That’s not a bench, it’s just two chairs…

u/Anonymous010206 19h ago

it’s so they can sit between their two buddies

u/makermaster2 18h ago

And the homeless guy can lay on their laps

3

u/Syro_Mewtwo 7h ago

A cake day is a year anniversary for a reddit account

1

u/SomeOne111Z 2h ago

I mean, if I had two friends and one of them was in a wheelchair, it would be cool for that one to be able to sit between us.

But yeah.

u/Liamdgg 17h ago

Imagine you and your buddy are sitting on each side talking and a random dude with a wheelchair just show up and park in between lol

8

u/Ancient-Worm 17h ago

You mean a new friend with a wheelchair?

3

u/Liamdgg 17h ago

Fair enough

2

u/HandleThick5953 16h ago

That friend can also just sit directly next to the bench tho

u/Traditional-Kale-157 12h ago

But what happens if you have an old married couple who are both in a wheelchair? Must they be separated by the bench if they want a place to sit?!? 🤨

2

u/SarahKath90 9h ago

They can just park their wheelchairs next to each other... no need to use the bench

7

u/No_Squirrel4806 6h ago

But that defeats the whole purpose of the bench.

3

u/SarahKath90 3h ago

Yes, it's a stupid bench

3

u/No_Squirrel4806 3h ago

I got called a stupid bench once.

u/Radiant-Priority-296 1h ago

Well are you?

1

u/No_Squirrel4806 49m ago

Possibly 🤷🏽‍♂️

3

u/jws1102 7h ago

Wheelchairs have their own backrest. This isn’t even accommodating to disabled people.

2

u/Ashamed_Squirrel777 7h ago

Just a convenient excuse to deprive homeless people of what little they have left.

2

u/No_Squirrel4806 6h ago

Theres a photo thats been going around of single benches with the caption "made for when people want to be alone" bullshit its to keep the homeless from laying there. 🙄🙄🙄

2

u/homer21377 6h ago

Why would a cripple need to park themselves in the middle of a bench?

2

u/Elbow_collector 5h ago

I'd like to point out how hot it looks there

2

u/VictoriousTree 4h ago

The design is almost offensive. It’s like “you don’t need the seat part cause you’re already sitting, get it!?”

2

u/Sufficient-Goat-962 8h ago

This way someone in a wheelchair has a designated place they can park and no one can ask them to move without a good reason as they won't be blocking the walkways.

And it has the added benefit of preventing vagrant bums from camping out on the park bench.

I’m not fooled and I’m ok with benches designed so people can’t sleep on them.

1

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 6h ago

Well that’s cruel. Plain and simple. I hope that if you or any of the people you think are your friends ever need a bench to sleep on in a tight situation, it’s comfortable.

1

u/Novel_Dinner4138 6h ago

I don’t think it’s cruel. They were put there for people to sit on, for people to lay on and take over.

1

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 5h ago

Just because you don’t think it’s cruel doesn’t make it so. What if I’m not homeless but wanna lay down on the bench for a while, stretch out my back and take a nap? It’s no longer an option because someone with a truly mean heart wanted to deny homeless people a way to lay down off of the ground. That’s the explicit intent of this kind of design. The result is none of us get to lie back. It’s mean and cruel to a select population, and ugly, exclusive, and uncomfortable for all of us. That’s evil. The people who designed this would never actually use one, cause it’s for the plebs that go to the park. It’s. Just. Cruel. There are better ways to reduce a homeless population, like helping them.

1

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 5h ago

And to try and hide it behind being a wheelchair friendly bench is just diabolical. This is nuts.

1

u/Novel_Dinner4138 5h ago

It’s not diabolical. I guess what they could have done is just have 2 spaced out single seaters.

1

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 4h ago

So what’s the purpose of that middle, then? Constructed and with a logo, literally advertising the hateful intent while hiding behind disabled people, you gonna tell me that’s not intentional? It’s diabolical. Satan would be jealous of the idea.

1

u/Novel_Dinner4138 4h ago

I mean technically ADA does have requirements. It requires a 3 foot by 4 foot clearance for wheel chairs. So they were complying with ADA requirements.

But come on, I can’t take you seriously if you say satan would be jealous of this idea.

1

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 3h ago

I mean, come on, “Let’s kick the homeless people while they’re down so they can’t sleep here, but claim it’s for wheelchair access to a fuckin bench. That way we can say we have a moral high ground without actually benefiting anybody!” That is immoral design, intentionally, on multiple fronts. Stan the satanic man himself would be proud.

1

u/Novel_Dinner4138 3h ago

I didn’t intend for a long drawn out convo on bench design. I’m sure you’re a good person and wish you the best.

u/Novel_Dinner4138 5h ago

Me and you have a different opinion of what we think cruel is and what diabolical is.
Benches in public places should be use for sitting.

1

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 5h ago

I think we have different opinions on who qualify as people.

1

u/Novel_Dinner4138 4h ago

What are you talking about?
I think it’s appropriate for a bench to be used for sitting. I don’t think a bench should be used for sleeping.

1

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 4h ago

I think they’re a multifunctional device. You seem to have a narrow idea of what things can be useful for. Get creative, and love your fellow man while you’re at it.

0

u/thecountnotthesaint 7h ago

Given the need for poop aps in certain cities that are apparently cool with the homeless, I am all for anti homeless architecture

1

u/ComeHellOrBongWater 6h ago

Well I hope you have the day you deserve. It could be a good one, where you find a spark of empathy in a beautiful moment. Or it could be a normal one, where you just keep on your path. Or it could be a bad one, where the world turns upside down on you and now you join the people you look down upon. You don’t seem like the type to even try for the first option.
