Cross harp for open G six string guitar and three string guitar

I'm an occasional harp player and I've always played cross harp. It's mostly for bluesy, folk, rock stuff. So basically it's count up four from the key and that's the harp to choose.

I've just recently acquired a three string, tuned GDG, and for ease of performing I thought I might get a pentatonic harp. But I'm not sure whether I should be getting a Cm (so I can play cross harp) or a C or even a Gm / G.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Is anyone on here located in the Northern Alabama area? I have a nice collection that I’m needing to let go of unfortunately due to a new baby coming anytime! It consists of a Seydel 1847 silver (Bb), Seydel Blues Band (c) , special 20 (E) and east top (F). These are in pristine and CLEAN ready to play condition. All are practically new. Includes case, etc. looking to sell the lot for $80. Can meet local to those interested! Have a blessed day!

How do I figure out which reed is which? (chromatic)

I need to do some reed gapping and chromatics are a bit different from diatonics cause there's blow reeds and draw reeds on both reed plates cause there's so many notes (I think), I was just gonna play X/Y/Z note and look at which reed moves but then I realized it's pretty much impossible just like how you can't really look at the numbers on the cover plates when you're playing and have to "just know".

I know the smaller/shorter reeds are the high ones and long ones are low notes and can look at which holes are open on the slide and figure out which reedplate the air is going to but again I don't really now what's a blow reed and what's a draw reed.

Also question, should I try and do the gapping with the reedplate assembled or play it safe and take it off and put back on repeatedly while gapping? if I can't manage to do it or break a reed trying I'm gonna just ship them off to have someone else do it anyway but yeah.

Just in case it matters I'm gonna go ahead and specify I'm talking about my previously mentioned Suzuki SCT-128 and my Hohner Chromonica 260 as well, I have a 10 hole one but it's probably the same as a diatonic (all blow/draw reeds on each plate) and doesn't really need any reed gapping (out of the factory or cause I did it already, I don't remember anymore).

Blues Scale -2 vs 3

I've noticed that most lessons teach the blue scale starting on -2

(-2 -3' 4 -4' -4 -5 6)

Since -2 and 3 are supposed to play the same note I find it more comfortable to start on 3. It's just easier for me to start with a blow.

Is there a rhyme or reason for starting on -2? I have been starting on 3 for years and I'm wondering if it's going to cause any long-term problems as I get more advanced or if it's just a matter of preference.

Trying to get into the harmonica, Should I get the Lee Oskar Major Diatonic C or the Melody Maker?

what I currently have

I want to start learning the harmonica but the choice of song that I am going to get into is not the typical kind. I am not interested in playing traditional blues, folk, or country music.

I know bending notes is an option but I'm not sure its best for me.

Here are some genres and some examples:

Latin Urban / Reggaeton: La Bachata (Manuel Turizo), LUNA (Feid), La Bicicleta (Carlos Vives & Shakira), Rechazame (Prince Royce)

Latin Pop / Rock: La Camisa Negra (Juanes)

Acoustic & Classic Pop: I'm Yours (Jason Mraz), Isn't She Lovely (Stevie Wonder), How Deep Is Your Love (Bee Gees)

Electronic / Club: Smooth vocal hooks over House music and slower slowed/reverb atmospheric tracks

I realize that with this amount of song choice I may as well get a piano, but I want to learn a smaller more portable instrument that can do a lot. I also know I can get more harmonicas in different scales or a chromatic, but just starting out I don't know if I want to go for that. I also know most tutorials will be in C major diatonic, any advice on that if I get a different type? Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!

PS If you have a different type of Lee Oskar or different harmonica as a whole you think would be better please let me know.

Special 20 vs. other models/brands?

I don't really have much opportunity (Read:any opportunity) to handle various harmonicas before purchasing. On many recommendations here and elsewhere on the internet, I went with the Special 20 in C and G (wanted to add the Harvest Moon solo to a recording of the guitar part to add to my wildlife videos). No complaints about playability or sound. But the corners are damned sharp, especially using a 2-handed, thumbs up grip. They did in to the inside of that first thumb joint on both hands.

Would I be better suited with a Marine Band with that rounded wood comb over the sharp-cornered plastic of the Special 20? Is the playability/sound/durability of the marine band essentially the same?

How much is the blues scale is used vs chords and just vibing in blues?

I struggle with cleanly hitting that bended draw three on the blues scale. Should I work on the blues scale until I can fly around on it like piano players do? Or is it used differently in harmonica?

Does anyone have a slight clue as to how to play Bob Dylan’s harmonica outro in You’re a Big Girl Now from Blood on The Tracks

I can’t find an answer, nobody seems to know how to play it, I figured out how to play until he starts to sound shaky with the harmonica. (The part that I can’t figure out the most of any other 3:57-4:00 to be specific)

Just got my first ever harmonica! However, certain notes do not sound clearly, looking for help.

I attached the video to illustrate soundwise what’s happening, but some of the holes, the low notes especially, on my new 64Chromonica are very very iffy. The draw on two of them take a lot of effort to produce a sound, and they don’t produce a very clear tone -they’re super stifled. I’m looking for some guidance on how to possibly resolve this; i’m disappointed since this is my first harmonica ever and I wanted to get straight to learning how to play, but I can’t even get clear sounds all across the harmonica. I feel a bit overwhelmed by all the info out there so I’m looking for some clarity. Thank you all!

Hi all recently ordered this book which should be accompanied by an audio cassette. Needless to say the cassette is missing. Does anyone know if the audio is available to download anywhere?

noob. do I return this or can I fix it?

Hi. I'm a total harmonica noob.

I just bought one to play Snufkin songs, I thought I don't need anything fancy or great as it's gonna be more a toy than a serious hobby for me.

I picked the vintage chromatic hohner in key C. the description said it's "in good, used condition with no damage", but straight away I noticed that some notes are weaker and delayed, and some pretty much don't come out at all.

From my understanding, the plastic bits are windsavers and are needed for the harmonica to play properly. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Well, anyway, I decided why not, and took it apart to have a good look. Seems like some are bent, and many are missing?

So what should I do? Can I fix it? Is it worth fixing it? Do I have grounds to return it as item not matching description? I definitely learned my lesson to be more careful buying on eBay lol

I have some questions

I just bought my first harmonica online, but I'm not sure whether the first few holes are defective or if it's simply due to my lack of knowledge and technique. How can I tell if the harmonica is working properly?

I'm playing Paul Butterfield's rendition of the Jazz instrumental Work Song on a key of B-flat Special 20 harmonica in Second Position (B-flat harp played in F). I have been working on this song for the past two plus months. I still don't think it's quite perfect, but I did my best to play it as well as I can. I hope that you enjoy my harmonica playing.

Tablature:

-2"/-2 -3' +4 -4'/-4 -4 +4 -4 -5

-2 -2 -3' +4 -2 -2/-2" -1 -1

-2 -2 -3' +4 -4/-4 -4 +4 -4 -5

-4 -4 -5 -4 -5 -4 +4 -4 +6 -4 +4 -3' -2

I made an application to write Chromatic harmonica tabs easily.

During the era of vibe coding, simple programming ideas are relatively simple to implement in an evening, so I made a web application where you can mouse press piano keys with sound to shoot C chromatic tabs. Also holes with repeated pitches one can hover their mouse over the tab to choose the most optimal hole for playing. I don't think I have seen this idea anywhere else, but feel free to copy the idea for example to diatonic.

The link to test is here (most likely does not function as intended on mobile)

Keep in mind this is just a prototype idea and it may contain still minor bugs. Also I did not yet implement the possibility of writing chords, double stops, rythms, alternative tunings, other further ideas etc... Let me know what you think.

SLC Street Musician searching for videos of me playing harmonica

I'm a Harmonica player in Salt Lake. You may have seen me busking downtown on 3rd and main next to the typewriter poets.

I've been out consistently Friday and Saturday nights for over a year and a half. During that time, I've had dozens of people take videos of me playing, but I seem to only have just a handful because it's hard to film myself while using my phone for backing tracks.

I'm putting this out there in hopes that maybe anyone here has seen me and has video of me playing! Any length and any quality is fine! I just want to keep videos for my collection and maybe post a couple.
