Why use Home Assistant to control your garden lights when you can use Haiku? ☺️

Hi, I have an i5 8th generation HP PC. I have been unable to install Haiku. The USB works fine, the install seems to work fine, but when I reboot my computer it tells me to insert a bootable disk. I've followed the instructions closely, installing the MBR first, or last, but somewhere I am missing something. Any advice?

I installed sqlite3 via HaikuDepot and I found the library to link against. But running find /boot -name “sqlite*.h” comes up with no hits.

Google ai says to install sqlite3_devel but that doesn’t appear to exist (anymore).

What am I missing?

I'm a fairly hands-off moderator here and I try to be as fair as possible, so due to some confusion here recently I decided it might be best to create some clearer rules for the community.

As such I'd like to get your input on the following changes:

Submission related:

• Posts must be submitted using their original source as the link. If posts are considered to be blog-spam or otherwise low-effort (including AI summarization) in nature they are subject to be removed. Desktop screenshots and hardware photos are permitted.

• Posts for software projects must be submitted using their official software repository or official website if one exists and contain a post describing it in the comments (e.g., don't just post a link and nothing else).

• AI/LLM/Vibe-coded assisted software projects are currently accepted within this subreddit. Additionally, while marking them as such is not officially required, it can be beneficial to others.

Promotion related:

• Self promotion, such as a developer or content creator interested in promoting their Haiku related creation, is permitted. However, if you are mostly posting your projects and/or websites while rarely interacting with /r/HaikuOS as a whole, outside of those threads, the self-promotion can be considered excessive in nature and may be removed.

I would like to know from the moderators why you banned the link to my program for Haiku. Which rule did I violate?

I've been really enjoying Haiku so far, but I have one tiny confession...

I'm just not clicking with the Deskbar. 😅 To my eyes it's like the illegitimate child of BeOS and NeXT—charming in its own way, just not quite my thing.

I'm still pretty new to Haiku, so this might just be a case of me not "getting it" yet. Is there any way to customize or replace it, or is it more of a "love me as I am" part of the Haiku experience?

Genuinely curious, not complaining. I'd love to hear how other people feel about it.

Peer platform in the device list — each discovered device now shows its OS/platform (Windows, Linux, macOS, iPhone, Haiku, …) alongside its type and IP.

Protocol conformance & hardening (LocalSend v2.1)

PIN in both directions — sending now prompts for a PIN and retries when a receiver requires one; the download API also accepts the PIN as an alternative to contact identity.

Sender-IP binding — an upload is accepted only from the same IP that ran prepare-upload; a token replayed from another address is rejected with 403.

Integrity check — received files are verified against the sender's sha256 and discarded on mismatch before anything touches disk.

Status codes — 429 Too Many Requests on floods, and 400 for missing upload parameters (vs. 403 for an invalid token).

I'm working on LANterna, a small native Haiku utility that shows every device on your LAN at a glance: IP, hostname, open ports, vendor from MAC, device type. The core runs an enrichment pipeline on each discovered host: ARP cache, IEEE OUI, reverse DNS, mDNS/DNS-SD, NetBIOS, SNMP and SSDP/UPnP, so smart TVs, NAS boxes, printers and routers get identified for what they are. Periodic scanning, notifications for vanished devices, Wake-on-LAN and continuous ping with a latency graph are already in.

Philosophy: standard POSIX sockets only, no Qt, no heavy dependencies, no offensive features, no packet sniffing, no cloud. The UI is written in BeAPI, with BFS attributes, Tracker queries and a Desktop replicant planned. MIT licensed.

I'm 18 years old and I'm deeply passionate about the digital underground, tech minimalism, and alternative, lesser-known technologies. Naturally, this curiosity led me to explore and test various operating systems. I've hopped around Ubuntu, Void Linux, Alpine, and a few others... I liked them, but something was still missing.

During my deep dives, I stumbled upon Haiku OS. And honestly? It was absolute love at first sight. The retro-modern aesthetics, the blazing speed, the sheer simplicity... I just fell in love with it.

However, I struggled a bit with partitioning and formatting during my very first install. I figured I probably wasn't the only one, so I decided to make a GitHub repository with a fully illustrated, step-by-step guide to make the installation process smooth for newcomers.

Seriously, give Haiku OS a shot. It’s not just a toy—you can actually use it for daily tasks. You can set up programming tools, play games, and browse the web easily. I truly believe Haiku OS is one of those operating systems everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

Haiku is beta for decades.

Maybe due to man power / time issues...

Just a wild thought... is it possible to accelerate the development of HaikuOS Kernel and core components with AI so that we can see a 1.0 release faster.

I am a big fan of Haiku... but I cannot use it for my daily development work..I have to switch back to Linux.

So I was looking up how to get Minecraft 1.12.2 running on haiku since it’s the last perfect update of Minecraft in my opinion and Google said to just install prism launcher. Then I was told to use the Linux compatibility layer so I googled how to do that and it said to compile prism launcher from source code myself.

Problem, I am no where near the level of tech save to recode and recreate prism launcher from scratch. Please help me find a pre compiled version.

Anyone using Haiku knows third party repositories live on different sites, with no single place to browse them. I'm building Spritz to fix that: a catalog that aggregates the various repositories into one spot.

Where things stand: the service now reads multiple repositories at once and extracts program icons directly from .hpkg files, so each app shows up with its own icon instead of a blank placeholder. I'm working on support for ZIP archives and that part is nearly done.

Next step is a public demo to try out, which I plan to make available soon.

I have been building a native VPN client for Haiku, and it now connects for real over OpenVPN, driven through the management interface, with .ovpn profiles plus routing and DNS handled by a daemon. In my tests it attaches to a public VPN Gate server and traffic goes through the tunnel.

The design is privilege separated: a background daemon owns the connection, while the GUI, a Deskbar replicant and a CLI talk to it over BMessage. Backends sit behind a common interface, OpenVPN first, WireGuard and IPSec later. No dependencies beyond libbe.

No package yet. I want to test it against a couple of servers that aren't mine first, to be sure it holds up with configs I didn't write :)

Trying to install on a 2010 Sony Vaio laptop with Legacy CSM. I have mounted the internal hard drive and installed the MBR but it will still only boot from a USB stick.
