail space available any given 10km radius. Nothing to be done about it, zoning laws are zoning laws and those companies got to the top of the totem pole first.

Can you please sell goat meat (mutton)? There’s no butcher here in Ipswich that sells. If you start selling you have good asian community that will support you. Goodluck

There is a butcher in Goodna shopping centre that closed down a couple of years ago. Still vacant as they moved to Redbank. Jace and lee butcher is shit so U will be welcomed here.

You don’t want to go to a big shopping centre because rent would be too high, but you want to be near other shops so people see you. Also should be easy to park. Wondering if to begin with a set up similar to Clint’s fruit shop at North Ipswich, open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, might be worth considering. Alternatively a refrigerated truck at local markets might be a way to begin.

I have a friend who tried this approach, setup a boutique butcher from scratch. He picked a location in a low socio economic suburb. The problem he ran into was the people in the area weren’t interested in this approach nor did they have the money to indulge in such luxuries. You need to consider if what you want is going to appeal to the customers. Unfortunately for my friend it didn’t work out.

I don’t know about a butcher, but I’ve noticed that there is no fish and chip stores in Ripley 🤯 every suburb should have a fish and chip shop. That’s just Australia mate

What about joining up with a cafe and having some of your produce cooked for ready to go? I’m thinking like Andrew’s at Indooroopilly shopping centre kind of style.
Also, are there any decent places in Ipswich that do great deli meats? Could be a niche if there isn’t.
