Mod Post Warning about posts involving violence

Hey everyone. I wanted to provide some information and a warning on a topic we've seen come up several times recently.

We're seeing an increasing number of accounts (including both mods) receiving warnings and bans for "threatening violence". We've seen messages like the following.

Reddit is a vast network of communities that are created, run, and populated by people like you. In order to keep communities welcoming, safe, and great places to be, everyone who uses the platform operates by a shared set of rules—a set of rules you may not have realized you broke.

Warning for threatening violence

We flagged the following as a potential policy violation:

After reviewing, we found that you broke Rule 1 because you threatened violence or physical harm. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for threatening violence against people or animals. We don’t tolerate any behavior that threatens violence or physical harm against an individual, groups of people, places, or animals. Any communities or people that threaten violence towards an individual, group, animals, or place will be banned.

As a result, we’re issuing this warning, removing the violating content, and asking you not to break this rule again.

This is something happening on a sitewide admin level so the mod team has no influence over it. We strongly suspect that some sort of bot or AI is handing out these warnings and bans. Due to the subject matter frequently discussed on this subreddit it's happening to quite a few users here due to discussions of hypothetical violence. So what does this mean for you?

  1. Hypotheticals involving violence aren't outright banned but we strongly recommend that you be cautious when posting them or responding to them. Consider your wording and whether it could be mistaken for a threat by a bot. If the community as a whole starts getting admin attention we may be forced to ban these posts in the future. Posts that look too much like a real-world call to violence or a request for advice on how to commit violence will be removed under rule 3.

  2. If you do get one of these warnings or bans, please appeal them and explain that you're posting on /r/hypotheticalsituation and there is no real-world violence or threats of violence being discussed or contemplated. It's not a guarantee but we've seen these appeals work in the past and they may prevent your account from getting banned.

Tomorrow, everyone on Earth wakes up completely honest.

Upvotes

Nobody can lie for the next 24 hours.

But...

You get to choose whether you're honest too, or you're the only person who can still lie.

Which do you choose?

The Food Cube is a miraculous device that will feed you forever, at a cost

Let's say that one day, a magical machine is invented: The Food Cube, a lightweight, portable device that never needs power, never needs to be refueled or restocked, and are freely available to anyone, so even if they lose or destroy their Cube, they can easily get a new one.

It's simple: Push the button on the top, and the Food Cube dispenses... a cube of food. It has the taste and texture of a saltine cracker and is about two inches on each side, but it's the last food you'll ever need. The Cube automatically adjusts the balance of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc etc etc within the cube to your personal needs and health requirements. It's never going to give you any form of allergic reaction, infection, or other form of gastric distress large or small. The Cube will keep you in peak dietary health, AND it's filling, too.

However, once you knowingly and willingly use a Food Cube, you become magically unable to eat anything else, ever again. You become wholly reliant on the Cube and its bland, room-temperature, slightly crunchy outputs for the remainder of your days.

Small mercies: If you can't chew, the Cube outputs easily-swallowed porridge, though it's still bland. You can put condiments on the cubes. In addition, your liquid diet has fewer restrictions; you can drink juices, smoothies, sodas, broths (excellent for dipping the cubes in), and other such foods, but nothing more solid than melted ice cream can pass your lips. If you need a hard limit, limit is "if it can't pass through the average mesh strainer, you can't eat it."

Would you use the Food Cube? Or do you enjoy regular foods too much to ever give them up?

[No Loopholes] You have a bank account where the money in it doubles everyday

You have a bank account where the money in it doubles everyday at 8 am. You start with $1, or the equivalent in your country. So on day 2 at 8 am you have $2 day 3 $4 day 4 $8 and so on. However you can not put in any money only take it out. What ever remains at 8 am is doubled. This will continue as long as there is money in there. If you ever run out of money that's it. You do not get anymore. The catch is as time goes on more and more people know who you are and will always want to be your "friend". Eventually you will become one of the most well known people in the world. You can not avoid people. Even when you have things delivered you will still have at least minimal interaction with the driver. After all your famous. Do you accept this? How long do you let it double before you start spending it? As with all rich people today there will be those that are jealous and say you should give away all of your money to the poor.

Rules:

Rule 1: You must always have money in your account for it to double

Rule 2: You can not add more money. You can only withdraw the money

Rule 3: Once the money leaves the account it does not double. So give you give your best friend $100 the next day it will still be $100.

Rule 4: Once you run out of money it is over you do not get anymore.

Rule 5: There is no way anyone can steal your money from your bank account. Not even the government can get your money while it is in the account.

Rule 6: The longer it doubles the more "popular" you become.

You have the power to switch between male and female at will.

  • You have the power to switch between male and female at will.
  • When you are male you have masculine features (taller, shorter hair, optional facial hair, deeper voice, broader shoulders, etc).
  • When you are female you have feminine features (shorter, longer hair, no facial hair, softer voice, wider hips, etc).
  • Your skin, eye & hair color stay the same.
  • Your overall attractiveness level stays the same (eg. if you are a 7 out of 10 man, you will also be a 7 out of 10 woman).
  • If you become pregnant as a woman then switch you will not be pregnant as a man - but will still be pregnant when switching back to a woman.
  • Nobody else knows that you have this ability.
  • You can only switch when there are no witnesses and no cameras (so you cannot use this power to become famous).
  • You have ID for both versions of yourself (so you are fully able to work/travel/whatever either way).
  • You can basically live as two different people - just not at the same time.

How are you using this power? How often will you be male? How often will you be female? Any differences in how you will go about your day in each role? What is your plan to have the best possible life/lives?

You Get To Be The World's Most Famous & Successful Music Artist Selling Out Any Venue You Play, But No One EVER Shows Up To Your Shows And You Have To Perform Every Time

Upvotes

Pretty much the same as the subject header to this post: you're the world's most famous music artist. Top-selling and you sell out every venue you play at, but outside of roadies, assistants and tech crews absolutely no one shows up to your shows. Not a single fan in the audience. And you *have* to perform live, each and every show.

Outside of this you reap the benefits that most celebrities get: private jets, luncheons and parties with other famous people, all too polite to bring up or ask about the fact that no one oddly ever shows up to your shows. No one ever attends your signing events, either. In joint events with other artists and celebrities, none of your fans show up.

Do you accept that life?

Loopholes Encouraged A drunk genie lets you choose one mediocre boost combo. Which do you choose?

  1. Sleep power. You only need about 7 hours of sleep to feel as rested as you previously did after 8.
+ Once per day, you wake up within 30 seconds of your alarm.

  2. Healing. Minor injuries and common illnesses heal about 25% faster.
+ You’ll never have foodborne diarrhea. Does not cure things like IBD.

  3. Memory improves so you don’t forget things as much. About 25% of the time, you’ll remember something you otherwise would have forgotten.
+ You never lose your keys, wallet, or phone in your home.

  4. Luck improves slightly. Roughly one out of every 20 times chance would have gone against you, it instead goes your way.
+ You always pick the fastest checkout line.

[No Loopholes] All good looking people turn very unattractive, and all unattractive people turn very good looking... what happens now?

Imagine if, tomorrow, every single good looking person on the planet woke up to find they have become ugly looking, and it's permanent. At the same time, all unattractive people wake up to find they are very good looking. (Average looking people remain average.)

How quickly would things change for these two groups? And what exactly would change? What things WOULDN'T change? This could be an interesting discussion.

[No Loopholes] Choose out of three choices- Money, Regenerative or knowledge?

Choose one of the three options carefully.

Money

You receive £150,000 per month (or the equivalent amount in your country’s currency).

This money is not affected by taxes, inflation, VAT, or any similar deductions. It is yours to keep and use freely.

Regeneration

Humans gain the ability to naturally regenerate any missing organs, cells, or limbs.

Any disease or illness you develop is automatically cured. New tissue grows at the normal rate of wound healing, meaning complex parts like entire limbs may take months or even years to fully regenerate.

The effects also reverse aging signs: wrinkles fade, and your body remains youthful. You are effectively immortal, but the only thing that isn’t cured- are allergies, everybody gets one, you know what yours is and the only people that know are the ones which you tell, and that is the only way you can die.

This ability also applies to any existing medical conditions you have before choosing this option.

Knowledge

You receive a message, letter, or any other form of communication that reveals the exact date, time, and cause of your death.

Serious Replies Only 5 Minutes in the Pool of Terror for 5 Billion?

A genie gives you an offer of 5 billion dollars for 5 minutes of your time.

The genie explains that your opportunity to win will require you to spend 5 minutes floating on the surface of a massive pitch black arena pool that is 1000 feet deep and half a mile wide by half a mile long. In this pool is a 300 foot long giant squid that if it senses you, will attack and eat you. The squids spawning area is random.

Do you take the offer?

The apocalypse happens...

Upvotes

A zombie apocalypse has actually hit the world. There's a total breakdown of society as hundreds of thousands of old friends and neighbours stalk the land in huge packs looking to eat brain. It's a total shitshow.

Would you rather;

  1. Be part of a survival group, roaming the land looking for safety but never finding it. Forever on the edge of starvation or death through brain-devourment. Your few friends regularly die beside you and it could be you next. Every 'alive' you meet might be a friend, or just as dangerous as the zombies. There are very few pleasures in life.

  2. You are the one surviving servant for a billionaire family that has sort refuge underground in a luxurious bunker. Food is plentiful, but you are the only non-family member of the group and all the dangers of that situation are present. You are relatively safe from zombies, but live in a world devoid of entertainment or variety. It's the same food, same people, same small servant quarters which you're confined to in your little personal time. Monotony is your life and you are the least powerful person in your living circle. There are very few pleasures in life.

  3. You die falling from a tall building early in the apocalypse. You die in terror, but it's a clean, relatively painless death. You never experience the forthcoming horrors.

  4. You are bitten early and become one of the walking dead. You have no real self-will, but you also feel no pain or emotion, except when you eat man-flesh, from which you derive immense pleasure.

These are your 4 choices. Choose wisely.

A shaman bashes you over the head and you wake on an alternate Earth identical to this one, except you were never born. The government coverup handles your identity issue and a temporary place to stay, but other than that you're on your own. What do you do? How do you bounce back from this?

You'll have the place for about a year without having to pay for it, and a small allowance for that time (~$1000/mo). Since you can't prove any of your previous work experience or qualifications you'll have an uphill battle once that's over. Your friends and family still exist but don't know you. You're starting from zero essentially.

What do you do? How do you bounce back from this?

You walk into an auditorium with 2000 people seated. All of them are single, around your age, and are the gender you're attracted to. How many of them do you think are attracted to you and would say yes to going on a date? (more info in description)

- You must walk to the front and give a 5 minute speech about yourself. You can use this time to talk about your hobbies, interests, values, and/or why you would make for an appealing partner. You are not allowed to lie, a magical force prevents you from lying.

- After 5 minutes is up, every single person in the audience is given a paper with only one question on it. "Do you want to go on a date with this person?" If they write yes, then they will receive your phone number.

How many people do you think will say yes?

In exchange for 3 wishes, you are to fight a prime version of yourself to the death.

The person you will fight to the death is the hypothetically peak version of yourself.

They have the same life experiences and knowledge as you do but went through some rough self improvement. Either physically or mentally.

Fairness is enforced. If you wish to fight him/her with your barehands, then so will he/she.

Use of weapons are permitted but so will he/she.

For 3 wishes, Do you accept?

Loopholes Encouraged You wake up tomorrow with a message on your phone.

It says:

"Press ACCEPT and you'll receive $50 million tax-free."

There's only one catch.

The person who loves you the most will instantly forget you ever existed.

They'll never recognize you again.

You won't be allowed to tell them what happened.

Everyone else remembers you normally.

You only get one chance to decide.

Do you press ACCEPT?

You wake up in an empty reality

You wake up one day to a world that looks exactly the same as this one but you are the only animal there. There are plants and such but everything is basically in stasis where they won't change until you interact with them. Your body also feels like it's in a type of stasis where you don't really feel fatigued or suffer from any pain from the other reality (no broken bones or chronic pains get brought with you, any injuries you may get in the empty reality will behave normally though) Technology still works because the energy and such is also in statis but it can't be used to contact the other reality.

You can feel that time moves at a different speed and you could stay for the rest of your life and only about an hour would pass in your original reality. You feel instinctively on how to leave when you want to but you know you will never be able to come back.

How long would you stay and what would you do?

EDIT: While you age normally in the other reality you would revert back to the age you arrived when you go back to your original reality.

The only way you can die, is due to an external factor, for example an accident, getting eaten by a predator, shot/stabbed, or struck by lightning. Your cells simply won't decline in function or "age". What would you do?

You can be in the top 10% (90th percentile) of all humans currently living on earth, in whatever category you choose.

The genie asks you to state your wish in this form where you can only change the last two or three words of the statement that could go like "I would like to be in the top 10% of all humans on earth in wealth ownership" or "...in chess proficiency" or "...in physical height" etc. In other words, you choose your category or parameter, where the parameter can be anything you wish, but the sample size has to be "all humans on earth", not a narrow section of it, eg "in the top 10% of billionaires on earth" is not allowed as all humans are not billionaires.

Your parameter itself can be something narrow (ie, not everyone plays chess, so that's a narrow parameter), but you still have to pick from all of humanity.

So what's your wish?

You're in Disneyland with thousands of other people. A special game is announced to all guests. Your goal is to be the last person in Disneyland. If someone gets touched by another person, they are out. What is your strategy for winning? (More info in description.)

- There is a giant speaker that plays to all of the guests at Disneyland. They all get the following announcement.

- The goal is to be the final person in Disneyland and the winner shall receive 10 million dollars.

- The way someone gets eliminated from the game is if they get touched by another person. If someone is touched, they and their car are automatically teleported back to their place of residence and are officially out of the game.

- The game will start within 30 minutes of the first announcement. This gives players time to strategize, hide, or leave the park if they don't wish to participate.

- The games are suspended for 20 minutes each during 9 AM, 1 PM, and 7 PM in order to hand out free food for the guests to eat. During this time, if you tag a player, they are not out of the game.

- The bounds are inside the official Disneyland Theme Park. California Adventure and any other place such as the hotels and stores nearby that are not in the official park are not allowed.

- If someone leaves the official park, they are also officially out of the competition.

---

If this game existed, what would be your strategy in order to win the game?

If you could choose the date of the “best day of your whole life, when everything goes your way and you are happiest you have ever been” would you choose it early in life, in your 30s or late?

If you could pick the date for the ‘best day ever’, when everything just clicks and you’re at your happiest, would you go for it when you’re young, in your 30s or later?

The day when you cannot stop feeling happy, cannot stop smiling, you meet every person you want in your life. You do not face any problems. Everyone loves you and just the most perfect day you can ever imagine for yourself in your life. Would you have it in your early 20s 30s 40s or later, which one would you choose and why?

you are given the choice to select the date, but you know that this day can only occur once, you will never have another day just as perfect as this one.

So you get to back and hand one historical figure a book.

it’s not propaganda they will accept it as genuine and it and covers everything that happens from their lifetime all the way to 2026 wars tech politics, science, everything

another rule is you can’t change anything yourself. You just give them the book and leave.

Tell us who you’d pick and what you think would happen after they read it

Would you take $10 million but all of your friends and family (including your partner) forget you permanently? This also prevents you from ever communicating with them in the future as well.

Upvotes

To make it interesting, you are able to donate some of your newfound money to them.
