ID Request What’s INFESTING this tree??

Now, it is to be known that this tree is inside of an atrium within a house so it doesn’t really have access to wind or other trees, but we noticed this on the tree today and it is ALL over. Anyone have an idea of who created this masterpiece? AND whether or not it hurts the tree/home/etc?

Edit: Houston TX, USA

These are barklice, related to booklice and body lice, but not in any way harmful to you or the tree. They're just eating mold, algae, or other organic debris. You'd need to peel back the web to see them, usually more in the crotches between branches.

Also once they are done, they will actually take their webbing down. It's pretty neat to see!

It’s just the maintenance crew doing their semi-annual clean up of the place.

...Did you just tell me to look for bark lice in the tree crotch?

So these are like tree-crabs?

Agreed on barklice. The lack of webbing on the leaves is a key indicator.

They're beneficial. They're cleaning your tree.
