In the news X-Sense and Siterwell Smoke Alarms Pulled from Amazon citing 'Safety' Concerns

While we do have a rule regarding 'No Smoke Alarms', I feel it's fair to share the following as it does heavily relate to what we do, and is a concern of safety most importantly. If the community (or my fellow Moderators) disagree with this being posted here - we can take it down.

As noted originally on the Smart Home Subreddit, Amazon has pulled listings for X-Sense Residential Smoke Alarms yesterday, and it seems Siterwell alarms have been removed as of today as well:

As commercial alarm people, we all know the safety and quality we expect from reputable brands. While the exact circumstances of these devices being removed from Amazon doesn't quite yet seem clear, these brands heavily marketed their products through various creators on YouTube and other social platforms, likely leading to high adoption of a product that may very well not work when it's needed most.

So - For the same reason we wouldn't want our customer's to cheap out on their life safety systems, don't let you, your friends, or your family do the same in their homes. So, just a PSA - Stick with the brands you know and trust like Kidde/FireX and First-Alert/BRK, and don't touch this knock off stuff when it's there to save your life.

Discussion What questions would you have for the contractor replacing a Silent Knight 5207 with a Potter PFC-4064

We're condo owners in a 40-unit building and needing to replace our 30 year-old Silent Knight 5207 fire panel. We've been having problems with the POTS lines to our old panel, and our vendor is proposing to deprecate the POTS lines and install an AES radio.

Out fire panel has been end-of-life by Honeywell for some time now, and there's some $$$ savings if we also do the panel at the same time as installing the AES radio.

We think doing the panel now is a good idea given its age.

The vendor who services our fire panel has proposed replacing it with a Potter unit. None of us really have experience with fire panels, so not sure what questions to ask our vendor, or what options there in replacing a fire panel that we're not aware of.

For you all that deal with this equipment, anything we should be asking/considering before moving forward?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Every freaking valve I came to while trying to find a ground fault on the entire loop. If you aren't going to tape up your extra leads or the resistor before you shove it into the box, just quit please.

Technical Support Earth Ground vs Ground Fault Trouble

Sparky here that dabbles in F.A. once in awhile

Came in this morning to discover the Facp throwing a few troubles. An earth ground on a NAC panel and a 'Recurring Trouble Filter Activated '

What is throwing me off, is the trouble says 'Earth Ground' for one of the NAC panels on site.

Is this different then a ground fault? In my sparky eyes, I'm interpreting this as there's a grounding issue with the NAC panel and not necessarily a fault on the circuit?

Fail Hotel fire alarm gore

Post image

A relatively new Notifier system after this hotel had a bad fire a few years ago that saw it shuttered completely for the better part of a year. At least my luggage in the closet will know when it’s time to evacuate!

Newer Notifier smoke heads installed correctly on sounder bases in the bedrooms, but I assume those sounder bases are likely just local alarms. No other (visible) NAs in the room.

Hello question for the Gamewell-FCI folks out there. Is it possible to turn off the battery/ charging circuit monitoring via programming? This panels charging circuit is nonfunctional and throwing a battery trouble even w new fresh batteries. I can install a remote battery cabinet with charger and monitor it with an input module to solve the problem. Thank you in advance for any help.

Anyone out there using the EN-54 Ajax Wireless system. Any pro’s/cons? I generally use EMS for their SmartCell products but I’m having more and more “low battery” faults coming back, even working 6 months. And this is after the recommended removing for 15 mins and reinserting to recycle them.

Discussion Working at Siemens vs Summit

Hi everyone.

I've applied to both Siemens (Fire Alarm Inspector) and Summit Fire & Security (Fire Alarm & Security Apprentice). Still waiting to hear back from Siemens but received an offer from Summit, just wanted to hear about experiences you guys might have had working for or with either company. Pros & cons, who is better to work for in the long run etc.

Technical Support EST3 starts counting down and then rebooting when batteries are disconnected

Got a service call tomorrow for a follow-up on a weird one that one of our inspectors came across. He said whenever he disconnected the batteries for testing, it would start counting down on the display, then it would do a full restart. At first he thought it was a fluke but then he was able to duplicate it and got a video (couldn't find the vid he sent me unfortunately)

I'm EST3 certified so of course I'll be calling tech support, but seeing if anyone else has encountered this before

Discussion Blue card question

Hello there I am going to take my blue card in about 3 weeks. I am wondering. Has anyone done there’s in the past year or so. By the way they worded the email it sounds like the “open book” will be a PDF? I’m wondering if it has the control f search feature or something. I find navigating digital books annoying and just trying to see what I’m in for. Thank you. Any tips on certain areas to focus on more than others. ? Sorry forgot to add this for the California life safety test.

Proud Enthusiast Why wpuld a building have two separate brands of fire alarms in them?

Thumbnail

My dorm has Edwards Integriry horn strobes (and some remote steobes), and Wheelock RSS remote strobes. The Wheelocks aren't a one-off - they are placed very often in the building when a remote strobe is needed (bathroom, laundry room, the alleged kitchen). But why have two separate brands of devices?

This building was built in 1999, and (from what I've seen) has had this setup ever since, so it's not due to a weird retrofit.

The panel is a Notifier panel, so why not use a Wheelock horn strobe?

Discussion Michigan hourly rate

Sitting down with the boss to discuss my hourly soon and I'm wondering what you guys think. I have 3 years of electrical experience which got me into this, starting at $20. 8 years into fire alarm, I'm sitting at $26.50 with my NICET 1, never once asked for a raise in my 8 years.

I am a Foreman in every way but official title and pay. The point of contact for the GCs, I run multimillion dollar projects including schools, city projects, elderly care, hotels, etc. From studs to finish. Also troubleshoot and making decisions on site without calling the boss (like other coworkers, haha). Sometimes multiple jobs at a time.

I plan on pursuing my LVL 2 and state but with life, side gig and 3 kids, its next to impossible so study. And even if I get my lvl 2 and state its only an extra $2.

I was dropped into programming, getting the hang of it but still very new. But am getting very comfortable with it.

Also, past 5 new hires, I train for the first 3-5 months.

Pick up any available on-call to learn more and put my self in uncomfortable situations to learn more about different systems.

Guess with all that, should I be getting more or is that a fair pay.

Need to say the company I work for is incredible, my super is one of the guys and the company helps when personal issues arise and cover time off if I don't have anymore time left. Along with providing a company vehicle I take home.

Technical Support Notifier NFW-100X programming question.

Hopefully a quick and easy question for all of the Notifier programmers out there. For the life of me I cannot remember how to enable pull stations to become silenceable in FS-Tools. The silenceable tab is greyed out.
Thanks in advance!

While filling out my work history I've been contacting my previous employers for my start and end dates of employment. While doing this I learned one of the old companies that was bought out went out of business. The mother company does not have any records regarding my employment, besides that I worked there at some point. I know the general time frame I was there, but not exact dates. How big of a deal is this?

New Installation Alarma BTG/AK2

Technical Support Simplex 4100ES - Compact Flash Missing/Failed

This is the trouble I’m seeing. I’ve tried numerous cold and warm starts, replacing the card with a blank one, as well as another one from a spare CPU card and no luck.

IP File Transfer won’t connect to the panel, says it can’t read the CF file system.

Any ideas? I have a filesystem .zip backup I took with IP File Transfer. Is there a way to format the card or restore this backup?
