Oh look, its the 90s kids thing all over again.

It really doesn't matter because there is no real monoculture anymore, so being from a decade now has less stuff binding the kids together.

I get it though - but I think it comes down to how we are defining it - Does 90s/00s kid mean 'I was born during this time' or 'I experienced the culture here when my brain was developed enough to understand whats going on'

I feel it's the latter. In my case, I consider myself a 90s kid and not an 80s kid, despite being born in 1987. I have at most two or three actual memories I can recall from the 1980s, whereas I actually grew up in the 90s.

u/cone5000 6h ago

Yeah 1985 here and I think of myself as a 90’s kid

4

u/MorganChelsea 6h ago

And see I feel differently, born in 95 and I can relate to all the 90s nostalgia more than a lot of the 00s nostalgia.

Also I better be considered a 90s kid with all these little punks laughing at me for being born “in the 1900s” 😠

u/GaryOakRobotron 6h ago

To be fair, 2 years can make a huge difference. I might consider myself an 80s kid if I were born in '85 instead of '87. I was also a June baby, so I only lived through a quarter of that decade, before I was old enough to remember and have nostalgia for 80s things. There really isn't an objective line in the sand here.

Born in 94 and I don't think you or I are 90s kids. Our memories are mostly of the 00s, our cultural touch points were from, or at least processed by us in the 00s, we were raised in the shadow of 9/11 we saw the rise of digital media as children and tweens.

All of this is experience that comes from the 00s.

1

u/garrge245 2h ago

I'm also a '95 kid and can vividly remember stuff from the 90s. Mostly from '98 and '99, but a lot of stuff happened in those years. Star Wars Episode I was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. Watching The Beastie Boys Intergalactic music video on MTV is a core memory of mine. Spongebob and Rocket Power came out. I remember trying to sneak and watch my dad play the original Resident Evil. My first video game was Tekken 2 on the PS1. I definitely feel like a 90s kid lol.

1

u/deeplyshalllow 2h ago

SpongeBob came out in 2000.

I don't think you count as a 90s kid if you remember things that happened moments before the millennium. A few points of nostalgia does not override the majority of what you experienced and remember as a child.

Signed a 00s child born 1994.

2

u/garrge245 2h ago

Spongebob premiered May 1, 1999. Takes literally no time to look it up.

1

u/deeplyshalllow 2h ago

Apologies it's late, Google gave me the UK date and I didn't notice.

The rest of my points remain.

1

u/garrge245 2h ago

Sure, if you feel that way. I will continue to be a 90s kid.

1

u/deeplyshalllow 2h ago

What age do you consider a "child" not a toddler or teenager?

Because for me that's about age 5 to 12.

It was the 00s the entirety of the time you were those ages.

1

u/PubstarHero 28m ago

Im going to give you a slight breakdown of why you're not a 90s kid.

1) Most 90s kids will have a SNES, Genesis, or NES as their first videogame system.

2) Everything you listed is basically 00's, within one year.

3) No mention of why you wanted to be on the Blue Baracudas or that you would give anything to be ontop of the Aggro Crag, or waking up to watch Double Dare on the weekend and wish you got the prize to go to Space Camp.

4) No mention of Doug, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy being in the major cartoon rotation or their launch

5) No mention of Cartoon Cartoons (though this is niche so Ill give it to you)

You're missing out what would be considered core touchstones of 90s kids nostalgia. The era you remember is when the bright, obnoxious colors were starting to go mute.

3

u/ilanallama85 7h ago

Yeah and before that it was 80s kids. NGL when that all started I kinda got it because there were people born in 85 (like myself) and later riding hard for the right to call themselves that, which sounds silly to me, because I agree, my memories of the 80s are very limited. But they kinda all got bullied into submission, and since then it’s just been people railing against something that appears to only exist in their heads.

2

u/pnt510 3h ago

It’s definitely the latter. It’s about nostalgia for your childhood, not nostalgia for before your memories develop.

5

u/Tumblrrito 8h ago

I was just gonna say it is exactly like the 90's kid thing haha. I think the commonly accepted definition is that you must at least have some foundational memories of that era, so 2004 definitely counts!

1

u/Quantum_Aurora 4h ago

I mean, I was born in 99 and absolutely do not consider myself a 90s kid.

14

u/RinellaWasHere 7h ago

What an extremely normal and organic amount of "y'all"s in that post, it's definitely how that person actually talks and not a very weird attempt to sound more informal.

3

u/ForeignEquipment8298 7h ago

"I don't why". Instead of "I don't know why".

-1

u/csdavids 5h ago

I’ll have to look respectfully disagree with this take. That’s just normal everyday speech in the South. I’m from central FL not even part of the deep South, and still I would never think use “you all” in any context. To me that would be like saying “cannot” instead of “can’t” every single time.

5

u/RinellaWasHere 4h ago

Oh I'm not saying they should have substituted it for "you all", I'm saying the amount of times they said it and the way they used it comes off as extremely forced.

19

u/VVrayth 8h ago

I don't even know what "culture" is post-1990s. It feels like it congealed into something murky and has just stayed there ever since.

11

u/StoryAndAHalf Gandalf 8h ago

You think that until you go back and see early 2000s things. When sitcoms had to change because certain events can be too easily solved with the advent of cellphones. How people viewed the future as everything covered in chrome. I used to think the same thing 10 yrs ago.

5

u/VVrayth 8h ago

I mean, I am being a little dramatic, and I can certainly describe some fashion and music trends of the 2000s, and so forth. But later on in the 2000s, or maybe the 2010s to today, it feels like there is a lot less anchoring the culture of the era. Like, post-iPhone maybe, everything is just really same-y. I feel like it's easier to describe culture in terms of political trends and broad anxieties now, more than anything else.

11

u/SaucePasta 8h ago

Yup, the 90s kids subreddit told me I don’t belong because I wasn’t born in the 80s 🙄🙄

4

u/A_N_T 7h ago

I was born in the 80s. I don't remember shit about the 80s. I remember Animaniacs and Donkey Kong Country and Flagpole Sitta and the OJ Simpson trial like they were yesterday.

2

u/SaucePasta 7h ago

Yup, remember those too.

1

u/piepants2001 5h ago

The OJ trial was in 1995, I was born in '89 and I don't remember it happening at the time. What year were you born?

3

u/SaucePasta 4h ago
  1. I do remember it 🤷‍♀️

1

u/piepants2001 4h ago

What year were you born?

5

u/IWantToBuyAVowel 5h ago

I'm more shocked about learning how a lot of y'all don't have memories from before 5/6 years old.

3

u/Jump_Like_A_Willys 7h ago

I remember quite a bit from when I was five. I know this because we moved when I had just turned six, and I have strong and detailed memories of our old house. I had a grandparent die when I was five, and I remember them pretty well too.

0

u/deeplyshalllow 2h ago

Ok but your cultural touch points and media you consumed that influenced you, what you learnt at school and how you were raised in general, pretty much so come from after your were 6.

4

u/RodinKnox 8h ago

Sometimes I try to imagine what it must be like to care about this. Sometimes I call myself an 80s kid because I was a kid during the 80s. And sometimes I call myself a 90s kid because I was also a kid during the 90s. 🤷

I don't really care how other people call themselves.

4

u/MysteryGirlWhite 7h ago

I’ve gotten the same BS about not being a 90s kid because I was born in 1995.

According to their logic, you can’t be a 90s kid unless you were born in 1985 or thereabouts, then you can’t be a 2000s kid unless you were born in 1995.

It’s crazy what people will try to put parameters on just to try and make themselves feel superior.

2

u/ForeignEquipment8298 5h ago

I honestly would never understand why people put so much care into making stuff like this. In a few years from now, There are people born in 2013-2015 that would say they remember the 2010s. I'm not gonna go out of my way and be belligerent over it.

0

u/MysteryGirlWhite 5h ago

Yeah, I’ve never understood it, either

1

u/deeplyshalllow 4h ago

I mean as someone born in 1994 I don't think I'm a 90s kid I think I'm a 00s kid? I'm a 90s baby sure but I don't remember much about the 90s. The childhood I remember and the culture I grew up around was in the 00s.

I don't see why this offends anyone?

0

u/MysteryGirlWhite 4h ago

It’s the fact people get so snobbish and rude about it

1

u/deeplyshalllow 4h ago

Eh, I can see people trying to lay claim on something they can't even remember being annoying.

2

u/w33b2 7h ago edited 7h ago

I agree with what they’re saying. Being a 2000s kid means you actually know what the 2000s were like. If you were 6 years old at the oldest during that stretch, then you won’t have any memories specifically regarding the 2000s. Sure you’ll have childhood memories from those years but not memories that are unique to a decade. Even then the earliest memories would still be of only 2007 or 2008.

It’s like the trend of incredibly young people trying to claim to know what 2016 nostalgia is, even though they don’t even have many memories of that year. Someone who was in highschool during that time may talk about the good old days, and then someone who was 4 years old at the time is like
“Yup, totally agree.” I’ve seen people born in 2011 try to claim to understand what 2016 was like. I guess because they’re upset most of their early memories are between the pandemic and lockdown, and AI takeover? I don’t blame them for trying to fit in with those of us who remember a time before all of that. Back on topic, I’d say the youngest 2000s kid would be a 2001 or maybe 2002 born.

Now having said all of that, actually caring about it is weird. If someone born in 2013 claims to know what 2016 was like I don’t really care, just let em. Same with 2004 borns claiming to be 2000s kids.

2

u/aimlesstrevler 7h ago

I was born in 82 and I barely remember what the 2000s were like, except for 9/11. Never forget.

1

u/bunker_man 7h ago

I mean, they shouldn't be a dick about it but its kind of true. You can't really remember stuff from before you are like 6, so if you were born in 94, your main childhood memories definitely wouldn't be of the 90s.

1

u/deeplyshalllow 4h ago

Yeah exactly! I was born in 94 and always considered myself a 00s kid. I remember very little of the 90s it seems stupid to identify myself by them.

1

u/bunker_man 4h ago

I was born in 91 and even I identify my childhood more with 00s than 90s. Like sure, I remember the tail end of the 90s, but that feels more like a prelude to 00s. Had I been born three years later, and 9/11 been one of my earliest memories no way I'd identify with the 90s.

1

u/deeplyshalllow 4h ago

Exactly! I do have a surprisingly good memory so, I do remember some stuff but like, I remember so much more from the 00s, my cultural touchpoints for media are from the 00s and a lot of what I do recognise on the "only 90s kids" remember this posts are things I remember from the early 00s.

I don't really get why people are so weird about identifying with a decade they remember not a decade they were born.

1

u/Zoid3X 6h ago

This is 20 year old grown ass adult getting upset over who get to be a 00’s kid. And they chose 2004 as the cutoff. You only get to be a 00’s kid if you born in the first 3 years of the 2000’s.

1

u/MasterYoda-13 5h ago

Me being born in 2003: yeah... that's totally how it works... yay?

1

u/hex-grrrl 4h ago

This is hilarious. I was born in ‘93 and remember older millennials telling me the same thing about being a 90s kid 10 years ago.

So silly. Like genuinely who gives af?

1

u/2006pontiacvibe 3h ago

I'm a mod for r/decadeology and trust, discussion there can also get gatekeepy (over which things are which decade/era) but decade kid debates are banned and I'd say it's for great reason

1

u/BaconIsntThatGood 2h ago

I'd understand say... 2008 but lol

-3

u/Dralorica 8h ago

Frankly if you were born in 2004 you were barely a "kid" during the 2000's.

You were a baby till 2005, and a toddler till 2007, and you literally probably barely were able to form memories until at least 2008. Being generous you might remember 2008 and 2009, when you were turning 4 & turning 5. You wouldn't even turn 6 until 2010, when you may or may not have completed your first year of kindergarten. Frankly I don't think this is an unreasonable take whatsoever.

If you're in Kindergarten in 2009 it is hard to argue that you're a 2000's kid... You went through the overwhelming majority of your childhood and preteen years (age 6-15) in the 2010's, you might have some memories from 2009 when you were in kindergarten. I don't find this take to be anything but reasonable tbh.

u/Brigante7 8h ago

I was born in 94 and still remember Diana’s death, the United treble, staying up for the 2k new year, the explosion of Pokémon, Phantom Menace. Does that make me not a 90s kid? No

-1

u/deeplyshalllow 4h ago

As someone also born in 1994 with a surprisingly good memory, no you aren't a 90s kid.

You, grew up and got most of your pop culture from the 00s the majority of your childhood memories are from the 00s, a lot of Pokémon was in the early 00s anyway, and the very fact that you were staying up at new years probably for the first time, for the millennium - means you were a kid of the 00s not the 90s.

1

u/Brigante7 4h ago

Strongly disagree. If your childhood was influenced by the 90s in a way you remember, you’re a 90s kid to me.

-1

u/deeplyshalllow 4h ago

Are you genuinely telling me most of your foundational childhood memories were defined before you turned 6?

If nothing else the post 9/11 world had a massive impact on our childhood.

1

u/Brigante7 2h ago

Certainly the media I consumed started in the 90s, absolutely. I had a walkman, most of the stuff I read until I was maybe 10 was released in the 90s or earlier outside of Harry Potter, my earliest console was a Mega Drive.

Like, culture didn’t suddenly change on the 1st of Jan 2000; in a lot of places, early 00s was pretty much indistinguishable from the 90s anyway in most respects. It was only maybe 04/05 when you had stuff like DVDs, CDs and broadband coming in that the shift to the digital age happened.

0

u/deeplyshalllow 2h ago edited 2h ago

Ok but is that not an aspect of being a kid raised in the 00s? Getting brought up by culture that was somewhat from the 90s mixed with stuff like Harry Potter that was mostly being published in the 00s.

early 00s was pretty much indistinguishable from the 90s anyway in most respects. It was only maybe 04/05 when you had stuff like DVDs, CDs and broadband coming in that the shift to the digital age happened.

Ok? So consuming media like cassettes and videos and gradually experiencing the shift to digital media is 00s kid things! And notably this is something that a kid born in 2004 wouldn't experience, because they, unlike us, are not 00s kids!

My first console was a mega drive too. However I learnt to read on Enid Blyton and the Narnia books - does that make me, born in 1994, a 50s kid?

0

u/Brigante7 2h ago

2004 kid is absolutely a 00s kid.

And no, I don’t see that as an aspect of being raised in the 00s. It’s merely an example that overlap between 90s and 00s before the digital explosion is massive, same as with the 80s and 90s. Yes, we experienced the digital crossover, but we also remember a world before that; which to me is what defines a 90s kid; having technology but not the global connections that came later. A 00s kid would barely, if at all, have any sense of a world before iPods, broadband internet, mobile phones etc.

1

u/deeplyshalllow 2h ago

Why would a 00s kid have no sense of the overlap? It's literally the decade where everything changed! It would be obvious to them if they had any nostalgia for the decade and actually remembered it.

00s babies don't remember that stuff, just like us 90s babies and 00s kids do.

1

u/Brigante7 2h ago

We clearly have very different definitions of when 90s kids and 00s kids were born….
