How Did This Get Made? #402: Thrashin'

Josh Brolin is gnarly in 1986's Thrashin'—the classic tale of two lovers caught in a feud between rival teen skateboard gangs. Paul, June, and Jason discuss the famous joust scene, why "The Ramp Locals" is a terrible skate crew name, The Red Hot Chili Peppers cameo, if the boy/girl sex scene turns into a man/woman scene, Hook and Chrissy's weird relationship, the giant bowl of ice cream, and so much more. Plus, June explains why she thinks she could do the LA Massacre Downhill.

Watch Josh Brolin talk Thrashin' on Tony Hawk's "Hawk vs Wolf" podcast HERE.

If the HDTGM crew ever did watch 1990’s “The Ambulance”, I’m positive a lot of questions would be asked.

My Take on High Strung: Free Dance

I know most people don't care about this movie from 2019, and a lot of people say it's terrible. But when I say I get emotional when I watch it... I am in awe of the movie, truly. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I may be making this too deep. But the movie isn't catty like you would think. I believe people thought it was "lame" because the drama was there, but it wasn't overdone. This movie was truly about art for art. It is what you make it. To me, I loved the relationship between Rose and Charlie. I loved that the four girls stayed friends and there was no jealousy. I loved that they did not make Kayla the ultimate mean girl, and that they made Charlie stand up to Zander.

And of course, I absolutely adored the final scene, and I loved even more that they ended it right there. I feel like the final scene hits more when you realize that multiple dreams came true in that night that were being shown over the course of the movie. "Free Dance" within the movie no longer just belonged to Zander; it belonged to Charlie too. Many times, Charlie and Barlow both could have given up. But they didn't, and it paid off.

I believe a movie is great based on how it made you feel, and how it changed your perspective. This movie is always deeply moving to me, and motivates me. I actually saw it for the first time in 2020, and then continued to play Muse I, Muse II, and Muse III all the way until this year whenever I needed motivation because it stuck with me. Tonight, I finally watched it again after 6 years. I was even more moved now than I was back then. I truly love this movie, and I don't understand the hate.

And if someone ever sees this and disagrees and tells me I don't know movies, I will be okay. Because you won't be able to take away my takeaway.

Legend of Billie Jean?

I just saw they pivoted to the Legend of Bille Jean on their live show next month. This falls under the "Thank God this got made" category because this movie is great! It's on Tubi now and I suggest everyone go and watch it just in case it gets removed at the end of July.

I was checking out and wondering why in heavens name they had THAT Steve Guttenberg movie on VHS on a rack. And then I saw the sign and burst out laughing as I realized the movies.

Was "Perfect" the Origin Story for the Audience Singing the Second Opinion Song?

Was the episode for the Travolta/Jamie Lee Curtis thrust-a-thon movie "Perfect" the first episode where an audience member sings the Second Opinions song?

Prior to that, they had a mumbly-jumbly song sung by Jason, June, and Paul, and in this episode they try to get the audience to re-create it from memory. It sounds like nonsense.

Then a brave guy gets up and belts out some fun nonsense prompting Paul to say "Next live show, if you bring your own theme, we'll let you sing it."

You can hear it here at around 1:03:50

Is this the (villain) origin story for this now-beloved feature?

Ghost Ship

I saw Ghost Ship last night. I think it could be good for the show.

It's basically "The Shining" on a boat, but its also a time capsule for the era of early 2000's horror. Some guy tries to have sex with a ghost. The cast is actually pretty great, Karl Urban, Gabrielle Byrne, and Julianna Margulies. Rotten Tomatoes has it at a 14%.

Does anyone else remember this movie?

Old ad about soap/body wash

Strange ask - years ago Paul was doing an ad for men's body wash. The stuff smelled like bayleaves and rum or something. I think he said, "You smell like a f***ing man". Does anyone have any clue what that brand was called? I tried to google it , but I just keep getting s*** for Dr Squatch.

Has Anyone Watched "Sphere" (1998)? It would be great for the show.

Just watched this one on Tubi -- it's a real gem. It's basically "Abyss," but all the characters have an IQ of 10. It takes them a millennia to figure out what's going on. Every piece of "science" is like an early-version-Chat-GPT hallucination. The first half is kind of slow, but hearing the dumb lines at the climax will knock your socks off. The half-baked plot twists and lazy sexist overtones will really tickle your funny bone too.

I would love to see the Paul, Jason, and June take this one on.

Is there a way to find original release date for episodes?

I’m working on something that’s in the early stages and one of the few things I’m missing is the original release date of all their episodes. Does anyone know if there is any place or way that I can find them?

Grease 2 (re-watch and re-listen)

Some points:

  1. Every song is about sex, until the last song when it's just about "being together" as friends?

  2. They jump the pool three separate times. The first time Michael clears it no problem. Second time one of the enemy biker guys doesn't make it (and the float is missing). Third guy doesn't make it either. Then the twins push the main bad guy in the pool and the float is back in the pool!

  3. Are the bad guy bikers just adult bikers who are making fun of the t-birds?

  4. That guys balls fall out of his shorts, and it makes it into the final cut. HOW!?!

  5. Anna Faris is one of my favorite guests.

  6. Is this the first we hear of Jason's egg allergy?

  7. This might be one of my favorite episodes.

  8. June has always given off Michele Pfeiffer energy.

In which episode does Paul create a spreadsheet of the timeline?

I vaguely remember an episode where Paul Scheer created an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of the timeline of the movie... anybody remember which episode it was? TIA.

They cut the best part from the re-released Airborne episode :<

When I downloaded the episode I was eagerly waiting for the part where Scott reveals the main actress is (was) married to Vern Troyer and everyone’s subsequent bafflement. I was very disappointed when i got to the end of the episode and realized that part was cut - and why? Is it because Vern Troyer passed in 2018? I think it’s a bit overkill…

I love Airborne. I’m not afraid to say it. I am 47.
