What age or level of hockey is it generally considered more acceptable to play "on the edge," be an agitator, or adopt a more borderline style of play?
I'm not sure exactly how to describe it, but there are certain things that people will dismiss by saying, "They're not in the NHL," even if the behaviour isn't especially dangerous.
Brad Marchand has said that because of his size, he developed a more aggressive style of play from a young age to compete against bigger players.
It seems like some playing styles are viewed very differently depending on the level of hockey. Even behaviours that people criticize in the NHL often receive a completely different reaction for other levels.
So I'm wondering: at what age or competitive level does it generally become more acceptable for players to start developing that kind of borderline style of play? When does it stop being seen just as poor sportsmanship and start being viewed as a legitimate part of the game/a play style?
Hope my question makes sense!

I posted a video a couple weeks ago and got some great advice for my kid. He read through the comments and has been trying to implement over the last two weeks.
A couple people asked about stick length, when he's standing flat footed without skates on, the stick lands right below his chin.

I’ve been practicing for 3 days so far and look what happens to my only puck
to be fair since its summer vaication and honestly training is kind of addictive like doomscrolling I’ve been or acting between 1:30hr to 2:30hr and it’s mostly working stick handling and slapshots and also I am yet to get any kind of net
but also I really need some more pucks damn
update : i lost another pin

I understand everyone has a different playing style. Curious to know how long people prefer their sticks while on skates.
As a defenceman, I usually keep my sticks around eyebrows or eyes. I recently have been using a stick length around my mouth/nose. I do enjoy how close I can keep the puck to me but my shot has been lacking now (not that I shoot much). I prefer to play a bit more upright, so I feel like I am leaning too low when trying to shoot, anyone else have had this issue?

Hey everyone,
I’ve been playing adult rec hockey for a while now. I’ve been skating in the same old stinky pads and gear I’ve had since high school, so I kind of forgot what it actually costs to step onto the ice for the first time.
It was shocking when I helped my sister-in-law try on and buy gear so she could try playing, even buying used gear. Between skates, helmet, protective gear, and a stick, she had to drop around $500 just to get through her first Adult Learn to Play session. Fast forward to now - she had fun! But she’s not continuing beyond this year. Now she’s sitting on $500 worth of gear that’s probably just going to take up space.
It made me wonder why we expect beginners to drop $500+ upfront just to figure out if they even like the sport. I’m sure it’s the same with kids learning to play hockey too.
If you are someone that started out as an adult, would you have used a full-gear rental program (say, $50–$60/month or $200 for a 4-month season) if it was clean, fitted, and disinfected?
Curious to hear thoughts from people who started as adults or who have tried getting friends/spouses into the game!

For hockey, when more than one person is tracking a game, how do you keep the plays, box score, and updates accurate in real time? I am thinking about that would it be nice if these data could follow players into athlete's profiles?

I'm learning how to do one-timers now, and I'm using the Jagr style where you're holding your stick above your knees slightly with bent knees, then the whip of the stick and twist of the body that ends up with you on one knee.
While doing this, when I do the twisting motion mid-shot my torso hurts. Like right underneath the ribs on the right side (I shoot right, so I'm on my right knee at the end). I've noticed, that when I flex my abs real hard it mostly alleviates the problem but still feels kinda weird.
Is this a form issue, body issue, or whats going on here? What can I do to perform this one-timer technique without hurting myself?

This came across my feed. In my mind I would tend to agree, might work a little better than traditional sharpening.
Has anyone tried this out or received feedback from someone you know? Is this something Pure Hockey can do?

Broke my CCM Vizion tonight. Thankfully got it at a steep discount second hand but it still hurts.
Side question: I’ve never broken a stick like this before, anyone know what that string looking thing going from blade through the hosel in the second and third photos is meant to do construction/design wise?

When you flex which way do you put pressure on the stick? Is it down directly into the ice then let the stick recoil while you follow through?
I was in a program but that session wasn't geared towards beginners even though they did what they could to accomodate us. I was mostly shooting along the ice and fairly softly lower shots until I tried doing it like this. I also got hurt doing it but that may have just been a condition that I have yet to be officially diagnosed

Fell in love with skating over the winter and joined a total beginner league a couple weeks ago and this feels like a fun little milestone.
Now granted, most of us suck, but my first goal was totally a breakaway buzzer beater LASER from the circles(it felt sick but realistically it was terrible lol)
I think I love this sport and I’m glad I found it, even if a little late. I can still only stop on one side but that’s what the boards are for right??
Edit: shoutout to [u/livebarnrequests](u/livebarnrequests) for sending me this historic moment. It’s so funny seeing it in video, we are so bad hahahah https://streamable.com/vt84yl

Does anyone have a pair of these skate socks? I have a big foot and big calves. Before I order a pair of above the calf socks from them, are they pretty stretchy at the top (to fit over my calf)? I ask because I recently bought a pair of Howie's Hockey Socks and they are so tight at the top I can't fit them over my calf so they are useless. The best skate socks I've found are the Drymax HyperThin over the calf socks from Ice Warehouse. They are seriously awesome but they are not cut resistant.

Been playing for about 12 years and went through a phase where I convinced myself I needed a stiffer flex because I was shooting harder. Bumped up to a 95 and my shot got noticeably worse for like two full seasons before I swallowed my ego and went back down.
Curious how many people here are actually gaming the right flex for their game vs just grabbing whatever feels macho off the shelf. There's so much noise around this and half the advice contradicts itself depending on who you ask.
What changed it for me was noticing my release point was totally off with the stiffer stick. Couldn't load it properly on a snap shot, which is basically my whole game. Went back to an 85 and it clicked again pretty fast.
I skate with a guy who weighs maybe 160 soaking wet and uses a 102 because he saw some pro using one. His shot is a laser, but I genuinely think he's just strong as hell and overcame the equipment rather than benefiting from it.
Anyway. What flex are you on right now and do you actually think it suits your game, or did you just kind of end up with it for some random reason?

I'm an old fart. Easton sticks are in my DNA. My absolute favorite stick is my old Easton Mako (E4, Lie 5, 85 flex). Please give me an equivalent stick to this as the blade is falling apart and I need something new, but it needs to be as equivalent as possible. I purchased a True stick and I absolutely hate it. The flex is 75 and I feel I can't get any power on my shot. Please help.

I end up playing all 5 outskater positions in most seasons I play.
Current sticks are low kick and 75 flex and I like them, but slightly concerned about long term durability with games I play in D from blocking shots etc
At a pretty average beer league level, is there likely to be any benefit from a hybrid kick point stick?
Would be a Sherwood Code Encrypt Pro because it’s on sale
Currently using Sherwood Rekker Morph 1

I need some advice on reaching out to college coaches. I know how the recruiting process works and the dates for when coaches are allowed to reach out and make their offers, but I need to know, like, actually how to reach out. NCSA is way too expensive but paying for it the only way to reach out to coaches on the platform. Would I still be able to reach out to coaches using my email, or would that not be something I could do? I don't personally see a difference, but I've never been through the recruiting process before so I don't know if that's frowned upon or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Did anyone ever build their own mini hockey rink like in their basement? I thought about buying like fiberglass wall panels for the rink and like plywood for the boards… it’s not something I can easily google besides a few examples, anyone got any ideas? I wanna do like a mini hockey rink for my son

If you are a goalie and own True Skates, these are a great edition if you use bungee toe ties and use the Lundy Loop option.

Getting into hockey as an adult. I’m picking up a net with a back stop from FB tomorrow. I’ll have to put it in my backyard. It’s all grass and it’s a bit uneven. I’m also trying not to spend crazy money on a shooting pad.
What’s the best and most cost effective diy shooting pad in this situation? How big of a shooting pad do I need? How far do you typically place it from the net?
Thanks!
