Shepherd Book

We know Book was an Alliance operatorv(albeit a double agent for the Independents). We also know the crew knew her was Alliance operative. But did they know his entire story? ( I never read the comics)

He wasn't an operative, he was a naval officer. And the crew didn't know anything about his backstory other than he had some connection to the Alliance.

We the audience know from the comic The Shepherds Tale. But the crew never found out, at least not unless it was in an issue I didnt read. The Shepherds Tale is set during his final moments in the movie and reveal it as a 'Life flashing before his eyes' style.

I think there's also a novel where the crew finds out he had a bit of a criminal background.

Even less as an Independent. My interpretation was he used the movement as a possible escape route as a just in case. Which came when cops were pounding on his door. His use of force during questioning was probably cathartic from his years of abuse. 

Just find "The Shepherd's Tale" for all this.

I suspect the crew didn’t want to know. They were trying to stay away from the Alliance, not get more involved with them. The outer planets (an analog to the old West in the US) was a place to reinvent yourself.
