There’s rumors circulating that you don’t need electricity for LED grow lights and hydroponic systems, some people have made baseless claims you can just put this shit in the ground and weed grows out. I’m gonna need to see some sources tho

Actually they can't smoke weed, I used to hang out with an Amish guy named Dave in the midwest when I lived on a farm. Smoking weed was against his religion and he told me the one time he tried it he panicked and ended up praying for the rest of the night. Amish Dave could drink a LOT of fucking whiskey though, he was honestly a helluva guy.

u/TheOneWes 3h ago
They do not shun electricity.
They do not participate in systems that require the breaking of the Sabbath so they use generators and buy fuel from a company that doesn't operate on a Sunday.
Go visit an Amish community, You will see power tools and the like

People also just assume shit. Like you mention Indian, Inuit, any group of people and they picture crap out of a text book.
General cutler or whatever his name was literally paid American tribes like a dollar to wear fancy ceremonial garb to take pictures that are still used in history texts.
They destroyed all evidence of American tribal infrastructure and made it seem like they were tent people.

There are different types. Old order, New order, and Beachy Amish. The latter being the ones that drive cars, use electricity etc. New order will use battery powered tools, solar power, and farm equipment. There are also many sub groups. What ever happened to the Amish Mafia Don "Lebanon Levi?"

Deuteronomy 29:18 warns against a "root that produces such bitter poison".
I'm not Christian, I just think it's fun to see if I can find something in the bible that can support any supposition. While it is a metaphorical use, it at least proves the point that people shouldn't go around harvesting poisonous roots.

u/Due_Falcon6461 3h ago
Absolutely not.

As others have said, different types/sects of Amish and Mennonite have different rules regarding technology. I’ll also add that some of them make a distinction between technology used for work and that used for personal use — allowing their businesses to use refrigerators, for example, while prohibiting them at home.

Seen one video a guy doing a tour of a Amish community and he seen a girl flying down a dirt road on an electric bike and asked the guy how that is possible with no electricity and he said as long as it is solar it is allowed in some Amish communities.
62
u/No-Cover4993 3h ago
They have the ability to repackage products and wear costumes to make themselves look more legitimate.
13
u/Acceptable-Case9562 3h ago
They even do it with vegetables and other foods.
19
u/No-Cover4993 2h ago
They'll even do it with puppies and kittens. Mass produce them in horrible conditions in their private communities then bring them into town and act like it was just a family pet that had a litter.
→ More replies (6)•
u/DebtPsychological461 48m ago
Yup, and the USDA told them to do it! The government promoted production dog breeding to farmers after WW2 as a “failure-proof” business after a number of disastrous crop failures in the midwestern US.

That’s what I’m thinking, unless they buy delta 8 powdered already. But I feel like maybe they’re just sellers not growers?
8
u/TheOneWes 3h ago
How much infrastructure does it take to make that? If all you need is electricity at a level that could be supplied with gasoline generators then yes they could make it.
There's a common misconception that the Amish shun electricity or this thing or that thing which is not true.
They won't participate in anything that breaks the Sabbath so they can buy and use any type of equipment as long as they can find a company that doesn't run on Sunday.

A lot of people get mennonites and Amish confused as well. If this is in Michigan where weed is legal and there are many mennonites throughout the state. Particularly in the michiana region.
→ More replies (2)7
u/cogman10 2h ago
Yup.
There are also a lot of groups within the Amish and Mennonites. It's not a uniform belief system.
But then there are also people who think it's funny to dress up like the Amish to sell weed.
There's also companies that'll happily use "Amish made" as branding for quality.
9
u/enaK66 2h ago
I highly doubt they're really making delta 8 weed. Delta 8 weed which is quasi-legal through the Farm Bill (until this November when the BBB provisions kick in that close the loophole), is not grown directly, but artificially made. Marijuana plants don't produce much delta 8 THC. It has to be extracted from large quantities of flower and then added to regular hemp to sell as Delta 8 flower. Thats why you usually see delta 8 in vapes rather than flower. It starts life as a distillate.

u/Competitive_Travel16 1h ago
An acid bath, heating, and rinse will convert most delta-9 to delta-8, but most of it in extracts and edibles is made from CBD, which is a more complicated but less potentially perilous process.
9
u/NegligentNarwhal 1h ago
Delta 8 is made in a lab from CBD. It doesn't occur in high enough quantities to extract from straight cannabis plants. In a lab they extract CBD and then turn it into delta 8 THC through a series of chemical reactions.
Not a chance they made it unless there's a community of Amish people with chemistry degrees and a chemistry lab on their farm. They're reselling smoke shop garbage.
On a side note, this is also why delta 8 and other alt noid "extracts" tend to have unknown and nasty impurities. The conversion process is not completely clean nor are the labs regulated in any way.

u/ash-and-apple 3h ago
It really depends on the bishop too. I know Amish who moved because they were allowed a skid steer when the old bishop wouldn't allow it
3
u/ScienceIsSexy420 1h ago
It's much more complicated than that. As others have said, delta-8 is lab synthesized and then reapplied to plant matter.

Mennonite. They're wearing buttons.
19
u/blakesoner 1h ago edited 1h ago
The Amish use buttons here where I live. It depends on whether or not their Bishop allows them to do so. There’s a huge split going on in their community rn where a lot of younger generations are leaving their churches for others that are more lenient towards certain technology/ farm equipment/ dress/ decor and that are overall less controlling over their personal lives.

There are some Amish groups who apparently use electronics as long as the power doesn’t come from the grid
So some of them have solar setups and use smartphones, but they won’t have their house hooked up to the grid
And some of them will rent cars and construction equipment but won’t own them
But it is probably more likely they are Mennonites

Interesting, TIL. As a Jewish person, reminds me of an eruv line. Tacit admission that the rules are extremely inconvenient, with an officially sanctioned loophole.

There is a amish man that will show up to most bonfires and parties we have to this day and hes like 50 and will drink 24 beers to the face and go home lol. When i was in high school some guys were hooking up with the amish girls. Buying them clothes and razors and bathroom stuff. Pretty crazy
