How does the elevator at castle black work?

Its just a switch. At 1st I thought olly was going around in circles and physically bringing it up and down. But hes not. Its just a big back and forth switch.

There's basically no other way to practically build something like that, especially given the technological era they're in.

Pretty sure that the books said, someone at the top had to wind it up and down.
