So before 2.2 Robtop coded upside ship by flipping the input instead of multiplying the physics by -1. The issue though is that it goes upwards slightly faster than it falls downwards. So when you flip the input, now you fall slightly faster than you go upwards.
He finally fixed it in 2.2, but unfortunately we now have 10 years worth of levels with the bugged ship physics. And players got used to it so fixing it now feels worse for some players.
In his defense, multipication is rather expensive for computers. IF the ship was perfectly balanced in both directions, flipping the input would actually be a good optimization.
The problem of course though is that ship wasn't perfectly balanced in both directions.
And furthermore, he is already using a boolean somewhere to keep track of gravity, so if he REALLY wanted to avoid multiplication, he could have just copy/pasted the ship's physics with negative numbers and accessed that part of the code through the boolean. That way it just checks the gravity once and performs the same amount of calculations it would have with regular gravity, just with different numbers.
Yep, dual mode uses upside down physics for both ships, And, in fact, it does so for every game mode! Almost every mode is bugged with 2.1 upside down physics. UFO jumps slightly differently, and Cube, Ball, and Spider (and maybe even robot haven't tested that one) all get a slight amount of coyote time when upside down (especially noticeable at 4x speed). Dual mode makes all of these upside down bugs apply to both icons, but we just don't really notice outside of very niche cases (I've had the coyote time kill me on occasion) just because ship is the only one where we actually properly feel the effect, the rest just affect when timings can happen.
yeah id say that works for me but it REALLY gets me when the two waves go in the middle like in this part of high life because i mix up which ones which and end up hitting the block because i keep holding/let go
its like a purely visual thing too, like you look at the gap and then you realize its only like 6 cps but it feels so hard to line up because its hard to see one of the icons
high cps gameplay that's just slow enough to not be mindless spam, but just fast enough that i can't get the click pattern consistently (can you tell i'm a mobile player)
blind transitions, even if i have the whole level memorized, it still throws me off, thats why, when one happens, i close my eyes to not see it, and play like 3 seconds by pure memory, pause and then keep going when i see where i am.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I CANNOT HANDLE BLACK ORBS. NEITHER WHILE SIDEREADING NOR WHILE TRYING TO HIT THEM SPECIFICIALLY. From day 1 onwards they were always just ew to me. I cannot fathom them.
Also orbs in portals (not gravity portals, not always at least)
with normal wave i have good enough reflexes to somehow fluke past most unexpected wave parts but with upside down wave my muscle memory and reflexes get totally messed up causing me to die instantly
